Ex-Knights Watch

Then there’s the forgotten man Meaney who has managed to keep his spot in that Storm backline for three years. Helps that he has goal kicking and his try scoring rate has been pretty consistent over the years/teams…Not a standout for a winger but still enough to keep him in the team.
Another guy that probably doesn’t cost them a lot and until the next Fijian specimen sensation comes along he should keep that spot for the time being

I think Meaney is a lot better than Jenkins & others we might gnash our teeth over losing. Very valuable, versatile player who does provide a bit of strike.

The funny thing about Meaney is he left us because he really wanted to play fullback and we bought Ponga, so he thought his pathway was blocked.
If he'd have stayed, he would have played a lot of fullback - far more than he has at other clubs.
Injury cover for Ponga is a pretty much fulltime job.

Article about Preston Conn who made his debut for Melbourne last week.
Says he was a Newcastle Wests junior.
Says he played AJ Cup for the Knights.
Says he trained with Ball for a pre-season but never got a game.
Says Todd Lowrie offered him a trial for Melbourne Flegg side.
He had an ordinary first flegg season for Storm, but in his second year he was player of the year for the Flegg comp, captain of Storm, won both the minor and major titles and got a firstgrade pre-season and debuted in round one.

Just goes to show that you can never really predict when young guys are going to peak. Clearly, this guy was nothing special till he was about 19, and is now one of the hottest prospects in the comp.
Late to reading this one Billy - good to hear. Wouldn’t say nothing special, we just simply overlook a lot of players that other clubs seem to find the best in. Stock here in Newy is better than some give them credit for. What do they say? Beauty lies in your own backyard!? I’m seeing a multitude of backyard kids both still here and gone that don’t get a stint! Seems they feel the prospect of being “home” will keep them around. Good on them for getting valued elsewhere!

Jock Madden was excellent tonight. Always knew there was a First Grader in him.
When we lost Jock to Wests out of SG Ball, I actually thought he was one of our best ever juniors, but I never thought he'd make firstgrade because he was tiny - like 50kg wringing wet and under 5'6".
He isn't a giant now, but at least 20kg bigger than he was.
Anyway, good luck to him.
