Confirmed: Knights sign Mason for 2012 season

I read that he played a little wider like a backrower. I thought Bennett gave Rip strict instructions on how to play him? A lot of people have suggested that the Knights problems lay in the front row department.

It will be interesting to see how he is used in 1st grade following this NSW Cup debut...

Getting into the gifs I see Matty.

Played a bit of both. We had Tui, Faas and Rochow doing a good job up the middle. He definitely defended on the edges and ran up the middle.

In saying that his 20m charges were on the edges. You can watch that video that Aidos has just posted.

There are a few things the video has missed but it's some good footage anyhow.

The video says a few things. He needs matches under his belt. The couple of errors he made were more out of tiredness than ill discipline. Although NSW Cup he still looks well and truly capable of being a threat in first grade. In this video and others I've never seen Mason so happy. And finally still the joker as he squirted the opposition bench with water as he walked past.

Yeah but he also looks a little bit out of confidence. As a senior player who has been around I wouldn't mind him Gee-ing up his own players and getting vocal. He looks pretty good though and had some nice hits.

Ken Sutcliffe just said he's probably going to be in the game against Penrith.

Were you at the game yesterday? He was so vocal it was sometimes a tad overboard. In the warm up he blew up at Faas and Wes because they were leaving too quickly. And I mean 'F*cking wait! Wait! F*ck me'.

As he walked off at half time he stuck his middle finger up to a mate of his in the crowd and laughed and turned it into a wave. Then as he ran back onto the field he pinched Steve Folkes on the ar*e.

Other notable mentions was when he went to go back onto the field he walked passed the Cutters bench, picked up their drink bottle... had a drink then kept running lol also at Half Time he was saying how he was struggling nice and loud, and also at Fulltime he let the whole stand know it was only a cramp injury.

If he is named in the NRL side to play Penrith, someone observe his talk during warm up. I bet it's going to be a lot more upbeat with him there.

He is a larrikan an by no means am I saying that's a bad thing. He had the teams best interest at heart yesterday, it was great to see.

Nay unfortunately I only have the video to go off. It's good then he's being heaps vocal

Craig Smith precedent offers hope for Mason at the Knights

- Compares Craig Smith to Mason, as Newcastle were in a similar position in 2005, needing a big man & struggling for form or confidence. 33 year old Smith, a former NZ test & Origin player, was going to retire playing in the Wollongong competition before getting the call from Hagan.

- Smith made his debut off the bench for the Knights, scoring a try, carrying the ball 105m & making 17 tackles without missing in 33 minutes. Went on to play 22 straight games that year making more metres than any other Newcastle forward (2885) & making the second most tackles (639). Played 23 of a possible 26 games in 2006.

- Mason, in his last stint in the NRL, played all 24 games, making the the most metres (2561) out of any Cowboys forward apart from Matt Scott, fifth in tackles (395) & first in offloads (37).

Exactly, Smith was a toiler in the current Luke Bailey mold. Consistent player, who although in the twilight of his career would give you 25-30 tackles a game, and 15 hitups for 120m.

Mason is a show pony type player who could be rocks or diamonds week to week, who might only play limited minutes with more of an impact, and give more a 10 hitup, 100m type game, with 15-20 tackles.

We already have our Craig smith type player in SNowden, what we need from Mason is to provide go-forward when he is off the field.

I think the article is comparing how they are both coming back mid-season from semi-retirement to fill a gap in our side, though ...
