David Klemmer discussion

IMO Croker is only making mistakes because he’s asked to play outside his capabilities.
He threw one intercept that was picked off by one of the clueiest players in the comp. Other then that, he has been playing his natural game, the one that got him selected in the top grade. He has always looked to promote the ball and not just be a battery ram. It adds another dimension to our game and can make him quite dangerous close to the opposition line. I hope he continues like this, rather than having all the skills scared out of him like Jones appears to have. There is a place for natural footy players in the game.

I think there’s a difference between being a middle who can ball play a little and being expected to throw a the key pass in a big shift, if that makes sense.

Croker has thrown that style of pass successfully dozens of times on nsw cup. I went back and watched the play when I got home from the game primarily because I didn't think Walker could be onside. Not only was he onside, he moves in to a position expecting the pass. My thoughts were that it was the first time Croker had been done by video, and that it was ok because he would learn from it. I'm glad he is back in first grade because I thought he got treated pretty shabbily by the coach in the aftermath, being basically hooked and dropped. He hit back pretty strongly in the nsw cup.

Reddit is saying it’s because he blew up at a trainer and didn’t want to come off the field.

Starting to think maybe the whole Parramatta rumour may have had some legs to it.

This has nothing to do with refusing to come off the field, I've seen him and others tell the trainer to **** off all the time it happens at every club.

He obviously asked for a release to leave the club and they are punishing him in a VERY serious way.

He is over this place like the rest of us.

Building a house means very little.

I think I’ve said in the past many times that in an ideal world, we wouldn’t need Klemmer. Like, in a vacuum, an $800K prop who puts up big numbers because he’s a workhorse who plays big minutes and is really fit, but who isn’t very impactful with his running and lacks the leg speed and mobility you need to impact a game defensively as much as you want - that’s not a great investment. Klem is also a bit dumb and at his age and level of experience he should have a lot more sense about when the game calls for him to make a pass rather than cart it up again. Both Saifiti twins, at their best, agave a lot more of an impact on winning and losing than Klemmer does. A better run club would have never needed to sign Klem because a starting front row of the twins and a capable bench rotation should have been more than enough to be competitive - and his salary would be going towards a really good halfback.

Other middles like James Fisher-Harris, Isaah Yeo, Jason Taumalolo, Joseph Tapine, Payne Haas, Cameron Murray and Reuben Cotter are - for varying reasons - all much more valuable players. He was probably the best prop in the NRL when we signed him but I’m not sure he’s in the top 5 now. It sucks but them’s the breaks.

Unfortunately, we really really do need him, because he’s one of only a handful of players who put in an effort commensurate with their salary every week. He really should be comfortably winning the DB Medal which was stolen from him in 2019 this year.

Sorry HarVee I'm going to disagree here, but I think your missing one aspect to Klemmer's game that the other players around him can't seem take advantage of.

His offloads, his capacity to generate 2nd Phase play Is something any 6 year old would be able to Identify In a video session.

The fact players around him aren't around him at the ruck ready for that Isn't a Indictment on him but on those around him and coaches with those training sessions that are supposedly are up "Rooster and "Melbourne" level.

He's capable of a lot more In attack than just eating meters, yes the Safs are a bit more Impactful on their runs which I will agree with.

But I would rather see 2nd Phase plays from Klemmer offloads which can cause a defensive line to end up breaking causing something of an advantage for our attack.

Which clearly Is not the case here at Newcastle.

He was second in the NRL for offloads in 2020 then barely got any away in 2021 as soon as teams zeroed in on it, which kind of indicates he’s not super duper difficult to contain.

I agree though that the only time our attack looks good is when we do get a bit of second phase going, and that they don’t seem to be a well thought out and executed element of the game plan is definitely an indictment on the coaching staff.

Klems offloads have died completely. He does look to still, but gets wrapped up easily.

And when we do get an offload, inevitably it leads to another bland hitup.

I can't agree the only time our attack looks good is due to second phase play. Truly the only time the attack looks good is KP out wide attacking the scrum lines.

I do agree though, that we shouldn't need Klem with both Safs. Unfortunately the Safs don't have what it takes, or the coach can't get it out of them.

Last year Klemmer was looking so 5 years ago.
The new rules were making metre eater props redundant, with the best teams attacking from anywhere on the field and not needing the pigs to get them field position through grinding out the hard yards.
It's swung back a bit this year, but I still think the big metre eaters aren't worth the same money they used to be.

They’re not particularly effective offloads.

God it sounds like I’m having a go at him hahaha. He’s comfortably leading the best and fairest this year in my book, I promise. I wish I could put his motivation in Daniel & Jacob’s bodies 😂

You know, the club is such a closed book these days with barely any info around injuries, junior team lists, team selection … I feel like it’s blowing up in our face at last with this one, because there’s no info about what it’s all about and we just look like a laughing stock suspending a player for a barney with a trainer.

Yes, most of his offloads are when he is backing towards the line with a couple of blokes holding on, he gets the arm free and flops them back to someone who is flat footed. It promotes second phase play but still requires creativity. I'd like to see a half or fullback supporting him to his left as he runs at the line to maybe be in a position to take the offload on the fly? That's on the support though, not Klem.
