Round 7 - Knights V Panthers - Saturday 15 April 5:30pm - McDonald Jones Stadium

Why?

In rugby union for example, games can have between four and seven competition points on offer depending on bonus points. The NRL had bonus points in their pre-season tournament this year. Soccer gives 3 competition points out to a winning team, but only one each in the event of a draw. Domestic cricket comps have different numbers of competition points available depending on the result. And I could go on.

The number of competition points awarded in a game isn't some sacrosanct rule that can never be different. Plenty of comps run perfectly fine on that basis. Though I do agree that the best outcome would be just getting rid of golden point altogether.
They can all be open to manipulation. I remember a cricket game back in the old World Series where if NZ couldn't win, then if they lost heavily enough to South Africa, South Africa would get a bonus point and Australia would miss out on the finals, so NZ did a go slow in their chase. Not great sportsmanship, but I could see the same happening in the NRL. And South Africa ended up beating NZ in the finals series, so there was some karma!

The thing I like about the 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw system is it is so simple.

Yeah I think we should just scrap golden point.

I’d be okay with golden try. The field goal **** is ********.
I think golden try would just end in a draw most times anyway.
I would scrap golden point for normal rounds and keep the finals how they are 10mins extra time then golden point.

Classic reactive NRL, they needed to have a premiership decided by Ben Hunt dropping a kick off before realising hey golden point isn’t a great fit for a grand final 😂
And that was another one where the other team didn't get a touch of the ball (other than the knock on).

Sides deserve a right of reply, at least a set each. But in that case it was the Broncos so it was quite funny lol.

Personally for the grand final I'd love if they went back to the old ten minutes each way, 20 minutes extra time. Like it was until golden point came in. There's no match the next week, so why not do it properly?

Here’s a thought…

What if teams in golden point are awarded 2 chances at a field goal attempt and the first team to miss the two loses. Teams are going to be less inclined to have a crack at the posts and try and score instead? maybe even two chances at screwing up, like a forward pass and a knock on, automatic loss.

I don’t mind golden point but I really really hate repeated attempts at goal until the entire 10mins are used for a draw. Might add an element of excitement. I know it still wouldn’t have helped the Knights last night with blockjaws kicking being spot on but other games…🤷🏼‍♂️

Personally, i like golden try. First 5 mins extra time, both sides down to 12 players, next 5 mins, down to 11 players. Play until a try. No field goals. Makes no sense to play extra time in a completely different way than you play the first 80.

Well to be fair, reducing the players on the field is also a new kind of game too, just like the field goal shootout. I don't mind the idea of a draw, but I do think golden point does add a lot of theatre and excitement throughout the season, there are often big moments during those games that people remember and talk about forever. Draws just don't have that.

I would do the 1 point when teams are tied at the end of the game, and then another point for the winner in golden point. Everyone walks away with something. Extra time can stay in finals, we don't need games going forever all the time. And with golden try, it would be exciting, but I don't like the idea of limiting the game to only tries. A team should be allowed to win in any fashion it can, if they have a clutch field goal kicker on their side then they should be allowed to use them.

Countback.
Team with most possession in opposition 20 wins?

or Team with least penalties conceded wins (send offs and sin bins count double)?

or team with most forced drop outs wins?

The random field goal method feels less fair than any of those methods for deciding a winner.

Noooo I’m having 2019 Cricket World Cup final boundary countback flashbacks!!! 😂😂😂

Fair enough mate. I wouldn't say reducing the players on the field in extra time is a new kind of game in itself. It's the same game, just more spaces for tired defenders. I understand where you are coming from though.
