Parramatta Eels’ finals hopes hit by a second-half blitz from Newcastle Knights
IT took just 28 minutes for Parramatta’s season to potentially implode at Hunter Stadium.
That’s all the time it took Newcastle to pile on 36 unanswered second half points to leave the Eels play-offs hopes hanging by a thread.
A victory over the Knights would have left the Eels on the edge of a finals berth for the first time in 2009.
Instead, their Newcastle hoodoo continued and they will now need to beat Canberra next Saturday and hope other results go their way to squeeze in.
Newcastle had won their last six games against Parramatta going into the game.
But leading 12-8 at half-time and with so much more to play for then the Knights, it appeared they would go on with the job despite running into a stiff second half breeze.
But the Knights produced a scintillating second 40, running in six tries with Chanel Mata’utia scoring three for the match and his brother Sione a double.
The Knights ran riot out wide and did a great job of shutting the Eels dangermen Jarryd Hayne and Chris Sandow out of the contest.
The Knights suffered a setback before the kick-off with starting hooker Travis Waddell forced out of the game through illness.
It caught the home side on the hop with coach Wayne Bennett forced to call on debutant Tyler Randell, who had just played in the NSW Cup game prior to start the match.
If the late change was unsettling, it only got worse for Newcastle after they gave away a penalty when halfback Tyrone Roberts’ short kick-off into a stiff breeze to start the game failed to go 10 metres.
The Eels didn’t score from their first set but it was 6-0 when the Knights gifted Parramatta possession again in a handy attacking position soon after.
This time, Chris Sandow made them pay, coming up with a clever switch of play and finding his centre Will Hopoate running a great line to score.
The Eels looked sharp early with Sandow to the fore but the Knights gradually worked themselves into the contest and were on the board in the 17th minute through winger Sione Mata’utia.
Moments earlier, Jarryd Hayne pulled off a try-saver on Knights centre Joey Leilua but it was to no avail as Mata’utia crossed out wide from the ensuing scrum win.
With the Eels guilty of some errors in their own half and the home side growing in confidence, Newcastle hit the front 25 minutes in with Mata’utia crossing for his second try.
It came after a sweeping backline movement caught the Eels short on the right.
Kurt Gidley missed with both conversion attempts but the Knights appeared likely to take their two point advantage into the half-time break before Eels backrower Tepai Moeroa stormed through three defenders in a rampaging 25 metre burst to cross under the posts.
In the space of three minutes early in the second half, Newcastle raced in two tries to set up an 18-12 advantage.
Jarrod Mullen got rid of two would-be defenders for the first and then had a hand, along with Beau Scott and Dane Gagai, in winger Chanel Mata’utia’s scoring out wide.
The Knights rammed home their advantage when Chanel grabbed his double for a 24-12 lead before Scott continued the Eels second half misery by crossing after 64 minutes to extend the lead to 18 points.
If the game wasn’t over then, it was when Leilua deservedly crossed 13 minutes from time with the Eels defence in tatters by that stage.

He was fantastic ran for about 140m., was only behind cuthbo(178m) and Rochow(148m) as our top metre maker. Beau Scott really should be our captain ran for 98m and topped the tackle count today, his just fantastic every time he pulls on a jumper.

Cuthbo is a champ. Has a deal elsewhere for next year and could be on a yacht in the Greek islands but still giving 100% for a team with nothing to play for.

what a game the excitement kept me from freezing amazing from leilua, mullen the mata'utais, cuthbo and pretty much everyone can't wait for dragons, we could beat anyone at home.
He said Tahu was trying to score his 50th try for Newcastle at one stage?!
Was it reported somewhere that Bennett told us to stop offloading at halftime? Or is that a malicious rumour?

Settled Knights return to form

Newcastle coach Wayne Bennett has credited a more settled squad facing fewer disruptions for the huge turnaround in form between last week's dire loss to Brisbane and Saturday's huge home win over the Eels.
Newcastle bounced back from their 42-point flogging to Brisbane last week to put the Eels, fresh off beating the ladder-leading Sea Eagles themselves, to the sword in a 42-12 flogging of their own.
Asked about the form reversal, Bennett said it was a matter of things "settling down".
"When we went to Brisbane last week we had two players rubbed out because of the ASADA investigation so we have had a week to think about that," Bennett said after Newcastle's 30 point win.
"When I look back at the season, we started Round 1 without our two key players, Kurt [Gidley] was injured that day and Darius was hurt after 20 minutes as well and they didn't play for four or five weeks and by the time they came back we were struggling a bit... and the list of distractions goes on any time we looked to have any momentum."
With his team running into the wind in the first half, Bennett was glad the Knights were only down by four points at halftime with the wind well and truly on the opposition's side in the opening 40.
Newcastle blew the game open with five tries in a 12 minute period midway through the second half after becoming the benefactors of the swirling wind.
"The breeze can sometimes be something you think you're going to get an advantage out of and you don't – so it was important we capitalised on it in the second half," Bennett said.
"We carted the ball from the back of the field pretty well in the first half... and minimised our errors which helps with the breeze."
Newcastle captain Kurt Gidley was proud to keep the home fans happy after watching his team execute fluently in the final 40 minutes of the game.
"It was awesome to stand behind as a fullback and see the plays that we trained for come off, which we stuck to, and we didn't try and get away from it in the first half and stuck to the game-plan which was good," Gidley said.
"I know over the past month we have been enjoying our footy and doing our home fans proud and all that comes from is more effort to start with.
"It has been a tough season and all our fans go through all these emotions as well so it is nice to give back to them."
In what will prove to be a memorable debut, Tyler Randell started the game at hooker for Newcastle when Travis Waddell pulled out sick minutes before kick-off.
Fresh off a full 80-minute run for the 12-man Knights NSW Cup team, Randell put in an admirable effort which saw him finish the game early due to a nasty head gash.
"He's not well," Bennett said. "But he's pretty happy to be a part of it."
In what has been an otherwise bleak season for the Novocastrians, their 42-12 win over the Eels kept a couple of streaks alive heading into their final clash of the year against the St George Illawarra Dragons.
With seven wins from their past 10 games since snapping a seven-match losing streak earlier in the season, Newcastle extended their winning run at Hunter Stadium to four games while they also beat the Eels for the seventh consecutive time.
Newcastle will be looking to not just continue their home winning streak next Sunday but also snap a four-game losing run against the Dragons when St George Illawarra travel to Hunter Stadium for what will be each side's final game of 2014.

A stellar second half earned the Newcastle Knights a comprehensive 42-12 win over the Parramatta Eels at Hunter Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Stand out performances from centre-wing combinations Joey Leilua and Sione Mata’utia as well as Dane Gagai and Chanel Mata’utia piled on the points for the red and blue.
The return from half time proved lucrative for the Knights with the side managing five tries in just 20 minutes.
Tyler Randell backed up his NSW Cup effort to debut in the Knights run-on side as hooker after Travis Waddell withdrew during the warm up due to illness, in an otherwiseunchanged line-up.
The Knights battled a strong head-wind in the first half but despite the disadvantage, the side’s effort could not be faulted.
The Eels went on the attack in the opening set, when the Knights’ short kick off didn’t make the mandatory 10 metres.
The visitors threw plenty at the Knights, but managed to survive the first raid.
However, soon after, a short side ball gave the opposition room with Will Hopoate running clear to score under the posts
The try was successfully converted by Chris Sandow to open the Eels’ lead at 6-0.
In the opening 15 minutes, the Knights worked hard in defence but it proved energy sapping for its hard working forwards.
The Knights got their first real chance around the quarter mark of the match.
A penalty for the Knights got them started before centre Joey Leilua made a break down the sideline.
His pass to Sione was intercepted by the Eels Ken Sio though and knocked out of play for a Knights scrum feed 10m from Parramatta’s line.
From the scrum, quick hands worked the ball out to 18-year-old Sione Mata’utia, who crossed the line in the corner before grounding just to the side of the post.
Gidley’s kick sailed wide of the posts and the Eels remainded in front, 6-4 in the 21st minute.
The left-side combination was to trouble the Eels again when Leilua brought out another powerful run to pass to Sione, but a one-on-one strip saw the Eels back with the ball.
The pair turned up the heat again, this time snatching a lead for the Knights when Sione crossed the line for a double off another well-placed ball from Leilua.
Gidley was unable to convert the kick but the Knights took the lead 8-6.
All the while, the Knights made a persistent effort to give Eel’s livewire Jarryd Hayne little space to make an impact in the first half.
Veteran Knight Timana Tahu came into the game in the 36th minute for his first NRL game for the 2014 season to replace Adam Cuthbertson.
Tahu ended up playing around 40 minutes in his return match.

The lead was extended to two converted tries clear of the Eels when Gidley nailed the kick from the sideline, the score 24-12 in the 60th minute.
More pain was inflicted on Parramatta when an overlap saw enforcer Scott barge over the line in the 64th minute, with Gidley adding the extras to bring the score to 30-12.
Leilua was aptly rewarded by a Rochow pass which saw him run clear to score with Gidley’s successful kick stretching the Knights to a 36-12 lead.
The Knights continued to shut down the Eels as well as their dangerous fullback with more than 22 offloads keeping the visitors on their toes throughout the game.
A nasty head clash took Randell from the field in the 75th minute then a dangerous tackle on Chanel Mata’utia was being placed on report.
Chanel shook off the injury to score his hat-trick when he grounded a perfectly placed Mullen kick centimetres shy from the dead-ball line.
Gidley added the extras to close out the impressive 42-12 victory for the Knights, on a day where all three grades notched up Round 25 wins.

Brilliant effort today.
For a team that had nothing to play for that was amazing. Can't wrap them anymore than that tbh.That was ultra impressive.
The 2nd phase play was magic, high tempo, entertaining footy at it's best. If they play like that next year they'll be a contender no doubt, to do that as a team with nothing to play for against a team who had everything to play for really indicates what a great effort it was. Couldn't be any prouder. Up the Knights!!!

Young Randell looked the most competent rake we have fielded this year and great to see that playing for the home crowd come back into the team.
What a great day. The rain held off and all 3 grades got a win. I hope they try and have all grades play at home on the same day more next year. I was surrounded by Eels fans, but they are always well behaved and respectful, unlike a couple of other teams, but don't get me started on that.
If the knights are in striking distance at half time, and the opposition score first , I am always supremely confident of a win, but not a flogging like that. I thought their defence was superb, shutting done the Eels attack and forcing mistakes. Their attack was entertaining and they looked like they were having a ball. I notice Rick Stone led them off the field at the end, and the evil in me thinks that on the way back to the field at half time he told them to forget Wayne's instruction of more direct play and less offloads and do the opposite
.
Tyrone watch -when that kick off was a balls up I cringed and thought we were going to be in for 'one of those games' but he bounced back well and I thought he had a good game without being a standout. He seemed to do a lot of defence (may have missed 1 or 2), and loved when he put someone over the side line, and the great chase on Sandow, (that penalty was garbage) . I also think his kicking game is improving with a nice grubber for a dropout and a few great high swirling bombs.
My man if the match - Joey Leilua. Outstanding all game, played with energy and passion and killed them all game. They were all fantastic.

Chanel climbs Mata'utia try-scoring ladder

"Was that OK?"
That’s how budding Newcastle winger Chanel Mata'utia finished his interview with the media following his starring role in the Knights' 42-12 win over Parramatta.
While the timid 22-year-old was unnecessarily apologetic for his post-game chat, Newcastle fans were doing nothing but singing the South Newcastle junior's praises after he scored his maiden NRL hat-trick.
With his little brother, 18-year-old Sione scoring a hattrick a fortnight ago and a further double against Parramatta to make it a combined five-try effort between the two on Saturday, the second-eldest brother – after Dragons centre Peter – admits there is a sneaky try scoring competition happening at the Mata'utia household which is currently tied up at five-apiece leading into the final round of the season.
"Don't worry, I'll get him," Mata'utia laughed.
"There is a competition and you don't want to be beaten by your little brother so it is on. We joke around and give it to each other at home.
"It is amazing [though] and I'm just really happy to score a hat-trick as well as get the win."
Knights coach Wayne Bennett was complimentary of the two brothers following Newcastle's resounding win and believes the decision to have them on the flanks following season-ending injuries to James McManus and Akuila Uate has worked "really well".
"Sione was always going to be a top player and nobody has doubted that since they first saw him play but Chanel, when I first came here a couple of years ago, was so far off the pace it didn't matter," Bennett said.
"It is a real credit to him that he has done a good job with himself and bought into what we have done at training and he is a very good player.
"He always had the ability but never the right attitude earlier on so it is nice to see and I think it's a special thing to see two brothers play in any team at any stage."
Mata'utia acknowledged Bennett's claims that he had areas to work on but was ultimately blessed to make his debut alongside Sione back in Round 20 in their amazing win over the Sydney Roosters.
"It is good to see him get a debut and it was even better when I made mine in the same game so it was like two birds, one stone really," Mata'utia said.
"I'm just thankful to get the opportunity to debut. I've had a few areas over the years that I have had to work on which obviously I have since then."
While his stint in the NRL will come to an end next week against older brother Peter and the Dragons, Mata'utia will gear up for the NSW Cup finals with the club finishing second in the reserve grade competition.
