Biggest disappointments (players)

I’ve been wondering who is your biggest disappointment a player who started with us who had all the potential to be a club great but didn’t kick on.

Who comes to mind is Corey Paterson or Daniel Tolar, even Con Mika all highly touted but didn’t really kick on to the rep seen or consistent first grade. Another I reckon we didn’t get to see the absolute best of was Milton Thaiday

Danknights is on record as saying the club let Milton Thaiday down badly, I find that story unforgivable.

1 Lauchie Miller
2 Justin Ryder
3 Russell Richardson
4 Shibasaki
5 Mocredreke
6 Scott Briggs
7 Beau Henry
8 Jesse Sue
9 Lee Crooks
10 Hethrington

David Seage through no fault of his own. The Sims brothers. Some young rep quality front rowers during Joey's last six years or so who didn't realise what they had and let him do too much work for them (I believe shortening his career) and were lambasted by Craig Smith for not even putting in enough to force him back to the bench at about 47 years of age.

Lee Jackson. Chris Joynt for doing his acl. Joe Wardle. Bailey Hodgson. Dom for leaving early. Hopefully our current poms buck the trend.

Great shout! I reckon he could’ve played for Queensland at his best. I reckon Trent Sekald is another shout was a great finisher just had his career ruined by the kidney issue.

Dylan Phythian. Injury and personal issues ended his career before it could get going.
Paterson is a good shout, he was such a great talent could’ve been anything.

Geez Thaiday’s form for the first half of 2006 (until injury I believe) had me convinced we’d found our fullback for the next decade, along with NSW (or Queensland, not sure who he’d have been eligible for) and Australia’s! He was absolutely electric!!! What a shame he always seemed to have off-field demons which prevented him fulfilling his potential.

For some reason Trent Estatheo’s name popped into my head, and googling led me to this thread from 2008 which details his Dad injecting him with horse steroids! 😳 Which I had totally forgotten.

Also the entire thread turns into a complete debacle and I come in and completely annoy Billy, so sorry about that Billy! I think with 16 years’ hindsight I can say the since banned “TippleNickler” was the one who was in the wrong there. 😂

Anyway, my comments in this post still apply:

As for Estatheo, when I saw this guy I thought he was bloody awesome. There was another Knights email group I was part of back from about 1997, and if you looked back at the messages from around 2002/03 I was always asking when he was coming back from his injuries, hoping he would be able to recover. He looked the most talented prop in his few first grade outings (I actually can't believe it was only three!).

Who knows how much of that was down to steroids, not a lot I reckon. They might have given him some height, but their effect on his muscles would have surely worn off by 2002? The other thing I am wondering is if those steroids could have caused the knee injuries which forced his retirement? I think he did both knees in quick succession, or he did the same one twice, and that is why he called it quits.

I would have rated him above any of our juniors coming through at the same time, he seemed to have more potential than Woolnough, who emerged in the same season. I know it's weird to say on the back of three games off the bench, but I really had him pegged for origin or something a bit down the line.

It's a tragic story, I feel really sorry for the guy, but at least he is still involved in the game he loves. That dad should be locked up.

Here's another photo of him, I think this would have been the framed jersey on the wall behind him during the interview. :(

Beau Henry
Thought the same. He was regarded as a certain FG halfback with a huge ceiling. Was about as dominant in the juniors as they come.

He entered FG the same season as DCE from memory, with DCE coming from the QLD Cup with a fraction of the hype of Henry. One player took to FG immediately and won a Premiership that year and the other struggled to recreate any of the form as the Toyota Cup halfback of the year two years running.

Next thing you know WB comes to town and Henry is moved on. That one broke my heart at the time because I was so convinced he was 'that guy' and I still believed in the prophecy of a return to glory of the 7 jersey.

I still believe

Not sure what happened with him and Wayne. However when he did get on the field he played pretty well for us and the titans. The Bennett stink carried with him

We signed Beau Henry and Luke O'Donnell's younger brother to top squad positions after they were the two standouts in the National Youth Comp.
It turned out the NYC was a joke comp where tackling was optional, and both these guys failed dismally when they had to play against men.
The NYC comp had all the best young guys playing against each other only, and not trying themselves out against seniors, and it turned out they were basically playing touch and the guys who looked fantastic at that level were often unable to survive in the physical grind of seniors.
Kyle O'Donnell was a massive disappointment - player of the year in NYC for Cronulla and never looked capable of playing reserve grade here, despite having a brother who was much smaller than him and one of the toughest guys in the game.

Since that time I always take a ot of notice how young guys go in reserve grade. It's make or break for many young guys, although there are also a lot that go badly in their first game of reserves and come back much better the next time, after they have seen where they need to be.

Siuatonga Likiliki was another who fell into the same category.
