You see how far he slided? There could have been 10m in goal and he still would of slided for 10m like he just did. Can't blame the short in goals for that incident imo.

Yes but as James said it looked innocuous on second look so that extra 3m could have made all the difference as far as impact, All I'm saying is that the smaller in-goals don't help and create a bigger risk of injury..
 
I think that's a good result for Fiji ... sure the conditions brought the sides closer together, but I'm pretty sure that's easily their best ever result against Australia.

Maybe they won't be too pleased now, but at the end of the tournament they should look back and be happy.

Australia were very good, the Lewis injury the only downside.

I think it's just bad luck, a combination of the ground and the conditions. It was by the dead ball line though, who's to say even if the in goal was bigger that the advertising hoardings wouldn't have been that close anyway?
 
Anyone know if Australia can still get a replacement for Lewis, or is it too far into the tournament now?

I have a feeling we might have passed the replacement stage ...

Good point, I just think a bigger in-goal may have lessened the blow that's all...Like I said that extra 3-4m could've made all the difference

In-goal areas should be 10m, All fields around the world should have the same dimensions imo..

Unfortunately it's inconsequential now I guess...Feel sorry for Luke lewis

Alot of innocuous injuries require very little impact, hence the term "innocuous". Even if the in goals were bigger that wouldn't automatically mean the signage would move back further because the grand stands are so close to the sidelines as it is.

I have already made a reply in regards to this, James raised the same point and I said it was a good one...

However I am just saying that the extra 3-4 m could've made all the difference but it doesn't matter now does it, It's happened...

I also believe every field used for Rugby League around the world should be the same dimensions, Makes sense really

Bottom Line is Lewis is injured and that's really unfortunate and I believe the small in-goal area contributed to it...

You see it differently and you may be right, Like I said it doesn't really matter now It's happened

Lewis injury sours Aust RLWC win over Fiji

A likely tournament-ending shoulder injury to back-rower Luke Lewis soured Australia's 34-2 Rugby League World Cup win over Fiji in St Helens on Saturday night.

The Kangaroos overcame atrocious conditions as they scored six tries and conceded none at Langtree Park to climb to the top of the Group A.

But the result was overshadowed by a sickening injury to Lewis, who dislocated his shoulder after sliding at speed into an advertising sign with 10 minutes to go.

The Cronulla star was assisted off the field in agony and Kangaroos coach Tim Sheens said he would likely miss the rest of the tournament.

As Sheens experimented with his squad in the second group game, Daly Cherry-Evans impressed in place of the rested Cooper Cronk at halfback, scoring a try and setting up two others, while five-eighth Johnathan Thurston was named man of the match.

Josh Papalii scored a try on debut while Michael Jennings, Darius Boyd, Josh Morris and Lewis also had four-pointers.

As with their opening win over England, Australia were guilty of some uncharacteristic errors but some sloppy play was inevitable in the conditions.

Australia had the luxury of playing their tournament opener under the Millennium Stadium roof but they were well and truly exposed to the elements in front of around 14,137 fans at Langtree Park.

The match began amid driving rain, strong winds and single-figure temperatures and the conditions acted as a leveller between the sides early on but Australia's class ultimately shone through.

Fiji had never come within 50 points of Australia in three previous meetings but they did an admirable job and captain Petero Civoniceva led the charge as one of the best forwards on the park.

Both teams took time to adjust and it was Fiji who started stronger, opening the scoring with a sixth-minute penalty through Alipate Noilea.

Australia gradually took control of the game and Morris was denied a try by the video referee before Papalii scored in the 16th minute.

The Canberra forward was played into space by a lovely Cherry-Evans ball and barged his way over the line.

Boyd combined with Lewis to extend Australia's lead with a fairly soft try in the 21st minute and Lewis was again involved 10 minutes later as he combined with fullback Greg Inglis to set up Jennings out wide.

Australia were quick to add more points after halftime, with Morris scoring in the corner after Jarryd Hayne did brilliantly to bat back a Cherry-Evans cross-field kick.

Clive Churchill medallist Cherry-Evans scored under the posts in the 57th minute on the back of a James Tamou bust before Lewis finished a well-worked move in the 67th minute.

However the Cronulla star's night ended a short time after as he collided with Jennings while chasing down a grubber and there was immediate concern from his teammates.

Yep was replying to your post while James posted what I said so didn't see his post.

Very unfortunate to Lewis and sadly this incident is unlikely to change anything regarding advertisement around the grounds. At the very least it should be padded up.
 
It's a bit difficult to increase the size of the fields there now unfortunately, you'd have to shift the whole grandstand. It's because they were initially built as soccer grounds, isn't it?

There's a lot more room at the ground England played Ireland at, so presumably it's a more modern or specialist rugby league stadium.
