Dane Gagai Re-Signs with Knights until 2017

One of the papers said the deal the Dogs have on the table for the three brothers is more than $3million dollars over 4 years, with Sione's component being $1.8million.

That would mean Pat and Chanel would be getting $300+k between them a year. Doesn't seem like a good idea. Hopefully they are willing to take something of a hometown discount.

My fear isn't what Sione will get but what we'll end up giving Chanel and Pat to keep him. We're not going to have an easy job keeping Mamo. From what I hear the Dragons and Dogs (typical) are already sniffing around there and are going to offer him a fair bit. The Heralds reporting that we're going to offer Gagai an "attractive" contract to stay. We're either going to lose half our backline, or they're all going to stay and we're going to have 2/3 of our cap spent on the backline. Neither option is good. I suppose though if they all stay or they all stay bar Gagai (who's the most likely to leave) that'll probably spell the end of Gids so we'll at least have his money to work with.

Is Sione worth $450k a season? I'm not sure.
Do you want to be paying two NSW Cup players $150k a year each. Definitely not.

Back when the Dogs offered that money I said no way. However now that I've seen the way he's handled FG a bit more and how he handled himself for Australia I'd happily give him that. Obviously he'd get a bit more than he's worth right now based on his potential but I wouldn't mind doing that given he's a low risk/high reward type of player. At worst he's a capable first grader that can play anywhere in the backline. He wasn't sensational on the weekend but he was still a very capable replacement...which is pretty great for an 18-year-old playing out of position.

Now if we gave someone like Mamo that kind of money based on nothing but his potential I'd have a heart attack but Sione is a different kettle of fish. We don't need to talk about the future with him - although obviously he's 18 so we can't even see his ceiling at the moment. We can talk about the here and now and we know he's going to be a first grader at the very very least.

Completely agree about Chanel and Pat though. Pat hasn't even played first grade for God sake and looks very unlikely to this year either. Chanel would be handy to keep around but you wouldn't want it to be on much when he's a 4th/5th choice winger.

Having read the RLW article I have to say, what a joke of a manager. Asking for compensation for what? For getting them to sign something they seemed sketchy on and didn't want to in the first place?. The guy clearly saw dollar signs over the brothers heads because of the commission he would make off of their deals and got another team to jump the gun so the Knights would make a counter-offer. And them being 18 and young and not knowing any better, he took advantage of it.
If Boyd doesn't decide to be depressed, then Sione might not have even played first grade and Haddad might not have even given a crap about them, or getting this sort of deal. If the brothers back out on the Bulldogs deal and stay at the Knights then he shouldn't get a cent from them because as it said in the article they instructed the Knights not to negotiate with Haddad, therefore he didn't get them the deal.

The whole Bulldogs thing was a bad call by the manager, but you have to be fair to him. He has been looking after all four boys since they were kids - since Sione was in nappies probably - and he did a lot for them when any sort of payday for him was either years away, or not going to happen at all. The family was very poor, and i've heard the manager did a lot to get them the things they needed to play the game, largely because he was Pete's first coach and believed they all had a big future. He probably deserves something for his efforts.

With the way the salary cap is these days, what $6.5 million or something & rising every year, I think it's worth paying them that. $150k in the NRL isn't that much anymore, it'd still feel wrong to pay Pat that much but if it's going to keep them all around it's probably a small sacrifice.

Pat isn't worth a coke and a pie, he's totally useless in FG. Chanel is a quality wing option for any team, I'd really like to keep him for 150k

Considering Minimum is what 100k, 150k is like you said nothing any more!

Really getting over this whole thing, how hard is it for Sione to say he wants to stay and sign with us.

Why drag it on so much, the only reason for it to drag on is for more money.

Because they're in the process of getting rid of their manager.

What happened to Pat Mata'utia?
I remember Billy was talking up Pat's amazing skills and that he should start ahead of Gagai in round 1.

Broke his leg in the first trial.
Don't think it was a bad break because they weren't sure it was broken till he had scans, but still probably 10 weeks or so till he could play i imagine.

That's a shame.
Which round should we expect him back?

They are just saying indefinate on the injury reports for him and Feeney (who broke his arm in the same game), but he broke it 3 weeks ago, so i'm going to guess round 8.

As much chance of being picked ahead of Gagai as I am of being picked as the next Pope.
Well, at the time of the discussion Gagai had picked up an injury that may have been serious enough to keep him out of the early rounds and Pat was just about the only centre option in full training (Gagai Injured, BJ and Sione not yet back to training).
Pat gets a lot of hate, mostly from manager who loves to hate on anyone he sees as a threat to Gagai.
I have to say I find the Pat hate a bit bizarre. He is a great young bloke who showed a fantastic fighting spirit when our Ball side won a national title a few years ago, and since then he has done nothing except work hard to improve himself.
Stone loves the guy because of his good attitude, so I have no doubt that he will eventually get a chance, and I expect he will grab his chance when he gets it, like all three of his brothers did.
His injury came at a bad time for him, but no doubt he will get another chance if he keeps working hard.

You got a funny memory Billy.
At the time of discussion, Gagai was not injured.

Lol at "Gagai is in trouble"
I doubt Gagai has trouble sleeping at Knight knowing Pat is going to take his spot.

I think the injury he may have been referring to is when he slid down that railing in town....remember? It was at the very beginning of pre season.

Or I may be way off the mark too.
