Adam O'Brien replacement?

If they start slow AOB is dead in the water.

The media will have a feeding frenzy and a coach can't survive that level of scrutiny.

You can't say teams can start slow and your happy to give him the year, and then say we have the squad to give any team a scare and it's the coaches fault if we don't.

Simply put, if OB can't motivate them to turn in performances based on effort, getting there, sliding defence in numbers to help the centre/winger defend, and looking like they give a chit then he needs to go.

This place needs a hard man to come in, set clear standards that are upheld no matter what or who, and be given the freedom to drop/cut players who don't uphold the standard no matter the player.

Only once this happens, with the whole club at every level can we see the results fans expect.

Saifiti from what I read came out and said he let his standards drop as he signed a long term contract and lost motivation. That is on the coach!

A player losing motivation is on the coach... wow that's beyond ridiculous

Is was hoping to see an improvement right across the board similar to Manly, the Dogs and even the Dolphins. I would like to believe we were not fully committed to the defensive part of the game to keep the injuries under control. And maybe Ponga was looking after the calf.

The good coaches get the players to believe in them "get on the bus" so to speak

Exactly, head coaches have assistant coaches that handle a lot of the implementation of the plan.

Head coaches need to be motivational, play for me types. If players don't care about the coach they arent going to buy in.

Agree. Players need intrinsic motivation. Coaches can only do so much. Not sure why coaches alone are responsible for making players want to play. Are players not also motivated to play for the fans, their teammates, friends and family? Are they not motivated to be the best in the sport at their position? Are they not motivated to rub good performances in reporters' faces after a critical article about them? To be selected for rep sides? To earn another contract? Because it's their job to play? There's literally tons of reasons individuals might be differently motivated. Coaches certainly have some responsibility, but far from all of it.

I don’t think it’s a binary of no motivation/heaps of motivation depending on coach. Every professional athlete is motivated. They all train hard. They try.

The better coaches get that extra 10% out of their guys. They get everyone pulling in the same direction. They decide what the team is gonna do and get buy-in from everyone even if it seems to initially be not working and the media is telling them what they’re doing is wrong.

I don’t know what the exact difference would be if you put Bellamy in charge of the Titans and Holbrook in charge of the Storm, but I am absolutely certain the Titans would improve and the Storm would go backwards.

Bellyache would decide on what he thinks his best 17 is and stick with it. He’d figure out how he wants them to play and he’d keep them on task regardless of initial results until things improved. Certain players who are notorious for clocking off a bit under fatigue would find just that little extra something.

Holbrook wouldn’t pick the same lineup two weeks straight, injuries or not, they’d become way more inconsistent with how they attack, and they’d start having “uncharacteristic” lapses in defence where they concede multiple tries in succession.

Would this all of a sudden mean Melbourne’s players are “unmotivated” and don’t have a dig?

The old adage that a champion team will always beat a team of champions comes to mind. Some teams are greater then the sum of their whole. To me, that comes from a coach having a clear plan that is shown to work over a period of time, meaning that each individual in the team comes to trust the plan and to trust the players next to them to carry it out. The motivation then becomes more than playing at a level that might get you noticed for rep level, it becomes one of not letting the blokes around you down. This is where Bellamy and Bennett have been so successful. These teams are usually marked by defensive excellence and seemingly no difference in performance levels whether playing at home or away, or the size of the occasion. They just get the job done.

You’ve just said what I tried to say above in a much more concise and intelligent way 😂

We also had some pretty strong and knowledgeable characters as coaches back in the day. I don't think AOB and Nathan Brown are in that category

I agree a coach may not be responsible for a player being motivated, but they for sure can play a big role in de-motivating them. This is where the classic man mangager coaches set themselves apart.
