TOMMY Raudonkis wants to know why no one from the NRL has marked August 2 on the calendar. "You're telling me that Friday is International Beer Day?" the NSW Origin legend spits.

" International ... Beer ... Day ? Wow. Wow. As soon as we're done here on the phone I'm going to ring Singo."

One of the greatest rogues to ever lace a boat, Raudonikis is also a walk up starter for the Rugby League Drinking Team Of The Century - as soon as CEO Dave Smith finds a gap between ASADA investigations, salary cap summits and scheduling debacles to name it.

And so today, with that holiest of celebrations upon us, let's give time to reflect on some magnificent careers.

How Penrith Panthers cashed in on exit of star player Michael Jennings

AT his lowest ebb, Isaac John tried to sleep the days away.

He would draw the curtains on his tiny Wakefield apartment and, with snow falling outside, look to shave three, maybe four hours from the reality of an ailing league career. Of increasing depression.Of a footy dream which, inside, this schoolboy prodigy knew was already dead.

"My problems, yeah, they'd taken over everything," John recalls softly. "I'd fallen out with the coach, wasn't getting a run; most afternoons the sun had set by four o'clock and I'd just be home by myself, sitting in the dark."Even this Christmas just gone, I tried to sleep through it.

"Then Christmas Day rolled into New Year and, yeah, rock bottom. I was actually making plans to walk out on my contract, to go back to New Zealand, find a job, settle down . . . and then Michael Jennings left Penrith."

Yep, welcome to Ground Zero.To that day way back in January day when, with Panthers supremo Phil Gould being grilled for releasing a $600,000 NSW Origin star, his coaching staff were already taking the first quiet steps towards spending it.

See, while much of the ongoing debate out west surrounds Gould's infamous Five Year Plan, the real story is the players behind it. Or more specifically, the five youngsters who, secured with Jennings' cash, are now accepting the greatest challenge since Royce Simmons vowed to have a beer with everyone in Penrith.

It all went stale for Neil Henry and his North Queensland Cowboys, writes Matty Johns

MATTY Johns reflects on the up and down career of sacked North Queensland coach Neil Henry.

"All I know about football is that one day I will be sacked ... "
- Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho.

"There are two types of football coaches, them that's fired, and them that's gonna be fired ... " - Legendary NFL coach Bum Phillips.

''For a coach, there is winning and there is misery." NFL coach Bill Parcells.

It was the night of the third State of Origin, I was at the ANZ Stadium media centre before the match when a friend approached me and told me the news that Neil Henry would not see out his contract and would be replaced as North Queensland coach at season's end.

It wasn't earth-shattering news, Henry was under pressure.

At half-time the media jostled for muffins and cake, a fellow ex-player approached me and basically confirmed the news, adding he believed Henry was going to be told that day.

The next morning on the Triple M Grill team I stated that: "The strong mail out of ANZ Stadium last night was that Cowboys coach Neil Henry would be replaced at season's end, and it was believed that he was told yesterday."

That night, I was having dinner when a call came through to my phone. I didn't recognise the number.

"Hello."

The person on the other end sounded agitated: "Yeah, who's this?"

I replied: "You called me pal, who's this?"

"It's Neil Henry ... "

You get these types of calls occasionally; time to slip on the hard hat.

Neil was ****ed off and told me that what I said on Triple M was crap and if I wanted the real story I should have asked him.

So I asked him: "Neil, have you been told you're going to be sacked at the end of the year?" Now he was really ****ed off ...

He explained he had not, and had received nothing but support from the board, and although he was under pressure, had no reason to believe he wouldn't be in charge next year.

I apologised ... my bad call.

Fifteen minutes later I was driving into Fox Sports and thinking about my conversation with Neil. I pulled over and called him back.

"Listen Neil, those two blokes who told me you won't be coaching your team next year aren't mugs, I trust them 100 per cent. If I was you, I'd be calling your chairman and asking him if he's being totally upfront and honest with you."

This time our conversation was very different. Neil conceded he'd heard the whispers about Trent Barrett and Brad Arthur.

Health scare for Penrith Panthers halves coach Trent Barrett who blacks out at training

Penrith have suffered a scare ahead of tonight's clash against the Roosters, with halves coach Trent Barrett taken to hospital after "blacking-out" at training.

The incident occurred at Centrebet Stadium yesterday morning.Barrett was taken to a Western Sydney hospital for observation and tests, before being discharged later in the afternoon.

The former NSW Origin star's manager, Wayne Beavis, said that while Barrett was in good health this morning he will not attend tonight's match.

"I've been to see Trent at home today and he's fine," Beavis said."He just had a turn and blacked-out. It happens."The hospital did all the appropriate tests and deemed him OK to go home a few hours later."

Gold Coast Titans enforcer Dave Taylor challenged to stand up as his lofty price tag is revealed

STRUGGLING Titans forward Dave Taylor has been challenged to stand and deliver his team a finals berth as it emerged the "Coaltrain" is costing the Gold Coast nearly $500 a minute.

Taylor is set to activate a contractual clause that will keep him at the Titans for another three years but his debut season has been far from impressive.

The Titans are on a four-match losing streak with Saturday's Skilled Park encounter against second-last Wests Tigers a must-win clash to keep their finals dreams alive.

And with forwards Greg Bird (ankle), Nate Myles (groin) and Ryan James (groin) facing fitness tests this morning, Taylor must step up and deliver.

He has played 744 minutes in Titans colours this year but has failed to live up to his $350,000-a-season price tag with his statistics being far down on his last season at the Rabbitohs.

The 25-year-old has made just one linebreak in 2013 compared to 14 last year, and broken only 20 tackles after breaking 88 in 2012. He hasn't scored a try since round one.

His poor form has seen coach John Cartwright opt for the reliable Ben Ridge in the starting side with Taylor only earning five starts from 14 games.

Blake Ferguson left out of Canberra Raiders side for clash against Melbourne Storm

  • MELISSA WOODS

  • AUGUST 03, 2013 2:35PM

DEFENDING champions Melbourne can breathe a sigh of relief with game-breaking Blake Ferguson left out of the Raiders' side for their NRL clash in Canberra on Sunday.

The Storm were preparing for Ferguson to make a return from his month-long NRL-imposed suspension at Canberra Stadium despite not being named in the Raiders' squad.

Ferguson terrorised Melbourne in their round eight clash, scoring two tries and booting four conversions in his side's 24-20 victory at AAMI Park, which was the launch pad for his NSW Origin selection.

While reluctant to change a winning side, Canberra coach David Furner said the 23-year-old outside back needed another week with the Raiders' feeder team to work on his fitness.

Ferguson was cleared to return to playing duties last week after completing an alcohol rehabilitation program following a series of off-field incidents.

Mal Meninga: Why is the coach always the pawn?

  • MAL MENINGA
  • THE SUNDAY MAIL (QLD)
  • AUGUST 04, 2013 12:00AM

SACKING the coach - it is the get out of jail free card for a rugby league club and its failings.

It is the annual ritual where, about halfway through the season if a club is not performing, whispers begin and linger and regrettably it is often the coach who is the last to officially hear about it.

It's been the same old story for a long as the game has been played - and it is an issue.

Where is the fairness in this process? How does the coach protect his integrity and his future?Unfortunately, it is a one-way street.

Among all the wonderful advancements and best practise methods that continue rugby league's growth into a fully professional sport, one thing has remained the same: the coach is the pawn.

Not the players, not the administration, not the board. Only the coach. If there is a problem, removing him will fix the problem.

They are the sacrificial lambs for those who think coach sackings are the only way to drive change, a divisive decision that fabricates a public perception that leadership has been exhibited by the club.

Clubs are entitled to make their own decision of course, and North Queensland did that last week by sacking Neil Henry. But here is where it gets interesting: Neil is a terrific coach. I know he is. Anyone who has been within a metre of him knows he is.

He did a great job in Canberra, he did a great job as assistant coach with Queensland.

He is very astute in every technical and tactical application of the game. That hasn't changed.

So why would the Cowboys throw away such a valuable asset?

Because that is the way it has always been done in rugby league. If the results aren't there, sack the coach.

The big Dog Sam Kasiano takes out rugby league's heavyweight crown

BULLDOGS forward Sam Kasiano had rugby league guru David Middleton reaching for the record books Saturday before emerging a clear-cut winner in terms of the heavyweight title.

Currently tipping the scales at around 138kg, Kasiano has blitzed a crack big-man field to be crowned the heaviest forward to ever lace a boot in the 105-year history of the code.

Rugby league has had some wonderfully skilful big forwards over the years - think Immortal Artie Beetson, Steve "Blocker" Roach, Glenn "The Brick with Eyes" Lazarus and the great Norm "Sticks" Provan. But none of those greats of the game would have come within striking distance of the prop labelled "Dogzilla" on a set of scales.

"I've never come across anyone bigger than 138kg," Middleton said.

Equally as significant as Kasiano's massive frame is the Bulldogs' winning strike rate when the big prop has been in the side since coach Des Hasler arrived at Canterbury at the start of last season.

With Kasiano in the team, the Bulldogs have a 71.9 per cent winning ratio. Without him, it drops to 45.5 per cent.

Mother of Anthony Milford appeals for Canberra Raiders to let him go to be by his sick dad

  • PETER BADEL
  • THE SUNDAY MAIL (QLD)
  • AUGUST 04, 2013 12:00AM

"PLEASE, let my son come home."

With that heartfelt plea, Anthony Milford's mother, Marietta, on Saturday appealed for Canberra to understand her family's plight and do everything possible to reunite the Raiders sensation with his sick father, Halo.

"I hope and pray that Canberra understand my family situation and let Anthony come home," she said.

Milford is weighing up a return to Brisbane, possibly as early as next season, in a move that could deliver the NRL rookie-of-the-year contender to the Broncos.

Just turned 19, Milford is contracted to the Raiders until the end of next season, although the deal contains a get-out clause related to family illness.Keen to retain the Queensland under-20s skipper, Canberra have sought legal advice and are determined to ensure Milford honours the final year of his deal.

But Marietta has concerns that run deeper than football. The family had planned to move to Canberra at season's end to support Milford, but Marietta says doctors have ordered Halo not to travel as he recovers from a heart attack suffered 18 months ago.

The medical advice has shifted the goalposts dramatically. Marietta says she is forever indebted to the Raiders for supporting Milford, but says the teenager is yearning to return home to care for Halo, who still requires weekly check-ups.

Stars will land on the capheap

IF ever there was a reason for an urgent inquest into the NRL salary cap, this is it.

While the rich get richer, rugby league's foot soldiers - made up of more than 60 NRL players - have just five weeks to save their careers.

The list ranges from former Test stars, premiership-winners, 200-plus game performers and players on less than $80,000.The brutal truth of the situation is that more than half will end up on rugby league's scrapheap.

The NRL have been harassed in recent weeks to loosen the cap in order to lure rugby union's Israel Folau, Kurtley Beale and Quade Cooper to the game, but this story is about the players that prop the entire game up week-in and week-out.

Despite Newcastle's Craig Gower proving at 35 in his comeback to the NRL that age is just a number, the likes of Anthony Minichiello, David Stagg, Matt Bowen, Luke O'Donnell, Ben Ross and Willie Tonga head a long list of players who could be forced into retirement.

An unprecedented number of elite players signing with clubs in 2013 is one of the major reasons for the talent overflow this year.

Sixty per cent of every club's $5.15 million salary cap goes to top 10 players from each team. The top three players of every club's roster suck up 25 per cent of the cap. That leaves just 15 per cent of the cap for the rest of every club's top-25 roster.

It has been a seller's market for next season with the likes of representative stars

Johnathan Thurston ($1 million), Robbie Farah ($850,000), Jarryd Hayne ($800,000), Todd Carney ($700,000), Gareth Widdop ($620,000) and Josh Reynolds ($600,000) in a position to nominate the biggest salaries of their careers.

While the Storm were very good for the most part of today they were lucky that the Raiders dished up the sh*t that they did as imo they were fairly fragile at stages during the game. Still conceded 5 line breaks as well as 15 missed tackles despite not having to do a lot of defending. Milford's try was way to soft and not Storm like. They may well be on the way back to their best but they will still want to be much better defensively against the big Rabbitohs pack looking to make up for last nights p*ss poor effort against my mob.

Canberra has to be one of my most hated sides. Terrible bunch of players, terrible bias journalism and fans are full of themselves.

Good riddance.

Their fans are absolute nuffies (apart from my brother). Can't think of a supporter group that deserves that result more.

U8's could of scored some of those tries today. Will be good to see how much they are ''back'' this Friday up against the Rabbits.

Without Sutton or Inglis...Storm 13+

And yes Canberra were ordinary but it still takes a great performance to score 12 tries...The Storm were really good and should not be dismissed so easily

Brisbane Broncos pair up with the New Zealand rugby union

BRISBANE development chiefs have flown to New Zealand to inspect the All Blacks set-up as the Broncos explore cross-code methods to stay ahead of their NRL rivals.

The Courier-Mail can reveal the Broncos have struck a relationship with the New Zealand Rugby Union in a bi-partisan move designed for information sharing and improving development structures.

A four-man team led by Broncos development boss Brendan Barlow attended the NZRU’s headquarters in Auckland a fortnight ago.

It followed an initial visit by the Kiwi organisation’s junior-development staff, who toured Brisbane’s Red Hill training base in May to glean insights into operations at one of the NRL’s most professional clubs.

The Broncos’ recruitment-and-development strategies have come under fire in recent times.

Cowboys honour fallen King Henry

RUGBY League honouring their fallen "King" was the emotional surge that pushed North Queensland to their best win of the season.

Veteran prop Ashton Sims revealed the turmoil surrounding his good friend and coach, the dethroned Neil Henry, steeled the Cowboys to turn their shock first half lead over table-topping South Sydney into a brilliant victory.

The Cowboys have lost three games this season by just two points and another two games by just four points.

In their previous match against the Brisbane Broncos they led with six minutes to go until Justin Hodges exposed flat-footed defence to steal victory.

South Sydney Rabbitohs put on brave face in wake of John Sutton injury

AS John Sutton hobbled into Sydney Airport on crutches Sunday, Rabbitohs legend Mario Fenech unleashed a rallying cry for Souths fans, roaring: "We're not going anywhere."

Souths have lost two of their past three games and face rampaging Melbourne on Friday night at AAMI Park.

Five-eighth Sutton was assisted from the field with an ankle injury in Saturday night's 30-12 loss to the Cowboys in Townsville and will have scans Monday to determine the extent of the damage, although one Souths official said: "It's not as bad as first thought."Sutton may still miss a couple of weeks of football, with youngster Luke Keary expected to fill the hole left by Sutton.

Keary is a fine prospect but will play under pressure and expectation as Souths attempt to win their first premiership in 42 years.

Rabbitohs halfback Adam Reynolds will be monitored Monday for a knee injury, but is expected to be cleared to play the Storm.Souths could have further worries after prop Jeff Lima was placed on report for a shoulder charge on North Queensland star Johnathan Thurston in the 25th minute.

In better news, injured superstar Greg Inglis is recovering strongly and could be back playing in a fortnight.
