Burro talking about the release:
ABC News

Smith's contract with the Knights finishes at the end of next season but chief executive Steve Burraston has confirmed he has requested a release.

"I don't think Newcastle was ever going to be long-term for Brian," Mr Burraston told Fox Sports.

"If he had an opportunity to get a pretty substantial position somewhere else for a long period of time, it would be wrong for us to stand in his way I think.

"Brian asked us today if he could have a release so he could take up the position with the Roosters.

"From the chairman's and my point of view, we said we would be recommending to the board on Monday that that be the case, that we do grant him a release.

"In any employment outside of footy, you wouldn't stand in someone's way if they could do something that they wanted to do in their career."

Mr Burraston said the Roosters had offered Smith a four-year deal, compared to the one season remaining on his Newcastle contract.

"I would suggest without knowing that it's probably substantially more than we're capable of paying as well and he had family reasons around that as well," Burraston said.

He said the Knights had a number of ideas regarding a possible head coach for next year, including assistants at Newcastle and other clubs.

"We're not short of options, put it that way," he said.

But he played down talk club great Andrew Johns would be the man.

"I don't think Joey would like a full-time coaching career. He has stated that publicly on many occasions that he's not cut out to be a coach," Burraston said.

Mr Burraston said he was more than happy to have Smith as head coach for the remainder of the 2009 season.

"He's a very intense coach and he's a very professional coach," Mr Burraston said.

"Brian will give us everything and he gave me his word on that and said he has got a competition to win here and he firmly believes we will win the competition."

Won't quote it due to it's longevity, but yeah, there's probably nothing else that hasnt already been mentioned.

Well this sucks. Look on the bright side guys. We can remember Brian as the guy who brought us out of the ****hole and into the light, and maybe his contribution will pave the way for a new coach and a new team who will go on to be champions thanks to his foundation.

If you look at his track record, he's never had a premiership, Sure, that couldve changed with our boys, but he's renowned for his ability to produce stable clubs. He's done what he was hired for.

Best of luck to Brian Smith, and dear god, I hope the board find us a great coach.

[Anyone got a list of Coaches/Assistant coaches currently not rehired?]

If they can keep a hold of the majority of his staff, that would be beneficial and hopefully the new coach can just slip into the system. But with coaches wanting to put their systems in place I think this would be unlikely. Seeing as though the roosters got Smith with a year left on his contract, we might be able to do some sweet talking and get another coach who is still under contract.

Any assistant coach would have a release clause if they were offered a head coach position you would think. So we should get the choice of any assistant coaches. I think all the head coaches are on contract next year with the big re-shuffle of coaches last year.

Pretty dirty... though I have nothing against Smith for accepting the Roosters offer. He did what he was brought here to do... and that's build a team that can win without Joey and Bedsy.

Best of luck to him.

Well I wouldn't blame Smith. But **** the roosters. I'm just questioning the timing of the announcement. Why not end of year?

I agree with you.

He's done the hard yards for the club, everything he was meant to do, and now whoever coaches us next will be able to play off what he built.

I'm a bit surprised about the anger around here though.. not like he's left us. As someone said earlier, it's a professional business where you'd expect the players and coaches to carry on in a professional manner.

"Why not end of year?" Its rugby league there are no secrets kept quite for too long anyways, especially with the roosters.

I look at Canberra last year, neill henry finally had the team playing his way. The side was going great guns, came 6th. But he left early. Enter Furner and look at them this year.

Sign up Phil Gould.

I thought Nine had just got it wrong, and now im absolutely speechless. How can he leave Newcastle after just rebuilding the club?

We play Roosters in 2 rounds time..that will be very interesting

Very very disappointing....I was hoping BS would be long term for us, as it stands we were just a stop off...

Poor Ben Rogers must be ****ting himself.....lol
Club number 5 next mate? And he is only 24....

I hope our next coach wraps him as much as BS

well well well...anyone still love Brian Smith?

Yeah, i dont think any less of the bloke, he's always been nice when ive met him on the couple of occasions. I truly believe his heart lies at Newcastle. Im devastated that we wont sign anymore of these great under achivers though.

Smithy has developed these 'no name' players along really well and with his departure I struggle to think who can carry this on to guys like Rogers. Hope we get an experienced coach.

i am devastated, i understand why he has left, but he has been doing some great things for the club, although our club is in good shape we need to find a suitable replacement as coach so were not in the same position the broncos are in this year.

Yea, thats what im fearing, another major shake-up.

It'll be impossible for who ever we sign to slot in and work with the current squad, so no doubt they will be changes... lets just hope it aint a repeat of when Brian took over.

Why would we need a shake up?

Smith had to come in and fix what Hagan had ****ed up, not the other way around. Whoever comes in next will only reap off the benefits that Smith has left.

If we can get a coach that could do that effectively, then we could be peaking within the next few years.
