2018 halves combination

Sharks did this 2 years ago. Without the signings they made, no way they win the premiership.

The Sharks won the comp with one local junior in their side.

As for imports being disappointing, I'd wager 2018 will be no more disappointing that the last few, or say 2005, when we had the local guys trying their hearts out and losing 13 in a row.

The stats show Lillyman is quite a good, but underrated player. I never really noticed him but I guess there was a reason he was getting picked for Queensland. His age scares me, I think if he stays fit then he'll be a bloody good player for us, but being 33 just makes you scared he's gonna tear an ACL in pre-season or something.

I was there when we broke our duck at Penrith after Joey made his origin return and knocked over QLD.

You just knew we was never gonna lose.

Lillyman and Heighinton will be ok I think don't see them playing long minutes but certainly showing the way and by having them here for just a season will add a bit of polish to those younger players, Dan, Jacob, Esee'ese etc.

Only really has Frawley to beat, who is a reserve grader. Mbye playing fullback apparently. I hope he goes there if they're offering him a chance, will be right in contention for the jersey.

Cogger is a massive bargain in the current market.
I'm a bit surprized Wests haven't tried to get him, with his father being a Wests legend and all.

Unless they want him for reggies, I don’t see why they’d pursuit him with Brooks, Reynolds, Benji and Lolohea.

Toohey article saying clubs are lining up to offer Cogger a firstgrade chance.
Says Dean Pay, who coached Cogs in NSW under 20s last year, seems keenest.
Pay must have actually had Cogs in his sights before last year because Cogs was only a few games back from injury when picked for NSW and was nowhere near peak fitness. Despite him making every junior rep team since he was 14, I thought he was lucky to get selected last year, only because he was coming back after months off due to major surgery.
Also says Brown is not keen to let him go.

With the shortage of halves these days, Cogs is definitely the bargain buy at the moment.

I don’t think we should let Cogger or Lamb go even if they get an offer like the bulldogs one we need back up halves in case of injury. Cogge rbeing offered the starting spot at the dogs sort of shows how much trouble they are in thou and they look headed for bottom four if not the spoon. While Cogger is a good young player his not ready to be the first choice 7 at a club yet and Foran will do him no favours his form at the end of last year was woeful.

Can we really afford to let either go? our halves depth is abysmal.

No reason cap wise to release them either so I say we keep both.

I like having young Cogger waiting in the wings for us, but if I were a fan of another team like the Bulldogs and we were signing a small young half like Cogger who’s been in reggies to be our first grade halfback, it wouldn’t get me all that excited tbh.

He’s got some potential, but let’s not overrate him by saying he’d be the bargain buy of the year. Not every Newcastle junior who may leave is bound to be a sure thing.

EDIT: Bargain buy of the year would be Carney if you need a half. That guys been so hard done by and is a real talent. He’s got something to prove as well. He’d also come cheaper than Cogger.

True.

Mick Ennis (Valentine-Eleebana), Brett Kimmorley (Lakes United), Brett Finch (Valentine), Matt Rodwell (Singleton) are a handful of playmakers who come to mind.
Glad to see the back of those guys before they shat the bed.
