Dane Gagai Re-Signs with Knights until 2017

The most likely reason the manager doesn't want them to put pen to paper in a hurry is that the boys are rapidly rising in value.
Sione has gone from being worth 100k a season to 400k in 6 months.
Chanel has gone from 60k to 300k.
Pat has gone from 60k to 150k, and will probably be a firstgrader and worth 300k next year.
The manager will be seeing the dollar signs clicking over, and will want to wait and see where they stop.

On the flipside if they don't sign in the preseason, come and are heavily marked, dominated by opposition and end up back in the 20's/nsw cup, they'll be flash in the pans on second tier deals.

As Billy said, I don't mind too much that they're doing this. It's probably going to be their last chance to sign together on big money before Sione breaks out individually. They're in demand and have all the attention on them, they'd be stupid not to draw it out and play hard ball to get every dollar they can while they can and that's exactly what seems to be happening. The club just needs to step up and finalise it now.

Matt Gidley will be on KOFM at 4.40pm today to discuss what's going on with the boys

Gidleys and Stones futures depend on being able to retain our young players especially Sione, Tapine, Levi etc. if they fail in this task then there positions will be untenable.

The manager clearly has some brains. Can we swap him for Gidley and his silly MBA?

Turns out, the manager is a bulldogs man and works at Canterbury Leagues Club. Go figure!

They'll stay. Reading between the lines it sounds like their manager is feeding them bs...

So Gidley has had a chat with them and told them he wants them to stay ... excellent progress, meanwhile another club has got the paperwork done, agreed to terms and actually signed them, and our CEO has no idea what's going on, basically. Move along, no cause for concern here, typical Knights administration at work.

These newspapers aren't even bothering mentioning what they have are rumours anymore. A few days ago two news articles (on the same day) had both stated that Russel Packer had signed a contract (not allegedly, or apparently or according to rumours, but definitely), but they said he signed to two different clubs. And now we have one saying the Mata'utia brothers have signed with the Bulldogs, and one saying they haven't (well it's only saying what Midley is telling everyone). I knew these journalists were bad, but when did they get this bad?

And it turns out Matt Gildey's only experience is a fluff Master of Business Administration degree from Newcastle Uni and now he is the CEO of a multi-million dollar business. Go figure!

Your confidence in Gidley's abilities or intelligence are much more than mine. Certainly won't be the first contract negotiations this muppet has f**ked up if it all falls through.

I didn't mention Gidley? Was only commenting on their manager...

Hagan will be largely in charge of negotiations.
Interestingly, Hagan's brother was sacked from being CEO of Canterbury after salary cap rorts.

Umm about this time last year when they were saying a different person every day for 3-4 days in a row that they were a done deal to coach the Cowboys...

Some people took it as gospel on here but everyone with a brain knew that they had no idea what was going on. Same as this situation right now.

Matt Gidley says the Mata’utia brothers are ‘distraught’ at the prospect of leaving Knights

EMERGING stars Sione, Chanel and Pat Mata’utia walked into Newcastle CEO Matt Gidley’s office last Friday and told him they had signed with Canterbury.

It was the first Gidley knew of the Bulldogs’ secret deal to steal the brothers away from the Knights revealed for the first time by The Daily Telegraph on Tuesday.

“They were distraught about it,” Gidley claimed.

“We were having a chat about everything and then they just came out with: “We’ve signed something’.

“I’d been waiting for a reply from their manager to our most recent offer for them so it blindsided me a bit.”

The ‘something’ turned out to be a heads of agreement document from the Bulldogs that has been lodged with the NRL, detailing a four-year package deal for the brothers from 2016 after they come off contract in Newcastle.

It is believed to be worth $1.8 million alone for 18-year-old Sione.

Under the rules of the NRL, the Knights now have until round 13 next season to entice the brothers to stay in Newcastle and render the Dogs agreement null and void.

Gidley is adamant they don’t want to go anywhere and says the club will do everything in its power to ensure they remain at the Knights.

“Once I told them about the rules and what they had signed is not binding until after round 13 next season, they were a lot more relaxed and relieved,” Gidley said.

“I’m going to meet with them tomorrow (Wednesday) directly without their manager just to see where they are at and what they want to do going forward.

“We’ll talk about the costs of living in Sydney away from family and friends and those sorts of things.

“They are great kids but they are impressionable. I don’t think they knew what they were signing or the ramifications.”

Gidley admitted negotiations with the brothers’ manager Chris Haddad had been difficult.

“I don’t want to get into a slanging match but I’ve had other club CEOs ask me why we don’t want to keep the boys.

“Of course we want to keep them,” he said.

A guarded Haddad refused to even confirm the existence of the Canterbury deal, saying he was still negotiating with several clubs on behalf of the brothers.

“I’ll be giving Matt a ring on Tuesday next week to see if we can sort something out,” Haddad said.

Haddad denied speculation the brothers were looking to offload him as their manager.

“I have a good relationship with the boys,” he said.

I'd like to say the boys are smart enough to be playing off one side against the other and will end up with a huge deal - but realistically, they are swimming in the shark pool. It does look like it will work out for them though.
