The Cogger/Gamble duo was our worst in attack last year, averaging 2 tries scored per game, and just eye test wise they looked horrible together. Oil and water. That’s the last thing to do if we want to win games.

Fletcher is getting the nod because of a belief that that’s what will help us win.

Also while you can’t necessarily predict 2025 form on 2024 performances, the start to the season is:

Tigers (probably without both Api and Luai)
Dolphins
Titans
Bye
Bulldogs
Tigers
Sharks
Warriors
Rabbitohs
Titans
Eels

Some of those bad 2024 teams might be good in 2025, but it would surprise if even more than a couple of them are. You’ll probably never get a weaker run of opponents against whom to ease Sharpe into first grade in that spot. With a well-timed bye after three games to do a review & a big training block to target specific stuff you need him to work on.

AOB literally said last week that Sharpe is his 6 and he was still deciding between Cogger and Gamble for 7.

The Straightener played his way straight out of that conversation last week so unless Gamblor ****s the bed it's pretty obvious what the Round 1 side is, it's the one AOB has picked for the trial (unless Elliott is fit by then, in which case Croker probably drops out.).

Need to be 3-0 going into the bye, if we arent we can pack it up until 2026 😅

This weeks trial is pretty close to selection for rd1, changes for me are Brailey to 9, Crossland to 14 the only other change will depend on Elliotts fitness, if so he to 13 with KPP or Frizell to bench for Hetherington or Croker.

O'Brien might bet his career on starting the season with a rookie 5/8 - if he's had a stroke or been replaced by an AI generated Ricky Stuart.

I mean, what about O'Brien's years of cautious selections makes anyone think he will start a year we must win early games with a 20 year old who has never played 5/8?

I think the long term plan is to get Sharpe into 5/8, but I can't wrap my head around O'Brien going all in on Sharpe for round 1.

Sharpe and AOB have said he will be the 6. Think everyone can see we need more strike in the side and picking Sharpe at 6 provides it. I don’t see it particularly different as what Crossland had to do at the back end of last year. He wasn’t responsible for any playmaking, he’d take a run if he saw it, hardly did any kicking but most of all would just get KP the ball on the left exactly how he wanted it.

Sharpe will be able to do all that plus he’s an extremely dangerous runner who will probably pop up both sides of the field. The question marks will be how does he handle of defence, however next to Best and Lucas I am confident he can handle it.

This does have a bit of the whole KP at six vibes! If you watched the All Stars game, KP was the main play maker and did most of the kicking.

I think that will be case with the Knights also. Until Sharpe gets more confidence. I highly doubt AOB will put Shapre in Reggie’s. But it’s a bit of a risk yes.

Sharpe will get another chance on Sunday with the full FG side. We will also see if that’s the case with KP playing similar to how he did in the All Stars.

His not going to make the mistake of chopping and changing halves again. He will pick and stick. If he doesnt pick sharpe now and brings him in later he will feel pressured to revert back if it sends us backwards and thats yet another change. He picks him from the start and it doesnt start well all he needs to say is we are committed to this long term n need to be patient. Reality is 2025 is a building year for when we have POSs roster from 2026 onwards and sharpes apart of that it looks like, id bet he will be given all season regardless.

If club is going for a more attacking style as we saw in first trial I’m stoked to see it and Sharpe will be a good foil for that.

The only thing the team will want to be mindful of is if Obi has given the tick to release the leesh and let them attack then they are going to have to do better at defending errors. I know last week was a trial with a fair few reserves but the whole squad needs to do be there mentally in D. Otherwise Obi will do same thing as last year and say “play basic effing footy again until you earn the right to attack”

Crossland 9. Brailey 14. All day for me. Why would you want Brailey......known for leg injuries to be in the most brutal part of the game? For his own health it makes sense to have him coming from the bench and then Crossland moving to 13 to spell lock. Anything else seems like a waste of a bench spot.

I dont think it will be long until we see 9. Crossland 14. Arthur.
we have made no secret of our desire to move brailey on and from what ive seen matt arthur is nrl ready. Maybe we are just keeping brailey in the shop window for now.

Sharpe is a risk but so is Cogger and the utter mediocrity he’s shown for the vast majority of his FG career. As mentioned we need to start well but I’d be more inclined to take a punt on a halves pairing with Sharpe which has plenty of upside as opposed to Cogger who has pretty much zero upside.

Sounds like Luai will be fine for round one now

This. I’d rather risk Sharpe, who is a naturally gifted footballer and willing to have a dig in both attack and defence, than someone like Cogger who clearly shuts off when the going gets tough and lacks any creativity with the footy.

Really think there’s a lot of unfairness to Cogger going on lol. Have only heard great things about his care factor, professionalism, etc. He’s got limitations to his game but on balance when he’s come into the team his role has been to kick well and facilitate the better players around him and I think it can be argued he did that better than anyone else did last season.

Gamble also has a lot of credit in the bank as probably the guy who’s individually been most impactful on results. He was inconsistent in 2024 though and I really don’t agree with him being clearly ahead of Cogger if you factor in end of season form.

Either way as long as it’s not Hastings or Crossland starting at 7 I’m happy.

Hopefully soon the answer to this question is “Dylan Brown”, and Gamble, Fletch and Cog are all competing to be his halves partner next year.
