2024 Recruitment and Retention Thread - Rebuild 2: This Time It’ll Work For Sure (Unironically)

I think Tuala has tried his arse off this year. His physical attributes are his downfall. Not big enough to be a battering ram. Not explosive, not agile like gagai. Not super fast. Not tall. Not a huge jumper.
Effort 100%, but just doesn't offer enough in yardage/attack.
Agreed. I would keep him in the squad but we need something extra from a starting winger.

💯. He has a bit of a following on here but besides his effort I’ve never seen what the fuss is about. Individual brilliance every 5-6 games shouldn’t be enough to keep a player on the park in any team but we have no choice. Though this year our wingers would have to be the least exciting in all the comp and maybe half the super league. Would kill for someone half as good as Jimmy Mac was or even Nathan Ross

Not sure he is a walk up starter in the middle of the comp, but I can see him jumping to the top of the replacement list.

He's been running rings around NSW Cup - 11 tries in 7 games, averaging 171m, 8 or so tackle breaks and seems like every week he scores at least one long-range try and makes it look very easy. His upside is way higher than Tuala as both an attacking threat and yardage player but defence has been an issue, similar story to Marzhew when he arrived but a few years younger.

Raiders have signed Savelio Tamale from the Dragons for next year so it's conceivable that they're getting him early and letting Schiller go but I haven't seen anything else on it other than here. Raiders forum seems unaware as well.

all very true, but Gagai has refused to pass all year.

Tuala is an experienced winger. He has actually finished well most times he has got the ball on the wing. Of course Young was a bigger threat, and made it easier for Gags to funnel the ball to, but all wingers in the comp are there to finish off backline plays. He has barely received the ball in space this season.

To be fair though, Marzhew has barely scored this yr. More a reflection on our attack as a whole.

Exactly, Gagai is 213th ranked for try assists this year with 1, and Best is 212 with 1. Not sure why they’re not equal 212 but there you go, not good!

Last year Gagai was 23rd with 13, and Best 20th with 14.

Our outside backs just haven’t been getting quality ball all season long. That’s down to Ponga being injured, and our halves going way too sideways and not posing a running threat, they have created zero space.

Also last year was a pretty big anomaly, usually you don’t get two wingers in a side both with 20+ try seasons.

But it’s rather simplistic to blame our wingers for lack of tries this year, imo.

Theyve struggled to get good ball all year, combo of our poor halves and poor go forward to enable ball shifting.
