2020 Pre Season and Trial Games

just reading a review of our trial that said Tex Hoy moved from fullback to 5/8.
I thought he was playing centre, and I have no idea what positions Lino and Searle were playing if Hoy was at 5/8, but if it is true that Hoy did a turn at 5/8, it adds another factor to the who plays at 5/8 debate.

I have a feeling that Hoy will be our 5/8th by the end of the year, or at least next year. Hope he kills it in Cup until then and pushes for a spot.

I noticed we had Luke Sharpe at fullback in the reserve grade trial and Matt Cooper at centre.
Toohey said Sharpe was asked to trial by O'Brien, who must have seen him at Roosters last pre season.
Luke Sharpe is a tiny little guy who was one of the main reasons Wyong made the reserve grade grandfinal when they were feeder club for the Roosters. He tore us to pieces a few times.
Jockey sized fullback who can slip through a 6 inch gap in a defensive line and run 100 metres to score.

If we have Luke Sharpe and Matt Cooper fighting for fullback in reserves, Hoy could play 5/8 and see if he can get his kicking game back up to speed, having not really used it since under 18s.

Think there’s more chance of Searle being 5/8. I don’t think Hoy did his chances much good in that trial. He was safe enough but attack wise he has work to do. Just too many average options at the moment

Just been announced that Don Furner, David Furner's father, has died.
That might take him away from the team for a while, but most of his work will have been done already.

Bit of footage of Luke Sharpe.
I couldn't find his 2018 highlights for Wyong in the NSW cup, which would be more impressive than that. He was a constant threat in 2018.
That is some serious talent on show. The try he set up at 1.40 after beating, stepping and burning off half the opposition team was pretty impressive... and he seems to have some strength for a smaller player to break out of tackles once he is stepping through the line - how old is he Billy?

23 or 24.
I think he would be related to the Sharpe brothers from Wyong we had in the juniors years ago - maybe a younger brother or cousin or something.
When Wyong made the grandfinal in NSW cup in 2018 I remember him being absolutely deadly against us, but he is a tiny little guy. He looks smaller in real life.

Interestingly, the demonstration RL team that took part in the Gold Coast commonwealth games in 2018 included exciting young talents Luke Sharpe and Luke Huth.

Was my first thoughts too. Still two weeks till the season begins and I don't doubt his old man would have wanted his son to get on with his footy work.

Article that says Daniel Saifiti thinks he let Klem do too much work last year and plans to push Klem out of the way if he has to this year.

In the trial game DSaf played 25 or 30 minutes against the full strength Saints side and ran 10 times for 114 metres, 79 metres post contact, and made 17 tackles with 0 missed.
If it were a normal game and he went back on for another spell, he was ontrack for a 200 metre, 35 tackle game.
Klem only did 20 minutes for 8 runs, 106 metres, 60 post contact and 12 tackles - so not much different in terms of workrate for time on the field.

I hope the 2 of them have a real battle to see who is top dog this year.

I'm glad Toa is being given another chance. He looked a bit lost in the Saints trial, but he was surrounded by guys who looked even more at sea.
