2024 Recruitment and Retention Thread - Rebuild 2: This Time It’ll Work For Sure (Unironically)

Doesn't always work out, remember David Fifita sucked whilst Andrew in his prime was among the great props of the game - reminded me of a runaway donkey!

Edit: Not to pick but how much experience does Brailey have? Surely 50 games max, not a big loss for mine. My only comment is we probably should have kept Mann if we let him go.
Brailey has played 108 games.

Is Leo's twin available?
Wouldn't replace D.Saf but would hopefully be a good back up and hopefully eventually get a feel for the game and get as good as his twin.
He’d be years away from being a first grader in the NRL, a lot of rugby to unlearn.

Players/managers can be spoken to anytime but not “officially” offered anything until they’re free agents. Obviously still happens though, usually through a mysterious third party who’s not officially part of the club.

I think if you can get out of Brailey’s deal you do it.
You can also get permission from the club to talk to the player before they’re officially allowed to be negotiated with.

I don’t believe in the Dsaf rumours in the slightest. Not from the Knights side anyway. Gould lost Thompson so probably thinking out loud. First and foremost we have to resign Best and Jsaf. Our forward stock too low to think of letting Dsaf go. He’s only young, and is signed until 25 isn’t he? Needs a big yr next yr.

Brailey I could only accept if we were still able to keep Nu Brown. But I think our team would be better with a fit Brailey. We have barely seen Brailey at his best

Understand cap needs some room by 25. And enough for juniors as well.

Anyway I’m a huge Brailey fan, but yeah if we are under a cap crunch, and there’s a club willing to take on the whole deal, yes it makes sense to let him go and sign Crossland for multiple years, probably for half as much or less. Coaching staff would have to back that he’d improve with a full pre-season training at 9 but I think that’s a reasonable assumption.

Also in the event Will Pryce does pan out to be our answer to Michael Morgan, all of a sudden we’re in a much better position to keep him. As you see with Melbourne atm, there’s a reason most teams only tend to spend big on 3 spine players and find a way to economise on the fourth. The Storm having $4 million locked into their spine leaves them with seriously poor depth elsewhere.

The D Saf thing is codswallop I reckon. AOB would throw a pink fit.

And yeah as much as I love him, if there’s a desperate need to free up cap space, the thing which makes sense is to not rush to extend Dane Gagai. I would have thought this was obvious.

I know our front row stocks are dire. Take everything the journos say with a grain of salt . If it's 600k fair. 880k see you latter. No wonder we got rid of Zammit
880 would be close to his market value. If it’s over it’s not by much. Props get paid heaps.

Tino: $1.2 million
Haas: Just extended for $1.1 million apparently
Addin Fonua-Blake: $1 million+
Tapine, Fisher-Harris: $1 million
Nelson Asofa-Solomona: $850K
Tom Burgess: $800K

When we re-signed Daniel he was at that stage a top 3-5 prop in the game, just shy of $700K-ish with a ratchet clause when the cap increased which brings it to around $880K wouldn’t shock me.

And yeah even if we did move him and pay say $250K freight for the next 3 seasons… okay who’s the better prop we’re replacing him with?

Don’t see any reason for changes, we have a competitive team that should be strong in 2024 & 25, sure we’ve lost Young, almost irreplaceable, and Fitz but have Lucas firing, with Pearce-Paul, Pryce, Cogger and Cartwright arriving.
Could be stronger than 23 especially if we get Hastings and Brailey fit and ready to go at season start, injuries are main worry as we lack depth in some positions.

Agree with you, though I think we need some space in the next yr or two to upgrade likes of Best and Jsaf and also have enough $$ for likes of Sharpe, Votano etc to keep them at club.

I just hope every recruitment decision we're doing behind the scenes right now is about getting better next year. Most of the time it seems we're sacrificing something for next year so we're better off the year after. Now that we've finally had a bit of success this year, we need to double down on that. Premiership windows are a hard thing to come by.

It’s been talked about on another thread. All depending on the progression and form of our second rowers we need to seriously consider moving Friz into front row. That will sort out our front row depth.
