2018 halves combination

Quotes of how Brown said Watson was going to be 5/8 and we should believe this because he said it to the press, yet when Pearce says he is looking forward to forming a combination with Lamb, and how he has big wraps on him, we can't believe that as "of course he would say that" to the press.[/

Way to read into it too much. He was specifically asked about Lamb, of course he wants to build a combination with him, much like with all the players in the squad. He also said this:

Ponga is one of the most promising up-and-coming talents in the game and Pearce says the young gun fullback, along with Connor Watson, will inject some much needed flare into his new side’s attack.

“He’s unbelievable, he’s one of those guys that reeks of class, the way he plays footy, his footwork you can just tell he’s a superstar.

“He’s a really good bloke, he wants to be the best player he can be.

“Some of the things he’s done at training … we’ve only done a little bit of light ball work and he’ll definitely make my job easier.

“With Connor there as well I feel like there is some really ad lib, fast players.

“I feel like the Knights are going to play a really good style this year. “

So he hasn't just straight up declined to talk about Watson either as it seems like you're alluding to with his Lamb quotes. He answered questions about Lamb who's very relevant at the moment so that must mean he's preparing to play with Lamb as his 6?

The best thing about all this is that we have depth to cover most positions in the team except centre but then if we lose a centre Skd can play there and we bring in a winger ....For the first time for ages we have the depth to cover all positions ...

Still think either way the depth in outside backs is quite thin right now but very happy everywhere else.

Manly should try to get Cogger for minimum wage and a shot at firstgrade.
He would be the bargain buy of the year.

The key is to breed all the good players you can, and if you have positions you can't fill, sign the best players you can.

Have we not played a young and inexperienced team the past couple years in hopes that they would develop? Did we not sign the best players possible (who would actually sign with us) to fill positions of need and improve the playing squad?

- Ponga (one of the very best juniors coming through the game, no clear cut fullback here)
- Watson (exciting young player, Nines player of the tournament, part of a very successful Roosters team, versatile, five-eighth spot was vacant at the time)
- Ese’ese (young explosive front rower with upside, weak unit for us)
- Guerra (experienced, GF winner, Origin winner)
- Lillyman (experienced, Origin winner, weak position for us)
- Heighington (experienced, great clubman and teammate, GF winner, improves depth)
- Griffin (comes from the best club/system in the game, replaces Kostjasyn and Randall)
- Pearce (top tier half, best player on the market at the most important position on the field, can help turn the club around)

Lillyman and Heighington reek of over the hill, but we lost a lot of props from last year, and we have only signed them for 1 year.
Griffin is a reserve grader who I don't think we need, but he is cheap I think.

The ones I have a problem with are Hazard, Naden, Roqico, Sio, all guys I can't see any value in.

Can't expect all signings to be marquee signings. The ones you mentioned last would be lucky to see FG apart from Sio. Every club makes them signings. You do have to field a reserve grade side as well as FG.

Stop being so upset over Lamb losing his spot in the top grade to a better player at this current time. If he is as good as you say he will find a way into the top team.

They’re all depth signings and NSW Cup needs to be filled after all the players we released. Doubt any bar Sio will see first grade anyway.

Heighington yes, but his value lies off the field at training where he can teach these young guys how to be true professionals and how to last in this league as long as he has which is no easy feat. He will also provide decent depth up front. He’s only one season removed from being a staple on that Sharks bench, and two seasons removed from being a staple on the GF winning Sharks team. This signing wouldn’t have broken the bank. The pros easily outweigh the cons.

Lillyman isn’t in his prime anymore being on the wrong side of 30, but last season he averaged 26 tackles and 14 hit ups for 127 metres. I’m perfectly fine with that “over the hill” type of player. He’s got boat loads of experience and is a no nonsense hard man. He’ll be good for us next season, both off the field and on it. Front row has been a weakness of this team for years now and we’ve finally shored it up, yet you’re unhappy? We’ve got 3 good young props with 2 hard nosed experienced players. That’s a good mix.

You say Griffin is a reserve grader yet he was good enough to play a role in the best club/team this game has ever seen who went on to convincingly win the grand final last season. That about says it all. Griffin isn’t a flashy player by any means, but he’s a hard working “glue guy” that can hold it all together and won’t let you down. You probably hated Matt Hilder too. He’s only 26 so his best footy is likely in front of him.

The ones you have a “real problem” with are nuffies signed to play NSW Cup who count almost nothing towards the cap. Also what’s wrong with Ken Sio? You don’t like cheap first grade quality wingers who are mistake free and do their job?

I don’t know you or your posts here from a bar of soap as I’m only relatively new, but you seem very unreasonable and seem to be pushing some sort of agenda.

Well at least it's not a hidden agenda.
I've always been very clear about it.
I think all attempts to buy a premiership by us in the past have been dismal failures. Very, very few of the players we buy live up to the hype - for every Ben Kennedy there are about a dozen Hodkos or Ben Cross's.
Guys like Starling, Wardle, Stockwell, Tupou, Pauli, Paea etc etc etc all seemed like a good idea at the time - as do this current lot - but history says, don't get your hopes up - most will be very disappointing.

I don’t see it as buying a premiership, we’re just adding pieces to help improve the playing squad. All clubs do this in every sport. There’s not a single team that doesn’t go out and sign players from elsewhere to help them win games. Sharks did this 2 years ago. Without the signings they made, no way they win the premiership.

Not every signing you make will be a good one, but you can’t simply sit on your hands and do nothing. Would you rather be successful with new additions, or be bottom of the table with nothing but home grown juniors? Serious question btw, because ultimately that’s what it comes down to.

For the record, I support the Newcastle Knights jersey, not the history/background of the players wearing said jersey.
