hands down why not andrew john
get mat as the assistant who else knows the club better
maybe a touch of paul harrigan as well
like a coaching group
Phil loves the Knights...could be...
I actually wonder if Gould didn't have something to do with Smith going to Easts. We all know Gould is a massive fan of Smith, and still holds some clout at the Roosters ... I reckon Smith would be Gould's first choice to turn the Roosters around.
Reading this thread... you'd think Gus was a coaching God or something. TBH... I think he's being massively overrated on this forum. The games changed a lot since the last time he coached... and though he's a smart man... he consistently makes ridiculous comments when commentating. I'm not as sure as some of you are about Gus.
When I heard the news... the first two names I thought of were Stephen Kearney and Nathan Brown (as I can't see Joey taking on a FT coaching role).
Kearney did some good things with NZ and I thought Brown was doing a decent job before Bennett took over.
I'd love Gus, but that isn't going to happen.
How about Rip Taylor? I know that he isn't a known coach, but he has been great basically everywhere he has gone. He had our 06 flegg team playing as a team, and they were a lot mentally tougher than their ages would suggest. He's also someone who is very well liked among the rugby league community, yet is still pretty strict unlike Hagan. Plus he has already coached a fair amount of our current squad. I think he'd be someone who could come in and carry on with what Smith has started, instead of trying to change our entire team again.
Either way though I think Johns (Matty) should be assistant.
After round 18, the teams led by the six youngest NRL coaches occupy the positions of 16th to 10th on the ladder (the only exception was the 11th-placed Wests Tigers and their ultra-experienced coach Tim Sheens).
The average age of the coaches at the helm of the eight sides in play-off slots was 48 years 11 months, while for the bottom eight it was 43 - nearly a six-year age gap.
A Melbourne Storm assistant coach is considered one of the front-runners to take over from Brian Smith at Newcastle Knights next season - but it's not Stephen Kearney.
Little-known Michael Maguire has emerged as a potential coaching replacement at the Knights, along with Smith's current deputy Rick Stone.
While Smith's replacement is yet to be discussed given the shock nature of his decision to quit the club at the end of the season to join the Sydney Roosters, it is known both Maguire and Stone have support within the Knights hierarchy and have been spoken about in the past as head-coaching prospects.
It is understood high-profile Knights director Paul Harragon is a strong ally of Stone.
He would also have the support of the playing group as he is thought of highly within their ranks.
A former long-term Burleigh Bears coach, Stone is a local Newcastle boy who was brought to the Knights by former coach Michael Hagan and has been in the system for more than four years.
Maguire's name has been mentioned more than once over the past 12 months as an untried NRL coach with enormous potential.
