Newcastle Knights: Former coach Rick Stone homes in on Wayne Bennett’s old role
FORMER coach Rick Stone is at short odds to replace Wayne Bennett at Newcastle next season despite failing to win a personal recommendation from the eight times premiership-winning coach.
The Knights coaching position is expected to be highly sought after with CEO Matt Gidley revealing he had already been contacted by the managers of at least two coaches expressing an interest.
Stone’s name is at the top of a group of potential contenders that includes former Cowboys coach Neil Henry, unsigned Wests Tigers coach Mick Potter, Penrith lower grade coaches Garth Brennan and Trent Barrett, Canberra assistant Matt Parish and Cowboys assistant Terry Matterson.
Stone’s advantage is he was in the role for 54 NRL games before stepping aside to act as an assistant when former owner Nathan Tinkler brought Bennett in and he is viewed as a local with the ability to reconnect the club to the community.
But if he does snare the job, it won’t be because of Bennett’s influence.
While the master coach recommended both his assistants, Anthony Griffin and Steve Price, get the top jobs at Brisbane and St George Illawarra after he departed, there was no such endorsement for Stone, with the pair not enjoying the closest of relationships over the past three years.
Asked who should succeed him in 2015 when he announced his decision to quit on Thursday, Bennett said:
“I’ve got no idea at the moment. It’s not up to me.”
When Stone’s name was brought up, Bennett said:
“Look, that’s to be decided, Could be a whole number of people may want the job, I don’t know.”
Stone said on Friday night he had a good relationship with Bennett and the lack of a recommendation did not worry him.
“Wayne’s got his own opinion on what should happen and he’s entitled to that,” Stone said.
“That’s his prerogative but I’m not sure what role he will have in what happens next year.
“Obviously, I’d love to get the job again and I’ve made no secret of that.
"I’ve had some success in the past and hopefully, my patience and loyalty to the club is rewarded.”

There seems to be alot of tension within the club now.
Comments from Bennett, Stone, Jeremy Smith, Mullen in the last day alone hints the players are unhappy with Bennett and want changes made.
Planning for 2015 must begin now, Bennett needs to go and let our new coach get a jump start with the playing group and get the ones who want to be Newcastle Knights on side, excited and committed for next year.
Hopefully Crawley can at least keep the NYC boys going until the end of the year but he will need replacing you'd imagine too. Though he's a local I think so he may end up staying. Bedsy would jump straight into an assistant role for the remainder of the year.
Really torn between Stone and Brennan.
Stone you know loves the club, he's as loyal as you get, has the players respect and deep knowledge of all our lower grade players and juniors, he's had decent results but I'm still not sure if he's got what it takes to turn the club into serious contenders. There seems to be a feeling though that he deserves first crack.
Brennan from all reports has those unknown but highly regarded potential as a first grade coach with more modern ideas and game plans, he also loves the club and town and alot of the players already know him. It's his inexperience though which is the concern.

Slightly preferring Brennan right now, but I could go either way really. Both have their ups and downs, like you said.

A great outcome would be Stone as head coach and Brennan as assistant coach and NSW cup coach.
That would give us all the benefits of everything Stone has learnt from Bennett and everything Brennan has learnt from his time at Penrith.
As for the other positions, the most outstanding thing Stone did as a coach last time was get a coaching team together, as shown by all his assistants going on to do wonderful things since. I have no doubt Stone knows who the good young coaching talents are.

Doesn't surprise me, I always suspected this was the case ... and a reason Stone was sent down to NSW Cup coaching after initially being a dedicated assistant (along with other factors no doubt, like cost cutting). When Bennett came in and started continuously slagging off where the side was at it didn't seem like the relationship between him and Stone could be a very close one.
It said in the Newcastle Herald today that Brennan still lives in Newcastle, so surely he would consider a move back to the Knights as assistant.

Bennett and Stone are very different coaches.
Bennett is the very definition of old school, and Stone tries to be at the cutting edge of modern sports medicine and science.
It will be interesting to see what Stone has learnt from Bennett, who uses new methods, but also uses all the tried and true methods that have worked for him for decades.

I wonder how open Brennan would be to the assistant role? Honestly, it seems as though itd be the best outcome from this whole situation given the two both want the job and are fond of the town.

Yeah it's pretty annoying knowing we have to watch Bennett coach the team for another 9 weeks now that it's known he won't be here next year, more than likely we will play the same style too & just finish the year off conservatively. We really just need to kick him now.
