2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

That says more about the current options than anything, he's had a spectacularly ordinary career on the edge
I reckon Elliott was better than given credit for at Canterbury, it's very hard to play well on an edge alongside a pathetic middle, but yeah he was a bit of a revelation at lock for Canberra. I think he’s good on an edge but really good at lock.

If the Nathan Brown thing is a thing, between him, Elliott, taking Hastings over Brooks, replacing Cliff with Gamble, and the pursuit of Garrick, when you look at some of the players we've moved on - Momoisea, Saulo, Clifford - that's a pretty quick hard reset away from "get AOB guys with the raw physical tools and back him to coach them up", towards "get hard-headed footy players who give us our best chance of respectability in the short term - physical tools are consideration #2". Even Hetherington & Marzhew, the two punts on upside, are guys with experience who've at least demonstrated that they play really hard.

The problem is that the good teams have rosters which beat us for *both* athleticism and footy smarts. I think we've positioned ourselves to be a mid-table side again, but yeah we still need guys like KPP, Keeley/Martin, Pryce/Hodgson, Leo/Simi, Bradman/Krystian to really come along over the next couple of years & force some of the names above to the bench if we want to do any better.

Cronulla have caved and will release Miller. Will be announced soon, very possibly this week. You all have to call me Harvstradamus if I’m right.
I will call you sir, darling, anything you like if you are right. Miller is raw and still learning the game but has a ton of natural ability, and that undeniable rugby 7s fitness base. I think he could be a gun.
I would give him a shot at no.1 straight up next year, Ponga to 6, Hastings 7 and Brailey at 9, and that is a vastly better spine than this year already.
I still think we need another quality backrower to fill a spot , and we should be cooking with gas come round 1 .

With the confirmation of Pyrce signing.. we are flushed with fullback options for 2024. I wonder how Miller fits into of all of this? I doubt he would sign for just 1 season?

It's a good way to build depth, bring in multiple options and figure it all out later. These things do figure themselves out over the course of a year with form, injuries, unforeseen circumstances etc. Would much rather that situation than what we have currently, which is still no signing and the prospect of having to move someone to a new position, or use a rookie.

I do hope we get Miller, just so we have someone to go into the year with, but given he's 28, his background is in rugby sevens with only 7 NRL games and is smaller in stature, I don't see him being the long term guy. I'd think going past 2023, he would become mostly a guy that can fill in at wing and fullback whenever we need him.

I am very slowly healing my Knights trauma.

KPP and Pyrce confirmed.

The club feigning limited cap space. I'm now willing to believe that they're planning towards 2024 where talent fulfills a growing and balanced roster, and due to forward planning, they have the cap space to resign either one of or both of these English young talents, assuming they make something significant of themselves.

I can wear this theory. Despite that it's totally made up. I'll buy into that

It’s actually a good move for the Roosters, as usual. They had very little depth in their 2-5, Drew Hutchison and Angus Crichton have had to fill in at centre for them. Very good chance Jaxson Paulo, who is dog****, would have played almost every week for them if they didn’t get Allan.
