Bennett: We've taken a step backwards

Hunter Ports Newcastle Knights coach Wayne Bennett knows there is plenty of work ahead after he called his side’s 24-14 loss to the Titans their ‘worst of the season’.

Speaking after the game, Bennett was most disappointed with his troops defence after they had made good progress in recent weeks.

“We got sloppy tonight, there was no intensity in our defence at all, as a result we kind of got run over and missed tackles,” Bennett said.

“The last couple of weeks we’ve turned over the ball and given up too much field position which creates a lot of pressure. Tonight we controlled the ball better, but forgot to defend, we’ve made errors throughout the year, but not to the extent of letting in easy tries like that.

"It’s probably the most disappointed I’ve been all year, you hope by week twelve you start to win a few battles, but tonight we just went backwards.

"
When asked about what changes will be made, Bennett retained his view that the best men available will be picked - a job the he said, that is getting more difficult each week.

“When you pick teams you always try to pick your best players, the problem is no one is taking their opportunity when they get it.
“The hardest thing at the moment is that I have to pick the team, if they were playing like they should they would be picking themselves.

"There’s only three or four guys saying 'I deserve to be in the side due to my performances,' the rest are dishing up a whole heap of indifferent performances which leaves me to make a decision - sometimes you get those decisions wrong.

"
Knights fill-in captain Chris Houston felt for his coach, who he believes is doing everything possible to get the club on track. The second-rower putting particular emphasis on the fact that it is the men on the field, not off it, that must turn their game around.

“I guess we just got off on the wrong foot tonight and struggled to stop their momentum,” Houston said.

“It’s down to attitude, and tonight we just didnt front up the way we should, we should have brought a lot more energy than we did.
“It was embarrassing, especially in front of our home fans, they deserve more effort than that.

Bennett agreed with his captain, saying that whilst Knights fans are disappointed, no one is more disappointed than themselves.

“I know the fans are impatient, but no one is more impatient than myself, Bennett said. “I’m embarrassed, and I’m embarrassed in the way we are playing.

“If we could wave a magic wand we would do that, but we can’t. I understand why people are frustrated, but there's no frustration greater than mine, or the others at the club.

“I’ve been in this situation before. I know what’s in front of me, and I know how to handle what I’ve got at the moment. At the end of day, I always get where I want to go and it won’t be any different here.”

I don't know why Bennett cops it on here. Every single time I see him interviewed, he makes perfect sense ... is honest about how we're playing, and more often than not gives us a blast for playing poorly!

Most of our players on the other hand ... pathetic. No other word for it.

I'm sorry i've been so negative on this forum. But i can't be the only one who's come to terms with the knights losing ways. It's made me legit hate the sport, sad but true. I wish i could go for another team that wins but sadly i can't go for another team. Their like my family so i'm stuck with these losers for life and i can't take it anymore :hand:

I'm considering becoming an afl fan again. That's right at one point the knights and league agitated me that much i had to jump ship for my own sanity

They are not happy campers.
It's pretty clear that the boys are playing with less heart every week - and putting contract negotiations on hold, signing Willie Mason, and having Taia jump on the first bus out of town are all things that are not exactly boosting morale.
Bennett is supposed to be a guy who has good relationships with players, but he has lost this group for now.

This all appears to be true from the outside, and it just goes to show what a pea-hearted bunch of players they are.

Why would you not put in the effort and prove that you should be re-signed ... and attempt to do something to make your supporters proud?

Thank god we did sign Mason, he's the only forward who's playing with a semblance of passion and effort.

I don't know who on earth we'd get to replace them, but frankly there's not an off-contract player I'd bother re-signing at the moment. And the way they're going, they don't have a future in the NRL at any club.

Bennett is only the coach...it's up to the players to go onto the field and play to their ability, unfortunately ...their NOT.

It's not the first time they have thrown their toys out of the cot when things haven't gone their way ... Remember 2009 when Smith signed with the Roosters, they stopped putting in and pretty much threw the season away, resulting in Smith leaving before the season was out.

I guess that's the culture that Bennett and our other coaches have been up against. Winning isn't their top priority.

Please Bennett isnt even trying. He blames not having the players yet and one who plays Supercoach could field a better side. Bennett is playing hard ball with the Tinkler group behind the seens and wants to clean out alot of the contracts. He not really worried about this season at all and waiting to get the players hes earmarked for recuitment.

Happy with that media conference. After that I think The Knights should impose a media ban on themselves. If I read one more cliche article about why the players are underperforming and how they are gonna start working for each other I will not be happy!

I play for less money then these fools. When one team supporters there I play my gu 60ts out to give them what they came to see. I get $60 a game im 28, 92kg second rower with a bad left leg. I play harder then some of these fairies. Snowden is a cat on 400k a season and no rep games he should be averaging 200 metres. Im disgusted!!

Bennett might be looking to shred a few players and rightfully so after what a lot of our players have produced this year, but it's ridiculous to say he's not trying.

This is your opinion??

Watching the game last night we had absolutely zero intensity in attack. No support runners following the forwards, no depth when spreading it out wide, forwards receiving the ball from a standing start and 3 metres to wind up before getting crunched, no decoy runners,no game plan and generally no idea. I haven't seen a fast play the ball or a squirt from dummy half all year. The only way we look like scoring is a lucky bounce from a kick.
The fact that we scored 2 late tries to make the game closer than it really was is bad because it masks how dire the situation is in terms of attack.
Is anyone missing Kurt yet? Even with his brain explosions, he is easily the most dangerous attacker we have.

Well arnt u a hero lol, why arnt u makin the grade then if u have all the answers? Mate probably more ppl then u think on this site have played football at a grade level in our local comps, dosnt mean we wouldn't look like chumps at Nrl level,

Sayin you play harder is a bit far fetched, it's a different ball game, runnin ur mouth about Bennett as well obviously u know everything u could be our next captain coach.

The team will always miss Kurt. He gives us structure, and he makes us look much more organized. The win loss ratio when Kurt isn't playing speaks for itself.

Turf them all out then if that's the case. It's clearly an attitude thing. To have a guy we sign mid season run 14 times for 147m and really stick it up the Titans is disgraceful for all our other forwards.

Houston is an utter myth IMO and I mean in attack more than anything.

Moving Taia to the bench was dumb. Edwards sucks.

Well arent we tough on a computer. You saw it last night chump. Mason who is on a incentive based contract was the only one having ago. Hes 3rd game for the knights. My comment was about the lack of heart in the team. And yes champ i have it in spades .Cause iv followed the knights for a long time and that performence last night was some of the most unintrested and lack luster effort iv ever seen. How much effort you put ins got nothing to do with what level of footy you play. Oh and your the only one on this sited whos been stupid enough to disagree with me!
