Trey Mooney discussion

Having players actually awake and aware supporting the ball carrier makes for massive change after the past few years

Don’t care what position they play but it’s nice to have someone make break and now have players pushing in support rather than down the other end of the field. Same goes for being awake for offloads, there’s actually people there now expecting the ball. Actually playing footy, crazy

He’s coming along nicely. I don’t think he ever will be the number one prop in the team but he offers something different with his offloads and support play.

I thought his game v the Dragons was his best game for us, after his game the week previous v Rabbits. And was very surprised to see him find that level of performance in back to back games.

Then he comes out and does that, today. Wow. Aggressive, physical and high energy in defence. And even better with the ball in hand. I thought today was his best game yet.

If this is his new normal, we have a $900k middle forward on our hands.

From all the reports I was confident we got a got one when we got him. He will still have games where he might struggle a bit, against stronger packs, but he is only 24 and this is his first year in FG. The upside is massive. He can produce performances like the last 3 games we are in for a big year with him and Jsaf leading from the front.

Mooney only needed time and games at NRL level. He still has a heap of improvement in him yet. Love watching Trey play.

You don't see it as much these days, but a lot of forwards need game time to get match fit.

I read an article explaining why years ago and it basically said they need to have adrenaline driving them to go beyond there limits to improve, and that only really happens when they are in an actual sporting contest. Training isn't the same thing.

The Safs were dreadful with that when they were young. It took 5 or 6 weeks into the season before they had any sort of fitness.

Anyway, it's not unusual for young forwards to get fitter and fitter the more they play.

Shoutout to Mooney, he's improved steadily as the season has gone by. Since Jsaf went down, he has really stepped up. It's easy to forget that this is his first season starting and playing consistent minutes, but as his role has increased his workrate has too. These are his stats from his latest games:

Nothing compares to the little heart attack you get when a player’s thread is at the top with a new comment…what’s happened now?!?!

Agree, he’s been great.
We saw glimpses of what he’s capable of early on, but lacked a bit of consistency playing week in week out NRL.

Think he’s built his engine up now, and I think he’s starting to find what works for him. He looks like he’s running harder tbh. Bit of positive reinforcement helps as well. Getting accolades for your hard work.

He had Safs leading the way. Now he finds himself leading Hopwood and Crouch.
Bit like captaincy I guess, sometimes it lifts your game to the next level. Maybe he’s taken it personally to “show them what to do”.

I’m excited to see just how far he can push.

Agree that he seems to be taking on the challenge of being the main prop and thriving. Captained the Eels, Raiders and u19 Blues as a junior so clearly has been seen to have some leadership qualities since early on.

They seem to have put the passing/offloading and more risky plays (that he's capable of pulling off) in the back pocket for now in favour of building a more solid base of the traditional parts of being a prop, and it's working well. Will be a special player one day if he can combine both.
