why?

Do you guys remember how hard our attack sucked last year when Hilder was permanently at hooker to cover De Gois?

Hilder is a courageous defender and has been the heart and soul of this team for a few years AT LOCK. But things change.

Fact. Bennett won't be playing him at lock. If he gets game time (which I doubt) it will be at hooker.

Hilder is an average dummy half. Bennett knows this, thats why he didn't get game time. You guys are in denial.

Roberts is by a clear margin our best option for utility. He's a talented playmaker who can cover any spot in the backline. Other teams would kill to have a player like that and you tards want Hilder?

Imo thats playing Hilder out of position and away from his strengths

Not disputing Hilder is an average dummy half but please don't compare last years attack to this years. Last year Sa'u and Wes this year Gagai and Tahu. It's a case of Mercedes V Datsun 120Y.

The bench needs to be;

2 props to share minutes with the starters
1 lock to spell J Smith for 20-30 minutes
1 hooker / utility to spell Buderus for 15 minutes and cover injuries.

I would prefer that the hooker was a specialist.
Hilder or Roberts aren't the answer.

Big shame we didn't get Baptiste.

Please do not compare last years attack to a Datsun 120Y. Thats being hard on the ol 120.

I wasn't comparing last years to this years I was comparing our attack last year with periods when Hilder was and wasn't at hooker

Roberts isnt a conventional answer but he is a great answer. When he comes on we then have Kurt Gidley at hooker! What part of that is not attractive to you?

Hilder is better at hooker than Costigan, which is who we had dished up at the end of this season.

Faint praise, I know.

1. Not a fan of changing halves mid game.
2. Need to get our 2014 hooker sorted so they can get a taste of 1st grade for 10 minutes a game. Tyrone isn't our hooker in 2014 obviously, Gidley won't be either.
3. Even though he kills it at hooker, I fear for Gidley's glass body if/when he plays there.

Guess it doesn't matter in the end.
Not like we're going to win the comp next season, so I'd prefer we get our long term options sorted out in 2013.

Mark when was the last time you saw roberts slot in at fullback? or the wing? or centre? or any position other then halfback so how exactly does he fill every position in the backline? he is a better attacker then hilder but lets compare there efforts in defence shall we? I do agree that hilder is not the hooking answer but unfortunatly roberts is far from it as well, That being said id prefer just about anyone over costigan

Roberts moves better on his feet than most people in our backline. Just because his skill level is so far above playing in the centres and the wing that he has never been selected there, doesn't mean he couldn't do it if need be.

I never said Roberts to hooker. That would be crap.

My point is that you don't win a comp with Hilder at hooker

i am positive last year Roberts came off the bench to replace Gids (Who got injured) and played Flb

Or there was at least 1 game he came on to play Flb. I'm sure of it!

Everyone seems to be overrating Roberts' contribution this year. He had 3 good games(and one of those is considered good only because his goal kicking was good) otherwise he looked way out of his depth.

I don't mind the idea of him as a utility though because he has some decent footwork and he isn't up to being an 80 minute player in FG yet. That being said Hilder is a much better player and option as a utility.

So much for the David Stagg talk :P
But like you all said, Tyrone isn't our dummy half solution!
Gidley is!
Roberts comes on for Buderus and Gidley moves to hooker, with Roberts at half.... Thats the solution!
Hilder is a better hooker than Costigan, no question!
But Gidley is a better hooker than both of them and is the 2nd best hooker at Newcastle atm! (If he was to play there)

Not me, I cringed when I read that!

By the time Tyrone is 22 he will be our no1 1/2 and the halfback spot will be all his imo.

The Roberts-Hilder discussion in this thread is just tragic, tbh! Roberts playing centre and wing was the last straw!

I think your missing the point a little. The point is we have some pretty crapy options for utility.

My argument is Roberts would solve most issues as utility. Incase of emergency he could play anywhere in the backline, I don't see anything wrong with that sort of speculation, especially when Roberts is likely to end up in the 14 jumper

Utility options in the firstgrade training squad.

Hilder - lock, second row, hooker
Marvin Filipo - centre, second row, wing
Pete Mataútia - fullback, wing, centre, 5/8
Will Smith - fullback, centre, wing, 5/8, half
Api Pewhairangi - centre, 5/8, lock
Tyler Randell - centre, 5/8, lock, hooker
Tonga Likiliki - centre, second row
Toka Likiliki - wing, prop
Mitch Williams - half, hooker

How does a player play both wing and prop.? :S

I suspect it's something he did in NYC but won't get away with in the seniors. He will probably end up a 30 or 40 minute impact prop, although it would be great fun if he ended up a 120kg Jonah Lomu style winger.

Hilder at 5/8 as well, at times this season we were looking quite desperate. Tonga also is a handy winger.
