That may have changed if we're targeting someone like Dom Young. Many in England didn't rate him because of questionable hands and defensive positioning but obviously an athletic freak, which you can't coach

I think the other big factor that is playing out now is the lack of genuine leaders we have brought up through the ranks or bought in to build that team culture. One thing Brown did do early was buy players like Guerra for his leadership and drive and then we got Pearce...we just don't have any calibre of leadership in the playing roster or coming up through the ranks...this is a big piece of the puzzle that needs to be filled if we are going to change the culture around the place.

Maybe it isn't something he wants to take on or won't suit his personality but I wouldn't mind Dane formally stepping up and being given that role just to see what it does for him and for the team...there is nobody else I can see in the immediate squad that has that presence or potential

When they had a mic on him in one of the early games Dane was pretty vocal, I think he already is a leader in the group.

Yeah....I suppose I really want to see what it does to him and the squad if we make him THE leader out on the field - I think it might take him and the team to another level, if he is up for it - but more importantly, we just don't have that on the ground at present.

O'Brien makes the point whenever he is asked about recruitment that he is not in charge of that (The Scott Morrison defence - Not my job to do that).
It rings hollow with Morrison, because his job is whatever he says it is, but O'Brien certainly has a point.
As far as I can see, we went into this season with a very young squad and a lot of money unspent - and then injuries smashed us and left us playing 5 or 6 guys with a handful of NRL games between them (Thompson, Croker, Sasagi, Crossland, Hoy, Young, Momoisea, Clune, Randall).
I don't have anything against any of those players, but if we are playing any more than 2 or 3 of them in any game, we are in trouble.
 
I'm pretty sure lamb left we didn't get rid of him we signed Mitch and said Connor would have first crack at partnering him and lamb would have to fight to get it from him then his manager said no he is a starting halfback and asked to leave and then went to be Cooper Cronk understudy and never kicked on
 
Surely his job must be on shaky ground if we lose this week. He has the team together for the whole week with minimal distractions and he really has to turn around the poor attitude of just going though the motions as they did in the second half last week

He has had 2 full seasons at the club and has made finals both years, how does anyone in their right mind let a poor start to the year cloud their judgement on how he has been going overall.
Injuries have killed us this year plus the loss of Pearce and Brailey in the preseason (over 400 games of experience in our spine) and replaced it with 50 games.
Still plenty of time left in the year, this conversation should be had in October. No need to jump the gun IMO.
 
Granted we did make the final eight, but we weren't going to trouble any of the teams above us. I guess we are all frustrated at the team's recent performances and I just hope we can turn it around this weekend

Well whoever is in charge of assembling the squad definitely needs to be given the boot, because our top 30 is way off the pace this season. It’s a shambles, that squad.

Making the finals largely because of a favourable draw means absolutely **** all if we don't compete in the finals. That's the whole point of playing finals.

AOB perhaps shouldn't be considered a failure, but he cannot nearly be considered a success either. And so if he cannot get this 17 up to beat the Bulldogs, or at least compete in style in a close defeat, we need to be asking what we can expect from him as a coach moving forward
 
In the 2 years and half years that he has been at the club I've seen us play maybe half a dozen games where we looked like a quality team with the ball in hand. 2 of those games coming in rounds 1 and 2 this year.

That's a huge problem that can't be understated because without that structure and prowess in attack we'll never be legitimately competitive.

Maybe it is a result of the club being defensively focused, which we've excelled at tbf. But winning footy games requires more than quality defence
 
Still can't get my head around how we look like top 4 material in the first 3 rounds and then totally forget how to defend and attack.....it absolutely boggles the mind.

Either these players are extremely stupid or they are tanking.

I think a big part of it is that our roster isn't as good as we thought it was after round 2/3 and we probably out-performed our reasonable best for two rounds before certain realities beset us. Take Kurt Mann for example, he was in everything and hitting like a truck for a few weeks. Despite his big heart he can hardly be expected to keep that up - he's not a forward.

Then you've got Clune and Clifford who were not on anyone's watch list. And were making the most of running opps against unsuspecting defenders made easier again by the players around them doing their jobs, in formation. Etc.

Paul Gallen said that we had peaked early. At the time I took offence to it. I look at it now and realise that he obviously knows a hell of a lot more about footy than me lol

This is such a ridiculous line of criticism. Even ignoring the fact that every player in the comp is in the same position, so it literally can't be the thing that differentiates our players.

The vast vast majority of NRL players got to the league because they worked really hard. It's an incredibly competitive field. There's a handful of athletic freaks that could coast and still have decent careers, but they're an exception.

And the vast vast majority of NRL players are aware that their playing career is finite. They are still financially motivated to perform well to get an upgraded contract, or be retained when their contract is over.

'They just don't care' is a criticism borne out of ignorance and 'copium' - There's definitely an easy fix to our structural issues, just get the players to try harder...
