2025 pre season thread

Be interested where De Courcey is at with his Elbow injury. They were saying 6+ months and that was pretty late in the season.

Yep this has been the never ending Hastings cycle. Hope for his sake he’s finally figured out how to stop alienating himself from his teammates but going to take more than another performative podcast appearance to believe it.

Going into 2024 I was on the side that he was comfortably our best halfback but I’m sceptical that player still exists, both physically and mentally.

Hastings will have no role in the 17, it's clear his bridges have been burnt, and he will take a top 30 spot and a good chunk of money next year before we part ways. His leg is screwed and that's that.

At this risk of sounding cynical he gave the exact same interview last off season on bloke in a bar. Talked about starting medication and therapy, loving Newcastle, team first, singing everyone’s praises…. Doesn’t seem to be able to reflect his talk in his actions though.

If I dare to dream though. Him doing a job at lock would solves heaps of issues. Frizell and Elliot can come on as props after the big boys have a stint. Then Elliot can do his second stint at lock for the last 20min. Instantly fixes our front row rotation and in theory takes ball playing pressure off our halves.

Hastings would easily be the worst lock in the NRL lol.

Yeah he's not good at lock at NRL level. No leg drive, little core strength. He can't get a quick play the ball, isn't likely to get an arm free for an offload, etc. He's a half.

Clarification on the development/supplemental/training players as announced by the NRL last year:

"Development player contracts replaced by 'Supplementary list'. $650,000 cap for at least four, maximum six players, paid $80,000, can play from Round 1. Bonus of $3,000 for any NRL game.

Training contracts (train and trial). To rise to $1200 in 2024, $3,000 bonus for any NRL game, can only play NRL from Round 11 (ie after Round 10)."

Thompson, Votano & De Courcey have been officially announced as development players by the club, and Toohey said Smith is one as well so that seems like a safe bet. Sounds like Linnane is another one and then I'm assuming Salesa-Leaumoana is the 6th based on his profile being added yesterday at the same time as the other confirmed development players (minus Votano who already had one). McCarthy & Hopwood both have profiles too but they were added last season so not new additions.

So guessing/predicting the non-top 30 players from the first training group:
Development - Wilson De Courcey, Jye Linanne, Elijah Salesa-Leaumoana, Malachi Smith, Tyrone Thompson, Connor Votano
Training - Brock Greacen, Cody Hopwood, Kyle McCarthy, Liam Sutton
Juniors - Logan Aoake, Jack Hilliar, Haami Loza
