2025 pre season thread

Guymer looks a pretty good prospect, very much a versatile middle/edge type like Brodie, but I'm not sure that's a big need.

Ogden? Gee I don't know. Throw a rock down any street in Western Sydney and you'd probably hit seventeen Polynesian blokes just like him.

Neither option feels like something that should be holding up a release for mine if the club wants the roster slot and cap space back.

Parra's roster is in a weird spot. The only players I'd really want in a player swap are ones they would never ever give up (so, Moses and Brown) or young spine prospects who have already been pinched by other clubs (Ethan Sanders, Blaize Talagi and Matt Arthur). Honestly I look at what their halves have to work with and think Les might actually be right that Moses could conceivably ask for a release hahaha. The bloke is staring down the barrell of burning the final 5 or so years of his career on a bunch of soft ****s and overpriced plodders.

We Australians have an expression from a classic Australian movie called The Castle, it is “tell him his dreaming”.
Yeah, Matty Johns mentions that film a lot on his podcast. Haven’t found a way to stream it in the UK yet. Supposed to be a good lark.

Btw, I was being facetious with my Brailey / Moses comment, just in case you thought I was being serious.

So Elijah Salesa leaumoana is another young guy flying under the radar.
He did a firstgrade pre-season and started in Flegg in 2024, but was very quickly promoted to reserve grade and was on fire in the early rounds of reserve grade.
He has played a total of 14 reserve grade games - 3 in 2023 and 11 in 2024 - and is still young enough to play Flegg in 2025.
He is a smallish second rower who has great footwork at the line and makes a lot of line breaks and has the vision to know when to pass and set others up.
I don't know if he had an injury or just got worn out as the season went on, but he finished the season in Flegg and wasn't all that impressive towards the end of the season.
Anyway, early in the season he was averaging over 50 fantasy points per game in reserve grade and was one of the leading forwards, but ran out of puff as the season went on.
He played Ball in 2023, so should be turning 21 in 2025 and still Flegg aged.

It’s the biggest and most important off-season the club has had since 2020 I would say. When we decided to stick solid by Mitchell Pearce and missed out on any opportunity to find a replacement over a season in which Tom Dearden, Adam Reynolds, Chad Townsend, Nicho Hynes and Jamal Fogarty all changed clubs. Only for him to turn around and cry about how sad he was that he ruined his life by his own actions and beg for a release, totally leaving us in the lurch.

Assuming the reports that Sam Walker has re-signed are true, the off contract list of players who may well find a new club this November or into next year is of a very comparable quality: Jonah Pezet, Ben Hunt, Toby Sexton, Daniel Atkinson, Braydon Trindall. Excluding DCE and Cody Walker here because they are very unlikely to change clubs.

We should be able to snag someone, but it makes sense to be on edge!

Jack Hillier is another guy who might have a good pre-season.
In 2022 he was clearly our best forward in Mathews and him and Votano were our best two players.
In 2023 in Mathews he had injury issues and Cody Hopwood went past him over the season.
In 2024 he has made most of the same sides as Cody Hopwood - city under 18s, the same schoolboys championships side, but Cody made Aus schoolboys while people say Jack was very unlucky to miss out.
Cody and Jack are very different prop forwards - Cody tall with a big motor - Jack shorter and very solid and harder running - but both very good prospects.
Jack is most notable for being a prop with great vision and a great passing game, as well as being a very solid and hard running. In 2022 he was tearing sides to pieces in Mathews - unstoppable at times.

The Bloke podcast was talking up Cody Hopwood.

With our great history of buying stars on their final lap, I think let's target Ben Hunt, but only after a major injury this season. Here for 2026, and plays 3 games🤣
