Confirmed: Knights sign Boyd for four years

His defence is very questionable, and he can be terrible under the high ball.
I rarely judge a fullback on their defensive ability. If he is having to defend it means your front line has been broken which is where you should be worried. Sure a strong defensive fullback will stop the odd try but it's hardly something you look at when picking a player to play there

McDonnell is in the top 3 for try savers one on one. Not alot wrong with his defence there. His positional play close to the line defending grubbers is questionable.

He wont get a gig with Gidley and Boyd in the side. End of story.

The guy can dance though, so you never know he may be working with the cheer squad next year to keep him fit for Origin time, when Boyd & Gids are out.

In the 1950's when the French could really play RL there was a fullback named Puig Aubert who was notorious for sneaking a quick ciggy while he lingered at the back...... He also refused to tackle anyone who broke the defensive line and came at him...... He reckoned that it was not his job, it was the forward's job........ Boy was he a sniper though! Wonderful goalkicker.

What a boss!

I also agree, when picking a fullback I don't really mind if their defense is shockers. Generally all they need to do is be a speed hump, enoguh so that chasers can catch up.

I dont see many issues with Mcdonnells defence TBH, for a lightweight he is pretty good. Positional play sometimes lets him down, but one-on-one he stops most linebreaks. Depending on the money he is on, I think he'd be a good reserve grader to have during origin. Under 100k of coarse. But he is a hard worker, who doesnt shy away from the tough stuff. He had all the talent in the world as a junior, and even though he has lost his speed and agility, its still not too bad, and I think WB would be able to use him well. The price is the major sticking point though, but off-contract, he may be willing to stay around because he isnt going to walk into a starting position anywhere in the comp, except if he as a winger, and even thats a stretch.

mcdonnell will earn more than that at another club the guys good his all round game is very good and has done everything right 4 us so far and he left a 200,000 contract to come here 4 a chance to play continuos 1st grade ............and do u think bennett has a plan 4 rogers he is a talent just his temper and his choices are not very good maybe wayne thinks he can change that next yr and if not then his contract will be up anyway

Apparently on the live blog chat Bennett did, he confirmed Boyd will be fullback next year which was for the time being maybe an 80-90% chance of happening anyway. Don't know about Gidley though. I still am not really sure and don't think Buderus will be coming back.

How good does it feel to have this bloke locked up for the next 4 years! Easily the Dragons best tonight, thought he was outstanding in every aspect of play tonight.

He's an awesome talent but does his poor try scoring record worry you?

No. He does what the team needs, and the Dragon's style of play doesn't really favour a fullback sneaking in wherever he wants on inside balls and super long range tries. You saw last night Boyd's job in attack was to come in as another half and feed the ball, a lot, a lot like Brett Stewart on many occasions, except Brett Stewart also runs off the halves during broken play. Darius doesn't look to tear people up in open play with speed, he has a game which favours ball playing and has the size to bust tackles.

No not at all. He isn't a try scoring fullback which I don't mind, what he dosen't score he makes up for it with a mountain of try assists, line breaks, line break assists and can burst through the line most of the time, very special player. I'm sure if he concentrated on scoring try's and worried less about setting them up he could probably score heaps but he is a much better ball player IMO.

He has scored 7 tries this season which isn't too bad, but the best part of his game is how tries he sets up. I can't for the connection between him and Uate, we should see alot of tries come from it.

I don't know about that, those sweeping plays that the Dragons do are always on the left, Soward to Fien/Hornby to Boyd to Cooper to Morris. Unless Uate plays on the left next year or Boyd learns to do those plays right, Uate won't be on the end of those plays i don't think

They are mainly on the left because thats their strongest side. Mullen passes better left to right anyway.
