2013 NRL Player Rumours & Signings

Personally, i reckon signing people from other clubs is stupid. What ever happened to the good old days where the city's team actually had players who were home bred through the juniors. I mean look at it now, we've got queenslanders, fijians. Go back 7-10 years ago when johns and matt gidley and robbie o'davis and B.K still played for us. Now half our team is taken by imports when we have got so much young talent coming through the ranks.

Kennedy wasn't from Newcastle either, he started with Canberra. I dunno what WK is on about there ...

He wants Fijians out of the Knights? Sounds a bit racist, tbh.

More than half of the team are locals or have played juniors for the Knights. I actually counted and it is around 14 out of 19 players named this round. Your post sounds racist and is completely invalid.

I can't see how his post was racist but I agree it was a silly post that didnt make much sense.

The Knights are one of few clubs who actually have a high number of local boys playing, you'll never see a team now run out with 16-17 locals. There's nothing wrong with having imports as long as they're quality and can add something special to the team. I'd just hate to be the Bulldogs where 99% of their team are imports. Yuck!

Well it's very hard to get a good juniors system because their reach is far, but what they do have they don't have a lot of talent sources. They have Canterbury, Bankstown and that general area (Haberfield, Croydon, Belmore), and they have to compete with Parra, Penrith, Sydney, Cronulla, Manly as well as Sydney FC, GWS and the Swans.

So it's better off for the Dogs to look for talent elsewhere where there isn't as much concentrated competition, rather than fight for the crumbs of Sydney.

It wasn't long ago they were producing dozens of some of the best footballers in the game. What's changed from those days?

In other news, Sandor Earl has signed with the Raiders effective immediately. I thought they had no cap space since they couldn't take Wes or Sau.

1st. I never said i wanted fijians out of the club, if they were born or grew up here and came through the ranks then im fine with it. And it wasn't racist.
2nd. I thought there was more people that we imported, but obviously not. Sorry if i upset anyone. I was just saying that bennett should look into getting from our juniors instead of other clubs.

And junior11 thats what i was getting at, teams like bulldogs have too many imports, i dont want us to end up like that, but look at the people who didnt come from newy, cuthbertson, wes and kevin naiqama, mckinnon, boyd, costigan and now, gagai and next season beau scott

Yeah exactly, I don't know how anyone took that as being racist lol

And I agree, I don't want us to become the next Bulldogs but I know we won't be. We have probably the best junior development system in the comp and an endless amount of talented hunter boys, it'll take time to bring them all into first grade so for now I'm happy to see us import some great players who can help build us into a powrhouse team and then bring in our local boys when they're ready. Just gotta be patient.

Not wanting Fijians in the team was the bit I was referring to.

The days where a side is made up predominantly of local juniors are drawing to a close ... if they ever existed to the extent that a whole side was made from local players. We've always had imports, whether they be Hagan, Sargent, Kemp, Schuster, O'Davis, Kennedy, Fairleigh, Parsons, etc ... ironically WK mentions two of them in his post.

I personally reckon you are dreaming if you think we are ever going to have a side like the 1997 one again, where the majority were local born and bred, and we won the comp. Although we do have better financial resources now, we are never going to be able to keep all our quality juniors (eg. Mann a few weeks ago leaving to Melbourne) and even if we do, there will be areas we need to shore up through quality recruiting (for example, even Brisbane had to import Wallace because there wasn't a local half at the time)..

If not, the club will get left behind. It's just the nature of the beast these days.

Personally, I'd rather see a quality Knights side, with clear pathways for local players to make the cut if they're good enough. But if they're a quality player in the red and blue, then I'm behind them no matter where they are from.

WK, would you prefer Boyd or Mata'utia as our starting fullback?

Cory Paterson has signed a two-year deal with Hull KR from next season.

I guess it was a silly statement, if you put it that way like us importing players then yeah, that works too. Sorry guys. :p
