Greg Marzhew discussion

Best and Marzhew obviously worked out a very strong combination on both sides of the ball last year, and given his historical problems with defence having him on the left edge that generally receives less defensive scrutiny is probably a smart idea.

In saying that, I wouldn't be relegating him to the reserve grader category based on performances this year. Even on Thursday with what has been deemed an 'off night' he saved our yardage sets at least half a dozen times with runs in traffic that very few people in the entire NRL could replicate.

Enari had another relatively strong performance but even on his best day doesn't really get close to what Greg offers in yardage. Saving the energy of our middles is rather invaluable due to their lacklustre defensive capabilities under fatigue.

Thoughts on what to do with Greg?

It's well-established that he is a confidence player, his errors (acknowledging a team-wide problem) and inability to defend kicks are killing us at the moment - but at the same time he still saves a yardage set 4-5 times per game at least, and every carry he takes is quality whereas pretty much everyone else is mixed.

We don't have anyone who can kick us out of trouble like many other sides so if we remove Greg from the equation I really struggle to see us with any opportunity to win a field position battle - you could mount an argument that his errors work to negate this. Gags yardage output is significantly down this year and has similar discipline issues, Schiller is keen but still working out how to be effective in yardage, Best is relatively consistent.

Teams attack him every week, there's no hiding from the above faults. Is there value in dropping him to Cup to run 300m/game while working out a plan to protect his kick defence? Or do we persevere, attempting to fix things on the fly in firsts?

I know we joke about him being moved to the middle but it might be his only chance to stay in the NRL. 20 mins off the bench every week like Havili from the Rabbitohs. I don’t know how his defence going to hold up though.

Moving him to the middle isn't going to fix his dropsies issue up. He needs to go back to cup and try and work on it.

Been a big supporter of his but it's time to go back to Cup if Schiller is good to go. Let McCarthy have a run in FG.

Fletch Hunt can teach Marz how to be a baller of a footy player. Damn I love that kid.

I dont think he Can be dropped, his carries are even more crucial now given the players we have missing in the middle. Teams are kicking to him to ensure his not having an effective carry out our own end, this is where ponga needs to be working with him so he can hand off to him to return the ball some of the time, he also needs better kick protection from best, i know its a fine line between blocking and giving away the penalty but he has to do better than what he has been.
The drop balls and loose carries will sort themself out, his gone through stages like this throughout his whole career, he will come good.

Absolutely can, the dropped balls are doing more harm than what ever runs he is doing before the drops the ball.

Teams now know his weakness & will continue to expose him . They kick to him because he can't catch . His errors are proving far to costly
