2025 Recruitment And Retention

Telegraph article on it tells a bit of a different story. It claims there's talk one of the clubs (mentions Canberra and Bulldogs) are offering up to $900k per year for four years, though it also says another source denies that number is true. Goes onto say it's believed it's actually the Knights who have decided to pull out in the wake of the above figure.

Anybody surprised? You don't want to be here good riddance.

Chase the money I get it, but maybe show you deserve the overs getting offered. So glad we aren't getting into another Dsaf situation.

See how quick Lucas signed, no fuss...that's a player who wants to be here, that's the type of players that will win us a comp.

900k is outrageous.
Glad we didn't go there if true

Yeah. All power to Leo and his family getting paid ******** amount of money. Gotta make it whilst you can. He’s also going to Canberra for his and his partners family.

Kudos to knights to not being stupid.

We offered him good money. He wanted more. Glad we aren’t going down another Dsaf route.

Lucas and Gamble are two of my favourite players. Team first players that play their heart out for the club.

A lot was made of D-SAF form dropping off but Leo was 100% in the same boat last year, granted he is younger but it was worrying that we were going to be throwing $600-700k at him and other teams apparently offering upto $800-850

Think Leo reading too much of his own press and hype lately

It might just be time to blood Sua,Bryan and Hopwood early though heat for 2026 and surely if he goes to raiders like speculated someone like Trey Mooney or Jake Clysdale won’t be happy and will want out and we should grab them up
Yeah no need to be throwing 800k at props. If other teams want to do that to their salary cap let them enjoy

100%

Not sure I quite get this comment, he’s had heaps of interest and has clearly chosen one of those other clubs after him.

I doubt we were far away from other clubs in terms of our offer.

Huge issues for us atm in both recruiting and retaining talent.
I’m mainly quoting that in we apparently upgraded offer to around $600k but othered offering $750-800ish if rumours right

Ive thought all along $500-600k would be fair but if somebody offered more than that then he would be silly too knock it back

Between raiders and dogs neither are really closer to us for a comp win, all pretty much level so it’s gotta be more lifestyle based with going back towards family in Canberra

Retention wise I’ll still hold out to see what they can do replacement wise for Leo, they might yet pull a magic rabbit out of a hat and we are all nodding our heads and saying great work

Fingers crossed anyway 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

I say go for Jake Clydesdale if Leo want to go early. U19 Prop big big boy big motor and I just realised is Adam Clydesdales brother. Do your thing Yasmin. Being the boy home to Newy. 😉😂

Awesome stuff!

Not surprising though, they stuffed up completely by not topping up his contact last year, once he’d relegated DSaf to the bench.

The Knights are one of the last teams that can afford to sit back and let players feel underpaid. It breeds resentment and they’ve let him feel undervalued for almost two years.
Who knows if they even had the cash this year too top him up and he was offered his upgrade for next year and still on reported $375k this year compared to Crokes and Jones who are probably on the base $130k this year and next year and maybe last 2-3 years.

If he is throwing tantrums about feeling underpayed and undervalued then maybe it’s a good thing he is going as he will be nothing but negative and that not what the club needs.

Plenty of juniors and young guys who would kill to be in his position as starting front rower on still decent enough money and playing international footy

Jake is only on development next year too so would be an ideal swap situation of 1 top 30 in Trey Mooney and 1 development guy in Jake for swap of the Thompson brothers who who both will likely go as a package deal in 2026

If he's getting silly money, good luck to him. Paying overs to him keep would have been bad as well.

Any chance they release him early in a trade and sign Matt Lodge as a bargain replacement?

If the other club has enough cap space, I expect Tyrone will leave as well.
Didn't the Roosters sign Dom's brother, never to be heard of again...but likely still cashing his cheques at Bondi?

But I hope we can just turn Tyrone into the new Leo.

PS. Leo didn't exactly set the world alight last year, this signing was always about his potential. Whichever team got him, if the reports of silly money are true, is taking a big risk on a middle forward.
