2026 Recruitment And Retention

With Gagai leaving next year I can understand why they want to try and retain Marz. It would be difficult to replace both of them next year.

Fletcher Hunt is next in line. De Courcey, Seve and Winter will all have their chances over the next few years to cement a spot in the backline
It's a decent place to be with Gagai at the end. We just have to try and pick the best few to invest in.

If Hunt, De Courcey, Winter and Seve all show themselves capable of playing first-grade, the nature of the salary cap will draft them out to other NRL teams that will play them. Even McCarthy could establish himself as a solid NRL player with no frills.

If they're good enough, you can't keep them all unfortunately, imagine Latrell and RTS still at the Roosters or Ponga and Hammer still at the Cowboys.

Speaking of which, it’s said POS is trying to retain him (Marzhew) on a reduced contract which I fully agree with, and I know no one actually knows the money as it’s private but does anyone know roughly what he is on.

Surprised if Marz doesn't take the reduced offer for a year and then put himself back on the market for 28 when PNG come in.

I hope Gags plays on in the Super League, even in his mid-30s, I'd imagine he'd lift the level of most SL teams in ability, performance and professionalism.

Has anyone heard anything about Marata? last I heard was that it was close and they were waiting on his agent to get back from a holiday, but than it all went quiet, and haven’t heard anything since, are they still waiting?.

Announcement should be today or tomorrow according to Toohey.

Also been some speculation the Niukore deal could push McEwen out which Toohey says he'll address in his article today.

McEwen gets better with every game. He should be a priority re-signing as he looks to be part of the future at the Knights.
Get it done Knights head office!
I couldn't help but laugh that the forum was in melt down 2 weeks ago that he wasn't going well. BTW i agree he is getting better but its a slow process he will break some eggs along the way. We need to be patient with our juniors, we need them coming through to help us balance the cap.

Doesn't hurt that they are coming into a winning team . Not many have been in that position for a while😀

I think we are at the stage where we just sit back and go with what we have unless some super star becomes available at below cost.
We have shown with results excluding big time players injured that we can compete.
Yes we will lose a few players like Gagai, Frizell, Gamble, Jones but all are well covered by players putting in big time in Cup, or sitting on bench in firsts.
Gagai could be replaced by DeCourcey or McCarthy. Frizell by Manuuleleau, ESL. Hopwood and Crouch. Gamble by Sharpe/Brown, Jones already covered by Manuleleau and ESL
Some might not quite be ready as replacements now but will be by season end and definitely by start 2027.
Unless the available player is top notch then why pay big dollars for same type, rather upgrade and retain our young up and coming future stars, yes all won’t necessarily make it but most will if looked after and developed.
Players not mentioned but going well in Cup that give us depth are Schiller, Taukamo, Hunter, Kepaoa, Hagan, Saulo and Hola.
If I had to pick the type of player we could do with it would be a big strong hard running Prop.
