Fletcher Sharpe discussion

Tell you what I’m sick of seeing though? The idiots of social media saying he’s a nothing player and he needs to step aside and let Ponga run the show in the halves! Like one guy today suggested he is a pointless pick and shouldn’t even be in the side! 🥴

You just want to shake some sense into them but something tells me their parents already tried that when quite young.
Your average Facebook or Twitter user is a zero attention span overgrown child who only watches highlights.

Last year he was a player who had great highlights so I'm sure those people thought he was going a lot better.

This year he's had to play on with an injury restricting his ability to do highlight reel plays so he's had to play a role within the system more, so how effective he's been has hinged on his ability to do what a lot of us myself included doubted his ability at: to effectively play a half's role in shape. His rate of improvement on that front has been really pleasing and a more mature person who watches the whole game would factor that into their assessment of him going forward.

Moreover Kalyn's form since he's come back has demonstrated he's an out-and-out fullback! The more he's brought onto the ball two or three passes wide with his inside men squaring up the defensive line, the more dangerous he looks!

With KP locked in for the foreseeable future. And Fletcher’s performance in the centres it creates a good conundrum on where is his best position in the team?

We only have seen one game of Sandon at hooker, but obviously his best position is in the halves. Harrison Graham plays better at hooker.

I’m guessing Hollbrook will run with the same team next week. When Best is back Sandon back to the bench.

Next year is interesting, will Sharpe replace Gags? There is no doubt he is a superstar. He could walk into any club and be the starting FB. And now making a name for himself as a 5/8. For him he would demand more money as FB or 5/8. But for the make up of this side next year centre may be his best position.

He’s to good to be a utility.

Thoughts?

Holbrook said Sharpe might not play centre next week, with more time to prepare. He’s probably likely to play fullback with Ponga most likely not backing up, I’d say.

Personally have always loved the idea of Sharpe at five eighth. Gets his hands on the ball most there, is more than capable of creating chances, has a good kicking game developing, and his running game is just as dangerous. Definitely his best spot for us, imo.

Honestly I have seen enough of sharpe at 6 we should persist and go all chips in.

We can't expect him to be a finished product at 11 rounds with a PCL injury since round 1. But what we have seen from him is great toughness and defence. Honestly think him and brown are already the best defensive halves in the comp. Extremely impressive after 11 rounds and defense is half of the game.

Attack wise, his running threat and strength in the hips is so similar munster, who took time to get his kicking and pass selection up to the standard it is now. Munster took a couple seasons as did Hughes. I absolutely think sharpe is at their level talent and mindset wise to do it.

Additionally, we are scared from failed experiments with so many halves in the past, but we are in the top four with him not being any where close to his ceiling.

Sandon is a very good half that should be in first grade each week. But we want to win the comp. And pretty much every team who has won the comp at least since the sharks has done it with elite halves. I don't know if Sandon is at that level, but sharpe definitely looks to have the potential.

Assuming Sharpe stays in the halves it'll be Hunt, Seve and Winter competing for it by the sound of things. McCarthy won't even be on the books if the Knights have their way so seems a long shot, and Schiller isn't even rating a mention.

Not real confident in any of them. Hunt has far more rocks than diamonds so far, and the other two are teenagers. Can only assume Dom has benefited from being outside an experienced head who can at least communicate in defence as well.
