Toohey's News

25/7
Quotes O'Sullivan as saying we are very interested in Jonah Pezet and Toohey says Troy Pezet has said he is not opposed to his son returning.

Speculates that Newcastle and Parramatta could be working on a player swap - Brailey for Arthur - also says he speculated that Brad Arthur could come here 2 two weeks ago and this adds to the chances.

Says playing Best after origin was a "big mistake" and says it's cost him the rest of the season and a kangaroos jersey.

Says junior recruitment guy Doyle has left soon after we appointed O'Sullivan and we are looking for a new one.

We signed Pearce in precisely the way I described. And for an about $1.2m a year?

Tell me that didn't immediately lift the team into a different class. And explain to me how it totally destroyed our cap?

This is the problem with this club, we've literally already successfully poached a marquee 7 for overs, it had the desired impact and yet we ridicule the suggestion of trying it again when the only alternative is to continue doing what we've done post Pearce, which hasn't worked. Make that makes sense please.

And to those people saying 'all the good halves are signed' yea bred, so was Pearce! We need to advertise a $1.4m pay packet for a marquee 7 and I guarantee you a marquee 7 will emerge from absolutely fkn nowhere sooner than people might think. Credit Brown he truly did understand how to build a squad starting with just money.
Hope no one tells the Roosters, who have well over $1.6 million coming off the books at the end of this season, that all you need to do is wave a good salary package around and whichever player you want will force their way to your club. For years they’ve been signing players once they’re off contract like absolute mugs.

Article says we can't talk to him till Nov 1 about the 2026 season and also says Hastings will be off contract for 2026 which frees up 800k to sign a quality half.
This is correct, but I’d argue it’s a clearer cut example of a situation where an early release for 2025 is a strong possibility. I would guess Pezet’s value on the open market was around $5-600K pre ACL injury and it would have gone down now. If Brailey and D Saf are out the door next year, even if we’re paying freight on both, I’d imagine the money would be there to bring him over. For Melbourne it’s hard to justify keeping him now both Hughes and Munster are locked down for so long.

People on here won’t want to hear it, but we’ve performed well under AOB every season he’s had a serviceable halfback.

2020-21 we made the eight with Pearce.

2022 Pearce ditches us, we have no halfback and we miss the eight.

2023 Hastings comes in and performs great, we go on a big winning streak.

2024 Hastings falls to bits with a buggered ankle and we’re back in the doldrums.

It’s almost like it’s an important position …

Well, I don't feel performing well is limping in to the 8 and going straight out without any chance of making a dent.

You can be happy with that if you like.

I'm not!

Strawman. I said a halfback. Not $2.5m in edge backrow forwards. And $10m in backs.

They granted Pearce a release because they’d signed Cronk. I don’t think there’s too many clubs out there with 1 top halfback let alone a spare.
There are innumerable reasons why a player might seek a release from a club. We don't need to guess how a player might become available for this conversation to be valid. We don't know where or how a player might become available. But if we're offering big money then we go to the top of the list in the mind of every player manager. Not a bad start to manufacturing the fastest possible outcome.

Pezet isn't the guy imo.

If we want to enter a premiership window we need to poach a top 6 halfback. It'll cost big money, but it's a gamble that we need to take imo. Better to gamble on a Moses at $1.3m than to gamble an extra couple hundred grand on some average forwards I.e. Hethro and DSaf. You could remove them from the squad, buy Moses with their cash, and promote a couple juniors who hopefully go close to replacing their output. In which case, we're in a better position because we have Moses at 7 (ignoring the 800k paid to Hastings)

It's exactly what any of the top clubs would do. Because without a first class 7, you're always just making up the numbers. And we will have wasted Pongas entire career on plan A, which was, wait and hope for something because all the good 7s are too expensive.

Dumb dumb dumb
I dont we could sign one on that much and keep KP, our roster would be cooked then.

is this Nathan Tinkler?

I was happy with 2020-21 after three straight wooden spoons. And was definitely happy after last season.

You can be not happy with that if you like.

I was!

😂

Sure, I was happy after last season. But here we are the very next season back to being a rabble again.

Anyway, it's clear there are sections of the forum that believe OB is underperforming and should be gone, and sections that think he is going ok given injuries and what not.

I await the end of this season when we miss the 8, and look forward to next season of OB ball where we start poorly, can't beat top 4 teams, struggle to have any intensity in most games and mid season need to go on a long winning streak to make the 8 again.

The Knights have underperformed under coaches for regular seasons for decades. This is not a new thing. AOB is the closest to getting the team to regular finals.
3 weeks ago we were singing praises that our attacked looked great against Melb and Penrith.

We're a long way off but becoming regular top 4 competitive teams is not an easy gig in the NRL

Pezet reminds me a lot of Votano. They even look like brothers.
They both have a calmness about them and can both pluck a try assist out of nowhere.
The difference is that Votano is 7cm taller, 10kg heavier, faster, and 3 years younger.

We'll see what happens next season. As I said in a previous comment it's a huge one for him. Would help if we could find a decent halfback option though.
