vBookie: 2013 World Cup - Australia v Fiji

Yea I'd assume that because most grounds are predominantly used for soccer that is why the grandstands are so close to the action.

Yep was replying to your post while James posted what I said so didn't see his post.

Very unfortunate to Lewis and sadly this incident is unlikely to change anything regarding advertisement around the grounds. At the very least it should be padded up.

Agreed mate about the padding...

And I hate seeing that sort of thing happen to any player, Hopefully Luke makes a quick recovery and is ok long term

It's a bit difficult to increase the size of the fields there now unfortunately, you'd have to shift the whole grandstand. It's because they were initially built as soccer grounds, isn't it?

There's a lot more room at the ground England played Ireland at, so presumably it's a more modern or specialist rugby league stadium.

Yeah your right they were built for soccer initially..

Maybe (if they can afford it, Not sure how they sit financially) they could build a couple of new stadiums for Rugby League that way it's safer for all players...

Either way I hope that never happens to any player ever again (It probably will though)

World Cup could be over for Lewis

Luke Lewis could miss the rest of the World Cup with a shoulder injury.

Luke Lewis's World Cup campaign could be over after he dislocated his shoulder in an ugly incident in Australia's win over Fiji.

Lewis collided with an advertising hoarding beyond the dead-ball line while trying to score in the second half.

Lewis' shoulder was dislocated and it took several minutes for medical staff to put it back into place.

While Lewis is hopeful that scans tomorrow will produce a positive result, both captain Cameron Smith and Coach Tim Sheens conceded that his World Cup campaign could be over.

"It is really unfortunate for Lewis, but it looks like his World Cup is over," Smith told NRL.com.

"He is a great player and a great bloke and you never like seeing things like that happen.

"It would be a big loss to the team, but it means one of the younger players is going to have to step up.

"Both Josh Papalii and Boyd [Cordner] played really well tonight, it's just a shame to see him get hurt."

Lewis couldn't remember the incident when asked about it in the sheds at fulltime.

"To be honest, I don't really know what happened," he said.

"I don't think I've ever been in so much pain on the footy field. I was gone until they brought out the gas to numb the pain. Thankfully it has been put back in and you never know.

"Hopefully the scans tomorrow come up good and I'll be able to play again."

We rate every player from Australia's 34-2 win over Fiji at the Rugby League World Cup.

AUSTRALIA

Greg Inglis:
Excellent at fullback, Inglis was instrumental in the lead-up to tries to Boyd and Jennings in first half and Lewis in second half. Broke four tackles and ran a game-high 189 metres from 18 runs. 8.5

Jarryd Hayne: Did his job well on right wing, showed good defence and regathered the kick that led to the Josh Morris try. Also made four tackle breaks. 7.5

Josh Morris: Scored a try off a Hayne kick regather and produced a solid all-round performance. 7.5

Michael Jennings: Scored a try with a strong run in the first half and looked dangerous in attack, although he did bomb two certain tries. 7

Darius Boyd: Grabbed a try after some good lead-up work by Inglis in the first half. A typically reliable performance. 7.5

Johnathan Thurston: A Man of the Match performance, making a game-high eight tackle breaks including two that should have led to tries. Also nailed two sideline conversions in difficult kicking conditions. 9

Daly Cherry-Evans: Fantastic debut at halfback. Scored a try off a Tamou line break, set up the try to Papalii in the first half with a trademark short ball and was involved in the lead-up work to the Lewis try. Strong kicking game. 8

Matthew Scott: Another strong performance from the premier prop, making 112 metres from 13 runs. One strong run in particular led to Jennings' try in the first half. Also made 24 tackles and no errors. 8

Cameron Smith: Made 31 tackles and no errors, despite getting his hands on the ball more than every other player on the field. His kicking game out of dummy half has proven to be a match-winner. Was replaced by Farah at hooker later in the game. 7.5

James Tamou: Improved on his performance against England. Excellent in attack, making three tackle breaks, including one that led to the Cherry-Evans try. Carved up 126 metres from 13 carries, making for a mistake-free performance from the starting props. 7.5

Luke Lewis: Dangerous on the left edge before he dislocated his shoulder late in the second half. Scored a try off an Inglis bust only minutes before. Made the second-most tackles for the Kangaroos with 33. 7.5

Josh Papalii: A dream Test debut at starting second-row with a line break that led to his first try. Solid in defence and no errors. 7

Nate Myles: Led the Kangaroos in defence with 43 tackles to his name. Always rises for the big games, carrying the ball 11 times. 7.5

Boyd Cordner: Made his debut off the bench, using his trademark strong charges – including one in the lead up to Jennings' try in
the first half. 7

Robbie Farah: Like last game, added some energy to the Kangaroos attack in the later stages of the match. Put in some good kicks that questioned the Fijian defence. A real weapon for coach Tim Sheens. 7

Andrew Fifita: Another solid performance off the bench. Ran a total of 112 metres from 15 runs as well as 13 hitups. He was able to get three offloads away, although he did concede two penalties. 7

Paul Gallen: Another solid performance despite coming off the bench. He ran 117 metres from 14 runs. 7.5

FIJI

Kevin Naiqama:
A quiet performance. He did put in a couple of good kicks when they were in attacking position but made two errors. 6.5

Marika Koroibete: Looked good when he had the ball, making nine runs and recording the team's lone tackle break. Struggled to contain Boyd and Jennings on the left side. 6.5

Sisa Waqa: Was out of position against a world class centre in Jennings. 6

Daryl Millard: Solid in both attack and defence, but couldn't penetrate the Aussie wall. Ran 70 metres and made 15 tackles. 7

Akuila Uate: The best in the Fijian backline, was error-free in tough conditions and made 108 metres from 13 runs. 7.5

Alipate Norilea: Put in a few good attacking kicks to get the Fijians in good field possession, including one that led to a goal line drop-out and another that almost led to a try to Koroisau.

Shaky in defence however, missing five tackles. Scored the Fijians' only points in the match – a penalty kick in the first half. 6.5

Aaron Groom: Struggled to get into any rhythm. He was the main general play kicker for the Fijians with 11 kicks finding 402 metres. 7

Ashton Sims: Solid performance by the prop, including an impressive first stint. Made strong runs and was equal second for the Fijians in terms of hitups with 11. 7.5

James Storer: Not much impact on the game at hooker. No runs but was strong in defence. 6.5

Petero Civoniceva: The best forward on field. He was very involved in each set – often going for two runs a set – making the most metres from both teams as well as the second-most tackles of the match.

An inspirational performance, as expected, from the Fijian skipper. 8

Tariq Sims: Following his captain's effort, he made the most runs for Fiji with 16 for a total of 116 metres and also led the tackle count for the Fijians with 34 to his name. 7.5

Jayson Bukuya: Worked hard in defence with 28 tackles but missed three and made two errors including a couple of knock-ons on the Australian goal line that eased pressure off Australia. 7

Korbin Sims: Tried hard, making plenty of metres and the second-most tackles for the Fijians. 7

Apisai Koroisau: Almost scored a try in the second half only to be held up millimetres from the line. Struggled to make an impact in trying conditions. 7

Eloni Vunakece: Stood out because of his hair, but was limited impact off the bench. 6.5

Kane Evans:
Tried to put his stamp on the game with a couple of big hits and strong runs, but needed more of the ball. 6.5

Vitale Roqica: Made more metres than any other player on the Fijian bench. 7

Josh Papalii crashes over for a try on Test debut against Fiji.

All the big moments from Australia's win over Fiji in the World Cup group stage.

Zero minutes: After both anthems are sung, and the Fijians bellow a harmonious prayer in song, the Australians kick off to the Bati in porous conditions.

4th minute: After a steady start by both teams, a try to Josh Morris is disallowed after Johnathan Thurston was ruled offside from a Daly Cherry-Evans kick. Penalty Fiji. From there Fiji almost fail to find touch but Hayne's attempt to keep the ball in play off his foot goes out on the full.

6th minute: Penalty to Fiji for Australia's James Tamou being too long in the ruck. Alipate Norilea slots the goal from just to the right of the posts and Fiji lead 2-0.

14th minute: The video referee takes a look at a possible try after Johnathan Thurston puts a grubber into the in-goal. Replays show Akuila Uate just put it dead before Jennings arrives. Line drop-out Fiji.

15th minute:Try to Josh Papalii for a try on debut! Thurston provides the short ball on a right side shift. Thurston converts and Australia now lead 6-2.

21st minute: Greg Inglis creates a try for Darius Boyd in the left corner. A Thurston kick is knocked down by Kevin Naiqama, but Inglis regathers, fends off three defenders and then sends it wide through Luke Lewis for Boyd to cross in the corner. Thurston misses from out wide and the Kangaroos lead 10-2.

28th minute:A grubber by Kevin Naiqama forces Greg Inglis to bat the ball dead. Line drop-out Australia.

31st minute: Michael Jennings forces his way over on a simple left side shift that included a runaround from Luke Lewis. Thurston bends it over from the sideline and Australia lead 16-2.

44th minute:Hayne regathers a kick and passes out wide to Morris who scores on the right flank. Thurston again converts a difficult kick from the sideline for Australia to kick out to a 22-2 lead.

47th minute: Thurston breaks the line but can't find a team-mate in support.

54th minute: Thurston breaks free of the line again, but this time finds Jennings whose pass to Boyd goes over the sidelines.

57th minute: A rare line break from Tamou sees him in space where he sends Cherry-Evans over for his first World Cup try. Thurston converts for a 28-2 lead.

62nd minute: Possible try to Fijian supersub Apisai Koroisau, but video referee rules no try. The ball comes loose in the tackle, is regathered and Koroisau attempts to put the ball down over the goal line but is held up.

67th minute: Cherry-Evans hits Inglis with an inside ball and the fullback finds the supporting Lewis on the right edge. Thurston converts for a 34-2 lead.

69th minute: Lewis dislocated his left shoulder after chasing a Robbie Farah kick down left side and sliding into the signage. His World Cup is now over.

79th minute: Hayne misses a regather of a Farah chip-kick but Tariq Sims passes it straight back to Morris. Play shifts to the left and Jennings tries to pass out wide to an open Boyd but again throws the ball straight over the sideline.

Full-time: Australia celebrates a comfortable 34-2 victory.

Well done Aussies, the young guys were awesome. Good work by Fiji too for not letting Aus run away with it. Hopefully there's minimal damage to Lewis' muscle/tendons and we can get him back for the final.

How good's this

Petro imo was fairly ordinary over the course of the season last year. It's much easier now to lift for 3-5 games knowing they are your last. He and Tariq Sims were Fiji's best for mine.
