2026 Recruitment And Retention

Doesn't explicitly say that he's upgraded for this year. The top 30 is currently full but hypothetically he could be taking Sullivan's spot if/when that opens up. Wouldn't change anything about his availability but would get him a bit more money this year which might help explain why he turned down other offers to stay (have to think he'd get more than 1-year offers elsewhere).

Winter is already a development player for this year and next as mentioned. Hagan will step right into Graham's spot there next year.

Decent money for a reserve grader is the concern. We had a few of those last year, Elliott/Hetheringron, not pulling their weight, hope Niukore is not on the same decline.

He wont be a reserve grader. He'll be bench or starter, same mould as Frizz but also a wonderful leader for our junior forwards. No one knows how much was paid for him.

I’m still spewing we didn’t get Barney back. 😭 If we got him back, I think we are way more of a chance for a premiership. And he’s going to Brisbane which rubs salt into the wounds.
Considering we've likely paid at least $450-$550k for Nuikore, it makes missing Barnett for an extra 200k feel like a lost opportunity.

Very very few rep standard middles are dying to get to Newy to play with the boys. Perhaps Barnett is too injury prone and perhaps that was at the centre of concerns around the player

I was thinking about this the other day.

Hopefully with a spine that is firing and playing some great footy, we are in a position where players don’t need lots of money to come here. We are starting to be able to sell them a dream, a plan, and hopefully their part in winning a premiership ring.

If I’m Safs (or any forward) playing in 2025 Knights, I’m feeling a bit off it. I have to put my body on the line, feel the pain for a few days for what? Little chance of winning. Not contesting kicks. Halves with the creativity of a brick. It must be hard to motivate yourself in those situations and nor does it seem very appealing to want to go play there. Unless they are setting me up for life - Brown.

Contrast to now. Where we have creativity. brown and Ponga combo is locked in for the foreseeable future. Sharpe and Crossland doing solid work. I’m much happier charging in, putting myself on the line, because I know my crafty spine players can work their magic, and they’ll be better off if I can get them a quick PTB or extra metres etc.

Hopefully translates to some discounts when recruiting players and a bit more interest.

Knights announce Greg Marzhew extension. Says three-year deal after Toohey just said it would be a two-year deal, so maybe a secret option on the third year but nothing specified in the announcement.

Crazy how one off season under Hikbrook has brought about this level of change. Long may it continue. Be nice to be talking about Holbrook as one of the great coaches in years to come
