2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

Vehemently disagree on your bagging’s of Hastings was strong for Tigers last year and has Pearces never quit attitude we’ve been missing.

Not even Hastings mum is choosing him over Williams on the same money.

Moot point if it's true Hastings is on 500k though, because three or four NRL clubs will offer Williams a lot more money than that.

If we were serious he'd already be here. The club has had concrete plans for months to see Klemmer out the door this year, surely this requires planning for a replacement, or supplementary middle forward stocks.

We're one prop injury away from a serious problem with our middle forwards. It's not like we've got middles for days and this isn't crucial to our season. And yet, the club seems to have made its one signing for the off season

Far out man it’s mid November! You think they are just sitting in there ands doing Jack ****?

Dead set the negativity towards the club is becoming stupid! It’s already been mentioned by Parr that they are looking for another forward and backline player. Miller already in the works, KPP and Pryce signed for 24. Maybe KPP 23.

There is plenty of time to secure a good FRF before the new year let alone season start.

Fans dead set expect news about knights signings every second day and are disappointed when we aren’t in every rumour.

I think we saw last season totally derailed by the failure to replace Pearce or the injured Brailey, so we don’t have much faith in them now. Plus baffling decisions like letting Hoy go when Ponga was moving to the halves, and resigning Mann and Crossland for years when nobody else wants them.

We have pretty good reason to be skeptical about our recruitment … there hasn’t been much/any planning in recent seasons.

Pearce left them in a whole. With short notice, but agree more that they should have been planning better for that in the next yr or two. Clifford was apart of that plan but sadly he mentally lost it for a long while there.

Tex Hoy for me was a good quality NSW cup player and that’s it. He had a couple good moments, but he was never long term to me. There’s better back up options out there and if they develop Sharpe and Hodgson right we’ll covered well there

Mann and Crossland are good depth on zero $$.

The club hasn’t had stand out talent come through the system in a while, so there behind the 8-ball there with replacements cause they weren’t up to standard, they got found out with that last year. So, so many players left the club and fans down last season. Worst results driven season in a while.

But they’ve been active in trying to find talent to bulk the top 30 whilst also developing the current Flegg team. They’ve actively moved some big players this year, to actively replace, however clubs seem to be very stingy this year with letting players go, even if the player request to do so (Brookes, Miller, KPP)

I’ve gone long winded but I have more faith in the clubs ability to improve on last year, not only in Hastings and potentially Miller, let alone acquiring KPP & Pry e eventually, but also McDermott. I’m also buoyed by the SG/Flegg talent, but they need to be able to keep developing them well. Likes of Keeley and Bradbury, Bryan could have consistent 1st grade time by years end. Just need another experience prop to rotate with twins and Hetherington.

Wow. I really vented there. Either all. Bit more positivity be nice in threads. Pretty boring otherwise.

The Tigers replace their entire forward pack within the space of a month or so. There's absolutely nothing stopping us from being as aggressive until we have the right troops. I'm not saying we should overhaul our squad every off season, tho it seems clear to me that we aren't nearly proactive enough when it comes to improving the squad.

Case in point: If the Roosters had Our 1-17, how many signings do we think they'd have made this off season? At the very least they'd already have another marquee middle and edge forward, probably someone who could play both to a rep standard. They'd also be doing everything feasible to bring both Pryce and KPP here immediately. Waiting another year for Pryce is just setting the club back 12 months, because if he isn't in our plans this year then we should be in the market for a marquee fullback. But no, instead this club chooses to put on hold any intent to be as competitive as we could be.

Well already been stated knights want Pryce and are willing to pay the transfer fee. But Wigan don’t want to lose him this year apprently. Yeah roosters have a **** ton more sway. Knights have a long long way to go to earn that type of respect.

Agree it’s frustrating we can’t just get them, equally as much as tigers and sharks holding us off respective players. Feels like a solid “F you Knights, your nothing to us”.

Club has put themselves in this position, but I feel with the likes of McDermott, Parr it’s a start to improve that image.

OK we need a prop but is this bloke any better than Saulo who is younger? and as experienced and a local? And we let him go.
Annoys me the turn over for no obvious improvement

Yeah he is better than Saulo. Good bench prop who’s proven he’s capable of stepping up as a starter when needed & doing a job. This is the exact hole we need filled (hurr hurr hurr) at the moment.

He didn’t get a game in first grade for Easts because their forward depth is really good and most of their injury issues this year were in the backline, but for a club like us where it’s a position of need, he’d be in the 17 every week.

Apparently this was in the Tele & is being reinforced by heaps of people on the Wests forums. Daine Laurie wants out at Wests.

Had a bad year after impressing in his first season there, but definitely a better option than Niu, Allan or Miller in my opinion. Exactly good enough to be a starting fullback in the NRL, wouldn’t cost that much, so wouldn’t prevent us from chasing other players or from replacing him with Hodgson/Pryce if they kick on.

And lets look at the Tigers pay overs for these players who won't bring the results. David Klemmer is 29 this year and signed a 3 year deal with a 4th year option (32 or 33 years old when finishing) that will be way past his use by date and god knows how much he'd be on but you wouldn't imagine its cheap.
Papali'i has had 2 good season in the nrl out of 6 behind an impressive pack and better squad than what Tigers can offer so who knows how that will go and had to pay 600k+ for him.
Api would be on great coin now being a consistent premiership winner which is warranted.
Staines was on 500k a season at penrith and I doubt they are silly enough to be paying much of his contract (and he's rubbish).

Not to mention players they already have on the books: Nofa (500k+) Doueihi (550k+) and wants an extension for 800k, and Brooks 1.1m.

I don't think you should be comparing our recruitment to tigers, not until we see results and for it to help in the long run. Our recruitment under Bennett was aggressive looking for immediate results (much like Tigers IMO) and that was the start of ultimately the ****ing downward spiral of our great club.

Papali’i is a great signing for anyone IMO but other than that yeah, they’re trying to do a very fast retool and a lot of their moves hinge on Mitchell Moses coming back to them. I have a sneaking suspicion Doueihi pisses off to Canterbury, Moses stays at Parra, and Wests are left holding their ****s with Brooks and then whoever they can scramble to get beyond him for their halves.

Staines was a player swap for Tyrone Peachey, I’m pretty sure you’re correct and Panthers aren’t doing them any favours on his salary.

What’s funny is Penrith have made some blunders too, $700K Crichton $500K Staines are both overs, good thing their juniors production line will keep churning out cheap guns for them.

We can stamp our feet and hold our breath like little kids all we want, kpp and pryce are still under contract at their current clubs. Of course the Knights are negotiating to get them early but the ball is not in our court.

It’ll be very interesting to see how the tigers go. They’ve spent a lot to improve there squad. Be interesting if the API’s and Papalii’s keep motivated if it starts going down hill, considering they’ve openly made jokes about the club.

For the fans I hope they go well. They’ve suffered about as long as us.

Love to see both teams make the 8 for many years to come.

I'm happy with the direction we are going.
Most of our buys are guys who try really hard, even if they aren't world beaters.
We have a lot of kids coming through who have had a lot of success and have self confidence.

My feeling is that Wests have decided to never pay overs, and big names don't come to Newcastle unless it's for much more than they are worth, so basically, we have to look for under rated players or breed our own, which is the only way we've ever won a premiership in the past and the only way we'll win one in the future.
