2009 NRL Player Rumours & Signings

Looks like the talks with Head & the warriors have slowed right down, and possibly dropped of the rader.

Foren or Taumata the warriors should be chasing now, unless Rangi Chase gets the sack from the dragon's if Head goes there.

Nah, Witt is a pretty good five eighth. Strong runner of the ball, good kicking game, and the benefit of his goal kicking can't be underestimated. Virtually every try becomes six points, he is easily the best in the comp.

Hazem > Witt. Only good aspect of both their games however.

In all honesty im a big fan of witt, one of my favourite players. I think hes very similar to Mullen except mullen has a slightly better kicking game.. and everyone knows what witt can do goal kicking.

hahaah i dunno if the dragons want head back.....
I really feel sorry for Brett Firman. A couple of years ago the dragons took Head over Firman and now look. Heads injury prone. If they kept firman i think he could have been one of the great prospects of the game, now hes shifted around with about 4 different teams and appears to have fallen off the radar. Poor bloke

Peter Wallace, Steve Michaels re-sign with Broncos
Ben Teo signs with the Broncos

THE Broncos have taken steps to ensure they are competitive in the post-Wayne Bennett era by signing youngsters Peter Wallace, Steve Michaels and Ben Te'o.

The club has also locked up some of the best talent in the National Youth Competition with the retention of under-20 players Gerard Beale, Josh Hoffman, Ben Hunt, Andrew McCullough, Josh McGuire, Will Tupou and Jharal Yow Yeh.

Wallace's three-year contract extension will tie him to the Broncos until the end of the 2012 season.

Michaels has re-signed for two years and Wests Tigers player Te'o, who went to school at Keebra Park High, will return to Queensland on a one-year deal.

Broncos chief executive Bruno Cullen said: "Peter Wallace has done everything right since he moved up here this season (from Penrith) and we obviously see him as a player who has an important future at this club.

"Although Steve Michaels has suffered a serious injury this year, his new deal is a sign of the faith we have in his career continuing on an upward path.

"And with Tonie Carroll moving on into retirement at the end of this year, Ben Te'o is going to fill an important role as a wide-running forward for us.

All seven of the Toyota Cup players, including NRL debutants Hoffman and McCullough, have been re-signed for a further two years.

And he will probably miss the world cup

Well by the criteria that Carr and Stuart have made up, he will!

Which on top of Crocker and Buderus not being there, is more disappointment for people spending all their money to fly over and go to the games (not referring to anyone in particular haha).

I dont think it was the ARL's fault, Stade Francses or however you spell it wnated him there for presaeson training at some riduclous time, although it wouldn't have mattered the selectorsd wouldnt have chosen him anyway. The team is simpler to choose now. Hodges and Inglis at centres and folau and another random like tate on the wing

Trent Hodgkinson > Manly (Confirmed)

Another Eel slips away

Top Parramatta junior Trent Hodgkinson has signed with the Sea Eagles.

FOR the second time in two months Manly have poached an outstanding Parramatta junior who is being tipped to succeed Sea Eagles captain Matt Orford.

The Manly Daily can reveal rookie Eels half Trent Hodkinson has agreed to terms with the Sea Eagles for the next two seasons.

The signing has left Eels officials privately seething after massive winger Tony Williams agreed to join Manly in May.

Hodkinson is currently out injured following knee reconstruction surgery at the start of the year.

He was being groomed by the Eels to play in the NRL next season.

But now it appears the 19-year-old will do that at Manly.

"I reckon he will progress and be Manly's next long-term halfback after Orford," Hodkinson's manager David Riolo told the Daily yesterday.

"He's outstanding and is a great signing."

Parramatta boss Denis Fitzgerald appeared unconcerned when contacted about the latest Eel to join Manly.

Now this is interesting, courtesy of rugby heaven:

SOUTH SYDNEY chief executive Shane Richardson last night revealed the club had approached the management of French rugby star Sebastien Chabal to inquire about the possibility of the "Caveman" playing a portion of this season with the club.

News of the approach provides an intriguing twist to the growing story of NRL players switching to French rugby, with St George Illawarra star Mark Gasnier to be confirmed today as an enormous catch for the Stade Francais club.

"We looked at Chabal at the start of the year," Richardson said. "You've got to look outside the square sometimes, if you want to be successful, and we believe that if Chabal wanted to play some league he would be a success.

"He's got pace, he's strong, and he really rips in with his defence. You've got to look harder to find a union forward that could switch to league and be successful than you would to find a back, but Chabal would have great potential. We weren't able to work anything out with him, but it was worth a try."

Not surprisingly, considering the approach to Chabal, who plays for English club Sale Sharks and the French national side, Richardson said there was merit in Dragons chief executive Peter Doust's suggestion that NRL players should be allowed to play union in Europe if it meant them staying in the NRL as well.

"That sort of discussion is good for the game," Richardson said. "I don't think the physical toll on outside-backs would be too bad. Give players the chance to earn more money like that, if it will help keep them in our game.

"It might lead to us getting something back the other way. If you were able to bring out a European rugby star for four or five months for a guest stint with a league club it could really add some colour and excitement to the strong product that we already have."

Former Eels halfback Peter Sterling, who played a league off-season with English club Hull FC in 1985, said the fact Doust was thinking outside the square should be applauded.

"I'm deeply concerned about how many players we have lost [overseas]," Sterling said. "And I don't think it cuts it to say someone else is there to take their spot. I'd much rather have Mark Gasnier here in some shape or form than have him gone completely.

"The big problem is it's going to have a huge toll on the players' bodies, if they did it for more than a couple of years. Still, I'd much rather be exploring things like that than saying, when Mark Gasnier's gone, 'Well, someone will take his spot'."

Experienced Bulldogs, NSW and Australian team doctor Hugh Hazard said it was possible league stars could get away with playing half a year of rugby on top of that without running themselves into the ground.

"[But] it would depend on how big the training load was in union and how often they played," he said. "If you're talking about forwards doubling up, it would obviously be much more difficult, but for wingers, centres and fullbacks it is something they could possibly handle."

1. Slater
2. Hayne
3. Inglis
4. Hodges
5. Folau

Now that's a back line.

That is a great back line, though I think I'd prefer:

1. Gidley
2. Inglis/Hayne
3. Cooper/Inglis
4. Hodges
5. Folau

So basically Gidley at fullback and maybe Cooper over Hayne, though that's a big maybe.

I'd have Cooper over Hayne. I'd also have Gidley over Slater but I'm pretty sure that's just bias.

Slaters the incumbant though, so unless hes injured then its a no go for gids. i'd expect him on the bench though

has anyone posted this yet?

Kaufusi > eels
menzies > bradford bulls
skandalis > tigers
setu > broncos

costigan wants out of the raiders but a clause said premier league counts in the 10 mandatory games.

Are you sure about Costigan?!?!

I've heard that Canberra don't want him, but since he will reach the 12 game mark for premier league and first grade, they will be forced to keep him. Costigan wants to stay, and will, but Canberra were happy to let him go (for some bizzare reason).
