Toohey's News

And Arthur if rumours are to be believed, I read from someone on here a few months back that he was on over $420k
I was chatting to a parent of one of our lower grade players at my local last night and we got talking about the junior pathways. He mentioned that POS prefers to handle all the junior retention himself. The thinking is that if a player doesn’t develop the way the club had hoped, it’s easier to move them on because he’s already built a relationship with both the player and their parents.

I asked him whether we should expect any more players to be moved on and he did mention Schiller. Apparently, Schiller’s signing was rubber stamped by POS, which is why there was a delay in registering Schiller’s contract while we were waiting for POS to be officially signed on by the club. The parent said Schiller has attracted strong interest from other clubs, but he and his partner are very settled in Newcastle.

Sounds to me we are stuck with Schiller for another year. If anyone gets moved on, I’d say Matt Arthur is the more likely option. He’s well down the pecking order here and despite being POS’s first major signing, he would be a decent backup hooker in the NRL or starting hooker in the Super League.

Amazed that Perth haven't made an offer for Matt Arthur given their current hooker is "Player not signed" and their best back up is "Player definitely not signed".
Arthur will need to prove more than he should otherwise because of his size. On paper his height and weight make him a non-starter. To the trained scout Arthur is clearly an NRL quality prospect but the size issue also makes it an unnecessary gamble.

We might have trouble getting rid of him. His old man would take him im sure, but perhaps the young bloke doesnt want to move to England

If he does than we are hoping KP, Sharpe and Brown never get injured until Butler or Hunter are ready to which Hunter is nowhere near close to being ready.

While Smith is more than good enough to start for many teams including this one, he needs to find a club that appreciates his talents and don’t have a hard on for turning a fullback into a five-eighth.

But I understand he is a stop gap for us in the way Graham is a stop gap until diesel is ready

Where did you think Sharpe was gonna play? We have a guy called Kalyn Ponga at Fullback. I think you'd find that there aren't that many clubs Smith would start for, most teams have good halves. He's a perfect backup half.

Didn't Arthur only come here because of AOB?
Completely! I believe there was a deal made with him with the prospect moreso that BA was going to land here as well (maybe a carrot dangled to brown at the time too - a bazillion pesos and 50 year contract sure helped 🤣) but that fell to ground. .I’ve heard around town Matt was signed on for 350k a season. Was he rubber stamped by POS? I am thinking more on AOBs direction. He’s a hooker only, no utility option with him and all I’ve seen from him in the past 3 years here and Parra was a defensive liability covered by a few moments of good. He would have been better staying at Parra - not sure why it all fell out there, he was held in high regard still by players and staff. Helped when a contract was offered for better money I’m sure!

We'd be mad to let Sandon go before his contract is up. He's in the squad every week and starts anytime we lose 1, 6 or 7 and possibly centre (depending on where Sharpe plays). IDK why some have it in for him; he's been great for us.
With the cap supposedly going twofold up I’d even contemplate signing him further (nothing ridiculous) but he may want to start elsewhere.

The only and I mean only reason I’d contemplate letting Sandon walk is that since we signed him they introduced the 6 man bench which now makes versatile utilities way less valuable. Now you can just have 3 forwards a hooker a half and a back 5 sub on your bench.

But he’s on about the NRL average salary and has played 80 in the halves more often than not this season. This season has been the ultimate test case for retaining him even with the new bench rule.

Maybe if someone is dangling $800K and a guaranteed start we don’t stand in his way, otherwise why speculate about him leaving. He’s been very valuable for us.

This is exactly right. Plus he’s come here for an opportunity at first grade and being from central coast, not too far from home. Do you really think he gets a spot in that roosters team this year? He’d be happy just being named in first grade each week. I can’t see him being unhappy plus he signed here knowing brown had already signed and Sharpe was a weapon.

He might not have expected Ponga to extend. If Ponga left, then I guess it'd be Sharpe at 1 and Sandon & Brown in the halves. That said, the team is doing well, he hasn't played a full year of a 4-year deal yet, and he's still playing in firsts each week. This is just weird speculation really.

He might ask for a release.
He came here looking to be a starting 7, and that's not happening.
He might want to try somewhere else.
He probably will at some stage but hopefully we can hang on to him for at least another season or two.

We need the spine depth, with our luck with injuries. We’re not sitting in 2nd if we didn’t have him this year, with those early injuries and Origin, simple as that.

Ideally we’d have fullback cover that wouldn’t require moving Sharpe and then we wouldn’t be as reliant on Smith but until then we need to keep him for as long as we can.

I think the deal happened before POS arrived.
