Knights bounce back for Eels

Newcastle Knights' Robbie Rochow is confident the team will bounce back in Saturday's match against the Parramatta Eels at Hunter Stadium after a disappointing loss against the Brisbane Broncos last weekend.

"There’s no doubt in my mind we can play well, we’ve seen that this year,” he told the media on Tuesday.

“We play well at home and there’s no doubt we can finish the year strong."

Rochow said the team has recognised where things went wrong against the Broncos and is set to rectify mistakes in order to put up a tough fight against the eighth-placed Eels.

“It was a tough loss and was a hard game…we fought well but just didn’t execute,” Rochow said.

“We didn’t get to our kicks and put ourselves under too much pressure, then a whole heap of defensive errors came into the back end of the game.

With any opposition in this competition, you can’t afford to not build pressure.

“We didn’t manage to do that by dropping the ball and not getting good kicks away.

“It snowballed on us at the end.”

Despite the absence of a number of the team's starting players, Rochow has confidence in the Knights’ depth and makes no excuses for the weekend’s performance.

“We fielded a reasonable 17 and know we didn’t have our strongest side on the field on the weekend, but we knew we were capable of doing the job and we didn’t do it,” he said.

“This week we’ll have a pretty similar side and it’s just a matter of overcoming our own obstacles and making sure we perform well."

Rochow conceded the team feel the loss of Jeremy Smith and Kade Snowden, but is ready to adapt to the challenge.

“They are a big part of this side to have Jezza and Kade starting in the middle,” he added.

“That wasn’t our problem, because we defended well through the middle, we just didn’t build pressure.

“There’s a lot of things that can go wrong, but at the end of the day, we didn’t play well."

Gagai's focus is on the Knights

For Newcastle Knights centre Dane Gagai, the emphasis this week is putting the Knights loss to the Brisbane Broncos behind him and aiming for two big wins at Hunter Stadium to conclude the season.

Although admitting he wasn’t satisfied with his performance on Saturday, the 23-year-old was adamant he’s started the week with a fresh outlook.

“There’s a lot of things I could have done better, but at the end of the day, you’re going to have those days,” he told the media at a press conference on Tuesday.

“I just have to forget it now and look forward to these next two games and make sure I step up for the team.

“I was obviously wanting to play good up there because I had family up there to watch the game, so it was disappointing.

“It’s not the result we wanted.

“We came out in the first half and let in those two tries, but it still felt like we were in the game.

“In the second half we let it get away from us."

Now a major incentive for the team is to take the turbulent season out on a high and making its loyal Members and supporters proud.

“We have two more games left and they’re both home games, so we want to finish off the year on a good note,” he said.

“The mood was good at training and we’re all switched on so we’re looking to do a good job this weekend.”

The Knights face eighth-placed Parramatta Eels on Saturday at Hunter Stadium.

“They’re definitely a strong side and they’ve shown that all throughout this year,” he said.

“They have a lot of stars in their team.

“We just have to make sure we do a job on them and make sure we don’t give (Jarryd) Hayne too much room to move.

“That’s obviously going to be a challenge because as much as you try to plan for it, he’s just one of those players.

“We just have to make sure we go out and make sure we’re switched on.”

Gagai denied feeling added pressure coming up against his former Club last weekend, especially after inaccurate reports in the media stated he wanted to return to Brisbane.

“There was no added pressure there; I was just going out to do my job,” he said.

"I hadn’t said anything to anyone, so when I saw that write-up, I was a bit confused where it came from.

“It just came out of the blue."

Gagai confirmed he is committed to the Club until the end of 2015 and said he hasn’t given any thought about what he intends to do after that.

“I just want to finish off this year with two wins and have a fresh start next year and will hopefully come out firing,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to next season and hopefully doing a bit better than we did this year.

“My focus, like I’ve been saying all throughout this year, has been with the Newcastle Knights.

“I want to do what I came here to do and perform for the team, the Club and the fans."

Fans motivate Knights

The Newcastle Knights have two matches left to play in a tumultuous 2014 season and have a major incentive.

To make their Members and supporters proud.

The Knights finish the season taking on the Parramatta Eels in Round 25 and the St George Illawarra Dragons on Old Boys Day in Round 26.

The Eels are sitting in 8th position and the Dragons are in 11th. Both teams remain in contention to play in the final series.

Recent matches played at Hunter Stadium have been highly entertaining for those supporting the red and blue, including an after-the-siren win over the Melbourne Storm.

“We had a rough start at home for a fair chunk of the year but I’d like to think we’ve done our fans proud at home over the past month or so,” Gidley said after Saturday’s loss in Brisbane.

“I’d like to see us send them away after these last couple of games proud of their team and looking forward to next year.”

The Knights will be without Akuila Uate (knee) and James McManus (foot), who have both ruled out for the remainder of the season due to injury.

“When someone’s ruled out through injury or suspension or whatever it might be, you’ve just got to move on as quickly as you can and try and get your head right for the game,” Gidley insists.

The Knights have Monday off before returning to training on Tuesday.

It's official: the Newcastle Knights hate Queensland.

While they surely enjoy the weather, Dreamworld and the many other delights the state has to offer, they certainly dislike playing there or playing teams based north of the border.

Newcastle haven't been travelling all that bad in the past two months having won six of their past nine games but their three losses have come against Brisbane, the Titans and South Sydney.

You're probably thinking: what do South Sydney have to do with Queensland? That particular contest was played in Cairns.

Thankfully for Newcastle and their supporters, Parramatta has nothing to do with the Sunshine State.

However they are in form and are fresh off beating the ladder-leading Sea Eagles as they look to push forward with their finals ambitions.

With the Eels currently sitting at eighth on 28 points, a slip-up against the Knights will see them fall out of the top eight leading into the final round with either the Broncos or the Dragons set to jump ahead of them after Friday night's game, and the Warriors taking on a weakened Titans outfit across the ditch.

Keeping the ball rolling on their run to the finals, Parramatta have named an unchanged line-up from last weekend's victory with Pauli Pauli added at 18th man.

Newcastle will welcome back Timana Tahu to first grade for the first time since Round 9, 2013 for Joe Tapine. Jarrod Mullen also returns for Michael Dobson while Clydsdale and Waddell swap between the bench and the starting team.

Watch Out Knights:

Jarryd Hayne can't take all the plaudits when his Eels teammates are performing solidly as well.

Parramatta coach Brad Arthur labelled hooker Isaac De Gois's performance the best of his career after earning Man of the Match honours in Round 24.

Who can blame Arthur?

The wily veteran is averaging 40.4 tackles a game since joining the club midway through the year.

Others like Ken Edwards (23 tackles and 65.6 metres per game) and David Gower (20.8 tackles and 78.4 metres) are holding the fort strongly as well.

Watch Out Eels:

With Jeremy Smith and Kade Snowden rubbed out for the remainder of the season after accepting their ASADA bans, it is up to David Fa'alogo and Adam Cuthbertson to lift their respective games.

Fa'alogo is travelling well for a veteran with his 20.4 tackles and 78.1 metres per game, doing his role at the club justice but he’ll certainly need to improve over the remaining fortnight if his team are to be any hope.

Cuthbertson should prove a worthy replacement for Smith as well. When Smith was injured earlier in the season, Cuthbertson stepped in for a three game stint at lock where he averaged 131.6 metres and 35.3 tackles a game.

Plays To Watch:

Joey Leilua has been the one constant in the Newcastle backline this season.

While he is often susceptible to dropping the ball, Leilua has recorded nine tries and 11 try assists this season from Newcastle sending it out wide.

The last time they played Parramatta, Newcastle scored their first try by moving it wide with Leilua putting the icing on the cake for winger Akuila Uate.

While his three teammates involved in the shift (Uate, Snowden and Darius Boyd) won’t be featuring this weekend, the structures are in place for the Knights to benefit from in their remaining two games.

Is there anything better in rugby league than a sneaky play down the short side?

Eels' hooker De Gois reaffirmed this when he fooled everyone but Edwards, when he darted down a small corridor before passing it to his back-rower who barnstormed his way over the line for his maiden NRL try.

Where It Will Be Won:

Last weekend, Newcastle completed only two-thirds of their sets forcing themselves into making 346 tackles – 71 tackles (or 12 more Broncos attacking sets) than their opponents – who consequently thrashed them.

The Eels fared much better considering they completed 79 per cent of their sets against Manly.

Holding the ball is one thing but it comes a lot easier when defence isn't exhausting your energy.

With the desperate Eels looking for nothing but clinical performances heading into a possible finals series these aspects will be drilled into them by coach Brad Arthur, with Newcastle thinking similarly as they attempt to close out the season with their heads held high.

The History: Played 45; Knights 25, Eels 19, Draw 1

Unlike many over aspects, Newcastle has history on their side when it comes to taking on the Eels.

Including their last start 16-10 win in Round 16, the Knights have won their past six against the Eels with four of these fixtures occurring at Hunter Stadium. In fact, Parramatta has only won six times in Newcastle from 22 attempts.

Timana's happy return

Newcastle Knights legend Timana Tahu couldn't be happier about playing his first NRL game of the season this Saturday afternoon at Hunter Stadium.

"It is two more games to go, getting a crack at first grade is a good feeling and I am going to enjoy it, especially playing at home," he said after training on Wednesday.

Tahu suffered a serious knee injury playing for the Newcastle Yowies in the Koori Knockout last October, which nearly ended his season before it had begun.

In November, the 33-year-old underwent a knee reconstruction with a difference, where a tendon from a donor was grafted onto the bone in his left knee.

It meant Tahu walked out of the hospital unassisted, and resumed running on grass 11 weeks post surgery. It also meant he had the opportunity to play on in 2014.

"My main goal at the start of the year was to play good football," Tahu admitted.

"To actually start playing and have confidence in my knee. Then the second part was to be happy. If you do that, opportunities arise and one has now.”

Tahu has been playing in NSW Cup for the past two months, in the back row and centres, before coach Wayne Bennett called him up for
Saturday's NRL match against Parramatta.

“I got to play a few games in the back row and Wayne has given me a chance to play off the bench this weekend,” Tahu said.

Match Analysis:

Much the same as last week, the Newcastle Knights are coming up against another team fighting for their spot in the top eight.

While the Knights suffered a heavy loss against the Brisbane Broncos last weekend, the Knights has won four of their last five games played at home.

“Being at home is obviously a huge plus for us with our record being four from our last five and knocking off some top-four teams,” Ambassador Danny Buderus said.

“For us to bounce back though we have to execute a lot better than last week when we are positioned to score points.”

There are a number of players the men in red and blue will need to watch.

“Their go-forward has been really good in the last few months, especially from David Gower who offers footwork and also an offload,” Buderus said.

“Kenny Edwards is ripping that football forward along with Tim Mannah, which brings their shape into play and allows their halves and (Jarryd) Hayne to create some dangerous plays on the edge to defend against.

“Jarryd is showing that he can win any game for his teammates but he has a lot of support from guys starting to build confidence.

“We have to build a lot more pressure and be composed with the end of our sets.”

Currently sitting in eighth position on the ladder, the Eels are eyeing off their first finals series since 2009.

The Broncos, Dragons and Warriors will all be looking for a favour from the Knights on Saturday afternoon, each of them sitting only two points behind the Eels.

With finals out of the equation for the Knights, captain Kurt Gidley told the media they are intent on finishing season 2014 on a high note for the fans.

Where it will be won:

“The middle of the field will be where it’s won,” Buderus added.

That means the Knights need big games from David Fa’alogo, Wilie Mason and Korbin Sims.

Meanwhile, the kicking game was something the Knights struggled with last week, making only 369 metres while the Broncos pegged up 549. Jarrod Mullen will be the key here.

“Mullo will provide that along with seeing Tyrone Roberts play with a lot more confidence than he showed last week,” Buderus explains.

“If we can eliminate the metres they make it will hopefully nullify and blunt their attack.”

Last word:

“This week we’ll have a pretty similar side and it’s just a matter of overcoming our own obstacles and making sure we perform well,” Robbie Rochow said earlier this week.

Halting the Hayne train

On Saturday at Hunter Stadium, the Knights come up against the Parramatta Eels, who are currently in eighth position and fighting to secure a finals spot.

The visitors will be confident after defeating Manly last weekend and they also go into this round winning four from their last five games.

Then there is Jarryd Hayne, who has been in arguably career-best form.

For captain Kurt Gidley, he at least has a personal insight into how his opposition number ticks.

“He used to be my roomy in Origin and Australia, so we have a pretty good relationship,” he revealed.

“He’s probably one of the most talented players I’ve ever seen play the game while I’ve been playing, and I’ve seen some great ones.

“He has natural talent in the way he can turn a team and a game, we’ve seen that over the years.

“He’s an amazing player but I thought we did a pretty fair job on him last time down in Parra.”

The Knights will take some confidence of their own following their Round 16 win over the Eels at Parramatta Stadium.

“Last time we presented a straight line, we named him (Jarryd) when he was around the footy and nominated him around the ball, it’s all good
nominating him but you have to stop him as well," Gidley said.

“Getting numbers around him is certainly the key.

“He’ll probably will hurt you at some stage, it’s also being able to scramble and stop it before he scores, passes or gets any support runners.

“There’s probably no doubt he’s going to make a line break, throw a good ball to someone.

“If you’re working hard in defence and making plenty of efforts then you’re a chance of stopping it.”

The Knights know the Eels will come out firing but remain motivated by finishing the season out on a good note.

“We’ve had some really good wins over the past month or so and we want to send our fans away proud of their team and looking forward to next year,” Gidley said.

“I think we just want to finish the year proud of our last two performances at home.

“We spoke about that just as a team at the end of training, over the years there are guys that leave and have to move on, retire and those sorts of things and you like to send them off with a smile on their face.

Arthur wary of wounded Knights

Parramatta coach Brad Arthur has brushed aside the Eels' poor recent record against Newcastle but admits he's concerned by the threat of the struggling Knights.

A win on Saturday would put the eighth-placed Eels on the cusp of a first finals spot since 2009 but they must first overcome a side that has won the last six encounters between the two clubs.

Arthur's men head into the game on a huge high following last Friday's stirring victory over Manly and face a team with nothing but pride to play for.

Despite their lowly status on the ladder, the 14th-placed Knights have been strong at Hunter Stadium in recent weeks and almost a year ago smashed Ricky Stuart's Eels' 54-6 on home soil.

Arthur said he's not worried about statistics but is wary of acing a Wayne Bennett side who've just been smashed 48-6 by Brisbane.

"I am not into history, we couldn't win at ANZ, we couldn't win away from home, to me that is all what you make of it," Arthur said.

"But they are a good side. They are six from the last nine ... their last three home games have been wins over the Warriors, Melbourne and the Roosters.

"Newcastle have beaten us this year and they will be hurting after a heavy loss last week and playing for a bit of pride."

Heading off to the ground soon. Looks like it will be another wet one. Have got soaked a few times this season, and what made it worse is they lost.

Looking forward to see how Tahu goes. Should be a good atmosphere. No doubt there will be lots of Eels supporters now that they are winning. We often seem to be near lots of opposition supporters where I sit. It kind of irks me.
