2022 Knights Recruitment & Retention Thread

It is common for me but i am earnestly baffled.
Can anyone please explain to me what transpired with Mitchell Pearce's leftover contract money that was allocated for 2022? Wasn't it valued around $650k? (dropped from his original offer by $250k due to off-field issues)
I keep reading some media outlets saying that we won't have sufficient $'s to chase a decent halfback. How can that be? I know we signed milford for a part-season cameo however i didn't think that required a significant outlay ($150k?). We also already had clifford & clune signed prior to pearce resigning.
Maybe it's that one year's allotted salary cap cannot be carried into the next? Even if that is true, where did or better yet who did the $650k (his original allowance was reportedly $900k) go?
Or did KP's new contract take a hefty chunk?
Apologies if this has been discussed &/or explained previously but i still have my MS Forum training wheels on.
 
You can’t take salary into next year (otherwise a lot of teams would go through a boom-bust cycle of tanking and contending like you see in the NFL). What you can do is pre-pay existing players future years’ salary under the current cap. But the player has to agree and all that.

I don’t think that reporting about the club not having any money for a half is just incorrect. The money is there, the question is who to spend it on.

And with the cap set to go up, everyone has money, really.
 
Yeah the reporting from the usual suspects is just guesswork, join the dots ****. 'We haven't signed anyone decent therefore we haven't got any money'..

We definitely have money I believe, just haven't been able to spend it.
 
They’d be silly not to with the cap about to go up & their price likely at its highest now, before the wheels start to fall off at Parra with Papali’i and Mahoney leaving…

Just my guess - I've heard nothing about him since it was reported we signed him.

Kalepo still with club, must have suffered a serious injury as at training with first grade today but wearing a pink bib which I’m assuming is some sort of injured notice

Seen him at plenty of games this season with the injured crew on the sideline but don't recall ever noticing any obvious indicator of what's preventing him from playing i.e knee brace or moon boot. Definitely has been with the team all season though.
 
We have plenty of young hooking talent at the club but so far we have struggled to transition them to grade football effectively.
Kalepo - NZ u18s, Mitch Black & Luke Huth - both Australian Schoolboys

Mitch Black is a bit of a weird one, has barely been used in Flegg this year but was given time in the NRL trial against the Dragons in 2020 as an 18-19yo, was a semi-regular in Cup either that season or 2021. Spent most of this season playing for Souths in real NRL first-grade.
 
Next year seems like it'd be the time for one of the young guys to emerge as a real option. Brailey is a good hooker but hasn't had good injury luck, whereas Randall will do the job, but he's not adding anything to the team. He's the definition of a NSW Cup guy who will fill in for an injury and do an admirable job. It's about time for a young, exciting propsect.

I personally think Randall is our best 14.
Tackles anything that moves,
Can fill in at hooker, 5/8, lock & back row at a pinch.
I'd have him over Mann.
And we wouldn't have the coach wanting to start him in any position possible.

But I agree he isn't a starting hooker and hope one of the young guys kick on.

Randall is just a worse version of Mann
 
randall is a better defender, but no player offers the versatility mann does. ive still got mann as my lock next year though, which is an unpopular opinion.
