Dylan Brown discussion

I’m not sure about the rules personally but couldn’t the IRL block Ponga from making the switch as you cannot play for a tier one nation and origin?

So couldn’t they just say “you have recently played for Queensland so we will be blocking you from representing New Zealand”?

Or is that specific rule a one way street?
He can play for NZ, he just won’t be able to play Origin again, under the current rules. That’s just an NRL/ARL rule, though.

The bigger issue is he played a Nines tournament for Aus back in the day. But I think he’s completed the minimum stand-down from that now, someone else made a similar move recently, right?

Ah ok, I’m not sure about someone making a similar move, haven’t really been paying all that much attention.

I would say he has completed the stand-down because that nines tournament was ages ago now I believe.

AJ Brimson switched to England after playing for Aus in the 9s but there’s not a stand-down period, he had to apply and be approved. Based on their reasons given for approving it seems like Ponga would also get approved but who knows.

I hope Dylbags uses missing out on the Golden Boot award as motivation to embarrass the toad judges who apparently voted against him. He a certainty copped more than his fair share of snubs this year.

It’s great seeing him in a Knights jersey.
Dylan was a standout player and looked dangerous every time he got the ball in every game and I don't think there was one Australian player who was a 'standout' performer across all games.

So Ponga, with origin. He is no longer the first choice FB. They would have him in the squad, and play him off the bench maybe. But considering Walsh now has the mortgage on the spot, that will factor in his decision to switch.

Article on Brown and the Knights.

“The Knights have been spinning their wheels in the halves for years now – since the start of 2022, they’ve changed their combination 38 times.”

It’s even worse than I thought. What a **** show. Making the finals in 23-24 was clearly in spite of the coaching not because of it.

And if we have injury in the halves we have gamble and sharpe

There’s a lot of teams that should struggle next year. Foran will be a big loss for titans they are running a team with 3 fullbacks. Souths spine will really struggle. Dragons another. Canberra without fogerty could be interesting. Even bulldogs there is a bit going on there. Are there halves woods/galvin? I’d doubt we are top 4 but a long way from last.

We're middle pack all day with plenty of upside. I'll expect us to be in with a very good shot every time we play a top 4 team.

Can see us scoring points when we need them.

Randomly just wondered who you would want over Dylan Brown lets assume at 5/8th, I can't say anyone.

6 years younger than Munster, should have been the international player of the year last year.

More I think about it more I like it and think his deal isn't that bad, players are playing longer and longer(DCE) so even at mid 30's should still be good, luck permitting.

He’s super fit. He is still young but already some much experience. Gotta say was concerned watching him play for parra in 25 and late 24, with no Moses. But he reminded us of his class in the pac champs.

I completely agree, I really don’t think there is a better 5/8 on the market and a great signing from POS. Yes it’s large but in the long run I think it will work out.

I would have said Ezra Mam before he drove while absolutely ****ed up on drugs and injured a child. And that’s not his only misstep. Tremendous player but if he’s serving a 25 year sentence in a Balinese prison in a couple years I won’t be shocked.

Everyone likes Ethan Strange for obvious reasons but it’ll be interesting to see how he goes having to take on a larger role playing besides the other Ethan or Coby Black.

Not a lot of really good, young out-and-out sixes running around atm though, you’re right, and he’s the only one who’s proven over a long period who isn’t also really old. By the same token there aren’t that many good young out and out halfbacks. A lot of teams just have two “halves” and the better/senior one wears 7 and the **** or young one wears 6. Rather than guys coming through who you look at and say “yep he’s a 7, yep he’s a 6”.

What’s interesting about this is that the teams that actually make it to and win grand finals almost every year have a 7 who’s unequivocally a 7, playing with a specialist 6. There’s not a great track record for these teams where it’s two guys who are kind of nebulous “halves”. Will be interesting to see how the other contenders go this season vs the certainty the Panthers seem to get from a combo of Cleary + a second fiddle.

I think it’s been downplayed or overlooked to an extent that Brown is now our main man in attack. You just don’t give that sort of contract, length and money, to a ballrunning 6.

I think he’s got all the tools to play 7, he did a lot of it in the Pacific Championship imo. He also has the brains which is a huge part of it.

He’s got time to make the transition, but we are 100% backing him to make a Benji Marshall / Shaun Johnson transformation from ballrunning threat to game manager.

Welcome to our halfback for the next decade!

It would be nice to be excited but unfortunately I have eyes and Brown has not done well when forced into that role with the Eels.
