Toohey's News

I’d love to see Hunt stay, but it seems we won’t have a lot of $$$ for him and seems he will have to move on to get better $$ if that’s going to be his priority. Only positive is our other young guys coming through are showing a bunch of promise and hopefully we have a good production of elite talent for decades to come.

Hunt is a constant threat in attack but a liability in defence. I think he needs a
Big improvement next season to be a
definite re-sign,
It would be hard for him to get any defensive cohesion when one week he’s playing left centre, next week he’s right centre, this week he’s right wing and week 1 of the finals he’s probably 19 again. Personally I reckon his defence would be fine if he was able to string 5-6 games in a row in the same position

Curious if other clubs are in for Rostron.

Seems weird otherwise not to sign. Curious what you’d be negotiating at 17 before playing a game of SG Ball. Granted he now has an Aus Schoolboys jersey.

Hunt will find a contract here or somewhere else pretty easily imo. Just about what $$ he wants.

10
Best was a rubbish defender for at least a year.
Gagai was a rubbish defender for his entire first stint at the Knights.
Two of our best now.
100% Gagai also through his rabbits career. Long known as the turnstile.

Defence can be trained. Natural athletic attributes cannot - thats the X factor.

Agree if he could nail a spot and stick to it he would Improve dramatically. Also being right centre outside of DB would help him develop.

I dont wanna loose this kid, buuuuuut he probably isnt in our top 10 must retain players (including those already signed)

Young players like him and their managers want tiered deals

Like next year he would get money worth him being sg ball/jersey flegg level
Maybe year after a straight flegg deal/ incentives for NSW cup
Year after development deal
Year after NRL

That’s how most young guys and managers want contracts and how clubs like roosters/bulldogs etc always took best juniors offering deals like that

Yeah, that was the quote from POS. With our salary cap position he didn't think we could offer Hunt near his market value. I wonder if that changes if Best doesn't resign? I think POS is ultimately confident of keeping Best and Young.

I have seen enough from Hunt, and the improvement he has made since debuting in first grade that on the unlikely scenario Best leaves I wouldn't have a big issue securing him on a reasonable 3 year deal. Whilst acknowledging he still has a lot to work on and isn't a finished product. I know others may see it differently and don't think it's worth it.

Funnily enough he has been just as good of a backup as Sandon Smith due to the various injuries in the backline, whether it's Best/Ponga/Gagai or Origin duty.

Thanks.
From what I’ve read over the last 12-18 months the club seems pretty hot on him.
Makes me think somebody else is offering something more - eg Flegg for 2027 or something like that.

Thankyou, I enjoy the insights of those with a little more know how.

Doesn’t always work out though with deals like this

Will Cannavo The son of Blake Cannavo got a deal like that the other year, we told him that it wasn’t going’s to work, he got same deal at Manly and was meant to be in there top 30 this year or next year, he p[layed 1 flegg and 1 nsw cup game for them and hasn’t played since

Difficult to work out who is worth these deals and who not too

Using the punter’s analogy, it’s a bit like greyhounds and horse racing, sometimes you take a punt on what you have got.

No Toohey's news in the League supplement in the Herald today.
The main article is about Dylan Lucas and his disappointment at missing the finals. It goes through the grizzly details of his injury and says he is on track to start running soon and feels he'll be fit by the time the world cup starts.

Where the Toohey's news would normally be is an article by Greg Prichard that says only Penrith or Warriors can win this year, and they will probably play each other in the GF.

Maybe the Toohey article is delayed this week because the news he wants to drop has to wait till the club makes it official? (just my speculation)

He already heavily hinted at Dom re-signing. Not sure what other news there is. Best vs Bostock will continue as speculation. Sully would be thinking Bostock is significantly better business. And I think Best is lengthening odds every day to be here in 2028.

I get why players do this I really do. Your career is short so it has to be as lucrative as your potential allows but I really hate the circus around speculation. Do you wanna be here with the offer on the table or do you want to lead us up the garden path while the bidding commences? I really respect Ponga for getting the job done before NRL 360 had months of “there’s rumblings he’s off to Japanese rugby and he thinks Newcastle is a big dookie town.” Definitely went up a few pegs saving the club and its fans all that annual garbage.

You often hear a player say, “the manager is finalising things or there’s talks in the process it’s out of my hands” BS. The player is never not in control of the final say so don’t go pretending it is, you aren’t bigger than the vision and game itself and everyone is replaceable.

If you have a centre wanting 800k a year or whatever it is, for that kind of scratch he’s not allowed to be injured ever and no off games. Rather see 400k spent on someone mad hungry and is around for most of it personally.

Edit: I get we have guys on way more than that doing just that (sitting on sidelines)
but the role of a centre is far more basic than a half or fullbacks and good ones of those are harder to get.

No one will Hold it against Braddy to go to Parra. I am not going to sit here like a hypocrite and pretend as a father he should not take the money they are offering if it is what they report. I would if I had a new born and partner to set up for life. It won’t be the last time he wears a Knights jersey.
