Slade Griffin announces his retirement

We will just have to use his nickname mozza - Nugget!

Browny recruited him whilst at the Storm so I would suggest he has more than a fair idea what he brings.

Cheap and ok is not good enough, we need quality performance player who can play hooker 1st grade long term if required. What is the good of having 6-7 first rate props and a fill in as hooker, won't win a comp. Let's get real need 25 1st grade players, top 17 then 8 playing cup, 3 backs, 5 forwards -(2 props, 2 backrowers and a hooker) then injuries, suspension are not so much of a worry. As long as stay inside cap doesn't matter who costs what, are they the player we need/want.

Yeah a guy making the 17 in the best team in the comp aint worth our time.
U actually seem him play? His a worker and can give good service.

How many teams have 2 gun hookers. Oh right none. You have your gun then a couple of average or average/young players no one stockpiles 1st graders.

The only explanation is they are looking for a top 17 signing. If you sign Lichaa then he's either gonna get 20 minutes off the bench & waste a spot, or block Starling's spot in reserve grade. Griffin can take up a spot in the 17 & still play backrow. I wouldn't like to see Levi go down for the season & watch Griffin & Starling play out the year though.

One thing I'm loving about the signings for next season. Not only re they good players but they come from great clubs with winning cultures which is huge for our boys. These guys know how to get r done week in week out and prepare for every game. Guerra, SKD, Watson from roosters. Moga, Ese'ese from Bronco, Ponga from Cows. Griffin from Storm all those teams are still there week 2 of finals. I suppose Lillyman is the exception but he has been apart of the QLD set up for a very long time and that's arguably the greatest set up of all.

Exciting times ahead can't wait for next season.

I agree and am sure this is apart of Brownies thought process while making this strategic signings from successful clubs.

Times ahead will be exciting although it won't be instant success like some are predicting.

If they be smartarses sign Licha probably the better offer. Lol at his manager pretending slades any more than a bit member of any squad.

With the way Lichaa played the last 3 weeks of the season, I'd be leaning towards him if Brown's purely after a backup hooker. Griffin can obviously play some backrow if needed so he's got a little more versatility, but as a true hooker, I think Lichaa offers more provided he's got the green line to run from dummy half which I don't think would be an issue here. Levi certainly does. Sounds like Des handcuffed Lichaa to an extent and didn't allow him to play to his strengths. He was a gun junior who was know for his attack. Last 3 weeks of the season it looks like he went rogue and was just playing footy. Best I've seen him play at Dogs. He was a big reason they started winning.

For mine I will go with Browny's choice. He was at the Storm when Nugget Griffin was recruited so I imagine Browny knows just what he is capable of doing.

Good enough to make the storm 17 is surely good enough for ours. I agree with it to have purely a back up hooker on the bench is a waste in my opinion. With Buhrer and Griffin there is ample cover if something goes wrong. Plus Starling and even Pearsall as depth if need be.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with Griffin. Tough player from a winning culture/system and has some versatility. If we're in the market for a genuine backup hooker but, which it appears we are looking at Griffin/Lichaa/Rein, I'd be leaning towards Lichaa and giving him the green light to play attacking eyes up footy from dummy half which made him one of the best emerging hookers not long ago when Dogs poached him.

Griffin will certainly add some value to our team, but I think we have enough backrowers in Guerra, Buhrer, Mata'utia, Barnett and Fitzgibbon. Personally, I wouldn't have Griffin as a backrower over any of them, so that versatility is somewhat moot unless we get injuries. Those guys should all be locks for first grade and you've got buckley's carrying more than 5 backrowers in your 17 (3 starters, 2 on the bench). We also have Buhrer who has that game day versatility to play hooker if need be. I think finding a genuine hooker who's not a zero in attack to backup Levi (even if he's playing Super Cup) is more valuable than picking up a makeshift hooker/backrower to play that role.

But I digress. I do like the addition of Griffin if it comes to fruition, just what it appears we're looking for and the makeup of our squad atm, I'd lean a different way after watching Lichaa the past month. I think he's got untapped potential in the right system under the right coach.

My concern is long term injury to Levi early in season, don't like the idea of Griffin or Buhrer filling in for long extended period that is why I lean towards Lichha, too soon for Starling he can still play U20 and fill in at cup if required. Pythian, let's just get him back on paddock.

Griffin would be about a $150k and Licha would easily command double if not more than that.

For someone paying second fiddle you don't pay decent dollars.
