NRL All Stars forward Gallen was placed on report for a high tackle on Indigenous All Stars backrower Kyle Turner in just the fourth minute of Friday night's clash.

It was not a good look in the Test forward's first game back since serving a backdated ban over Cronulla's supplements scandal.

However, an NRL statement on Saturday advised there would be no charges laid from the match, leaving Gallen free to face Wests Tigers at Campbelltown Sports Stadium next Saturday.

NRL appoints new judiciary chairman

Wed 04 Mar, 2015, 11:35am

Supreme Court Judge, the Honourable Justice Geoff Bellew has accepted an invitation from the NRL to become Chairman of the NRL Judiciary.

Head of Football, Todd Greenberg said it was a coup for the game to secure the services of Justice Bellew who is not only a prominent legal figure but has extensive experience in Rugby League.

Justice Bellew represented players at the Judiciary from almost every club over more than 20 years before his appointment as a Judge of the Supreme Court.

These included some of the game’s biggest names including Johnathan Thurston, Wally Lewis, Jarryd Hayne, Billy Slater and Andrew Johns.

Mr Greenberg said Justice Bellew came from a family steeped in Rugby League history.

His father, Tom, OAM, was a former NSWRL Chairman and ARL Director. Justice Bellew is a former NRL Board Member and former Chairman of the Manly and Northern Eagles clubs.

“In other words, there could be no one more qualified and suitable for the role of Judiciary Chairman,” Mr Greenberg said.

“Justice Bellew has a unique set of skills and experience.

“He understands the rules and Judiciary Code of Procedure intimately and has a great affection for Rugby League.”

Mr Greenberg said Justice Bellew’s role would be to uphold the rules of the game and give the Judiciary panel appropriate directions.

“While Justice Bellew will not take a public role, he will bring significant expertise and experience to the Judiciary this season,” he said.

Brisbane Broncos prop James Gavet cops three-week ban for shoulder charge

THE Broncos have copped more bad news from the opening round thumping by South Sydney with prop James Gavet suspended for three weeks.

Gavet was charged with a grade-two shoulder charge by the NRL judiciary following Thursday’s clash with the Rabbitohs.

He took the early guilty plea on Friday afternoon, meaning he receives a three-week ban instead of a potential four-week suspension if he contested the charge and lost.

Gavet was hit by the judiciary for a shoulder charge on Isaac Luke in the final minute of the Broncos’ 36-6 loss to the Rabbitohs.

Rabbitohs lock Ben Lowe was also charged with a ‘crusher’ tackle on Sam Thaiday but will get off with just 75 points with an early guilty plea.

Parramatta's Paulo facing nine week ban

Mon 09 Mar, 2015, 2:39pm

By Matt Encarnacion, Western Sydney Correspondent, NRL.com

Nine players were charged over the first seven games of the season-opening weekend by the NRL Match Review Committee, the heaviest of which is a Grade 3 Dangerous Throw charge on Eels forward Junior Paulo for his 29th minute tackle on Matt Ballin that could sideline him for up to nine weeks.

A similar offence in the past two years as well as 72 carryover points exacerbated the penalty, which means Paulo would miss seven matches even with an early guilty plea .

Brisbane prop James Gavet compounded his disappointing night in his first match in Broncos colours with what could be a costly 80th minute Grade 2 Shoulder Charge on Issac Luke in the first game of the year.

An early guilty plea will give him a three-week ban or he could face four weeks if he fights the charge at the NRL judiciary and loses.

Manly forward James Hasson could be outed for three games should he be found guilty of a Grade 2 Dangerous Contact charge on former teammate Anthony Watmough early in the second half of last Friday night's clash.

Even if he takes the early guilty plea, his 88 carryover points means he'll still miss three matches.

The other major charge out of the weekend is Bulldogs five-eighth Josh Reynolds, who was hit with a Grade 1 Dangerous Throw on Penrith fullback Matt Moylan in the 38th minute of their loss to the Panthers last Sunday.

A similar offence in the past two years, together with three more non-similar charges and 51 carryover points, will force the NSW representative to miss two matches with an early guilty plea. He risks an extra week if he fights the charge and loses.

South Sydney's Ben Lowe (Dangerous Contact – Head/Neck), Newcastle's Siona Mata'utia (Dangerous Throw), Wests Tigers' Mitchell Moses (High Tackle – Careless), North Queensland's Johnathan Thurston (Tripping), and Canberra's Jack Wighton (Striking) will all escape bans with early guilty pleas.

The players will have until Midday on Tuesday to enter their pleas.

Junior Paulo out for nine weeks

Wed 11 Mar, 2015, 7:30pm

By Matt Encarnacion, Western Sydney Correspondent, NRL.com

Nine players were charged over the first seven games of the season-opening weekend by the NRL Match Review Committee, the heaviest of which is a Grade 3 Dangerous Throw charge on Eels forward Junior Paulo for his 29th minute tackle on Matt Ballin that will see him miss nine weeks.

Paulo was unsuccessful in having his charge downgraded at the NRL judiciary on Wednesday night after the club elected to challenge the grading, meaning he will miss nine games for Parramatta.

Melbourne's Jesse Bromwich (Grade 1 Careless High Tackle) has entered an early plea and is free to play this weekend. However Round 1 Storm debutant Felise Kaufusi (Grade 2 Dangerous Contact) will miss one game after taking the early plea for his ugly challenge on Dragons playmaker Benji Marshall.

Brisbane prop James Gavet compounded his disappointing night in his first match in Broncos colours with a costly 80th minute Grade 2 Shoulder Charge on Issac Luke in the first game of the year. Gavet has taken an early guilty plea and a three-week ban.

Match Review Coordinator Michael Buettner said there were three key components that made Gavet's shoulder charge a Grade 2.

"His upper arm was tucked into his side, the force was considered low to moderate and he made direct contact with his shoudler to the head of Issac Luke," Buettner said.

The other major charge out of the weekend is Bulldogs five-eighth Josh Reynolds, who was hit with a Grade 1 Dangerous Throw on Penrith fullback Matt Moylan in the 38th minute of their loss to the Panthers on Sunday, although he is set to miss 6-8 weeks due to a fractured arm anyway.

Reynolds was not charged for what looked like a trip on Panthers hooker James Segeyaro.

"We did see the leg come out but felt that the arm was simultanous in terms of trying to make the tackle," Buettner said.

South Sydney's Ben Lowe (Dangerous Contact – Head/Neck), Newcastle's Siona Mata'utia (Dangerous Throw), Wests Tigers' Mitchell Moses (High Tackle – Careless), North Queensland's Johnathan Thurston (Tripping), and Canberra's Jack Wighton (Striking) all escaped bans with early guilty pleas.

Jeez this game is getting to be sh$t, grubby acts get over looked, even a wild high shot from Moses goes unpunished but a good old fashion jersey sling from Paulo gets 9 weeks. This rubbish that is offered now is the exact reason that I've gone from watching every game of every round to getting rid of foxtel & watching 1 or 2 games a week. I just don't enjoy it as much anymore

9 weeks seems like a long time for something that was unintentional but did you see the way Ballin's head landed? Could have ended much, much worse, definitely shouldn't be overlooked, it was careless. Moses' hit was clearly unintentional, Zillman stepped him & he continued to try & grab him, no swinging arm or anything.

99 % of the time its unintentional. It's just a tackle that doesn't quite work out. Gavet getting 3 weeks is ridiculous. I just don't know how they formulate it all. I mean Moses imo worth a week as it was careless, then you have gavet who caused minimal contact and is out for 3? Fair enough if he sprinted out of the line.

Moses' hit had potential to be a lot worse also. There's no consistency with the judiciary. Either play a hard game like it was or water it right down, at least give some consistency so we know what we're getting

If course it's consistent. Most big names get off, snowden and old Luke odonnel get 3x what they deserve, everyone else is in the middle somewhere

Finucane, Hawkins face one-week bans

Mon 16 Mar, 2015, 3:58pm

By Chris Kennedy, National Correspondent, NRL.com

Seven players have been charged by the match review committee after the first seven games of Round 2, but only Storm forward
Dale Finucane and Raiders winger Jeremy Hawkins are looking at a game on the sidelines.

Both players have loading from prior non-similar offences for their Grade 1 Dangerous Contact (Finucane) and Grade 1 Dangerous
Throw (Hawkins) charges, meaning they will still miss a game each each with an early plea.

Newcastle forward Beau Scott gave Cowboys halfback Johnathan Thurston a torrid time up in Townsville, but can escape suspension with an early plea to his Grade 1 dangerous contact (head/neck) charge.

Cronulla's Michael Ennis (contrary conduct - Contact with Match Official), Manly's Tom Symonds (Dangerous Contact - Head/Neck), and Canberra pair Jarrad Kennedy (Dangerous Throw) and Luke Bateman (Dangerous Contact – Other) can all escape suspension for their Grade 1 charges with early pleas.

Finucane clear to face Sharks

Wed 18 Mar, 2015, 8:06pm

Melbourne forward Dale Finucane has beaten a grade one dangerous contact charge at the NRL judiciary on Wednesday night.

Finucane is now free to play in the Storm's round three encounter against winless Cronulla in Melbourne on Saturday night.

The former Canterbury back-rower was charged over a tackle on Manly's Peta Hiku in the Storm's loss to the Sea Eagles at Brookvale Oval on Saturday.

Finucane would have been hit with a one-match ban if he was found guilty of the offence.

Canberra's Jeremy Hawkins is the only player suspended due to a charge from last weekend's round two action.

Hawkins will miss the Raiders' clash with St George Illawarra in the nation's capital on Saturday.

The Raiders' rookie outside back was hit with a one-match ban for a grade one dangerous throw on Warriors winger Manu Vatuvei in the Raiders' loss on Sunday.

Pat Richards facing two weeks, Ben Barba facing three weeks on the sideline

  • THE DAILY TELEGRAPH
  • MARCH 23, 2015 4:45PM

STRUGGLING Sharks playmaker Ben Barba is facing three weeks on the sideline after he was charged with two separate offences during his side’s loss to the Storm.

Tigers’ Pat Richards could miss two weeks after he was cited for tipping star fullback Greg Inglis on his head during Sunday’s clash.

Barba was on Monday charged by the NRL match review committee with a dangerous throw on Melbourne’s Kurt Mann and then was cited for dangerous contact against Marika Koroibete.

An early guilty plea on each charge will see him miss two weeks in total but if he challenges and loses the Cronulla pivot will be rubbed out for three weeks.

Richards was hit with a grade two dangerous contact head/neck charge for his tackle on Inglis during the Tigers loss to the Rabbitohs on Sunday.

The winger will miss one week with an early guilty plea but faces two weeks out if he challenges and loses at the judiciary.

The Raiders will be without workhorse Shaun Fensom who will be sidelined for a week if he takes an early guilty plea for his tackle on Euan Aitken against the Dragons.

The other charges from the weekend include:

* An early plea will see Dragons backrower Joel Thompson escape suspension for a dangerous tackle on Canberra’s Jarrad Kennedy.

* Glenn Stewart won’t miss any game time for his dangerous throw on Kieth Galloway.

* Titans forward Eddy Pettybourne was charged with a careless high tackle on Korbin Sims but will escape suspension with an early plea.
