I hope I'm not premature on this—good topic of conversation to hear everyone's thoughts. I can see options getting changed, moved around over the course of the next few months. Let me know if I've missed anyone you want added to the list. I've edited the vote, you can pick two candidates. Maybe one might be an assistant.

Tough choice, but I've gone with Brad Arthur if the deal with the Bears is not done. Had a good tenure with the Eels, went up against a red-hot Penrith side in the GF. Got sacked when Moses and a bunch of other players were injured. It's clear to see how much of a different side Parra are without Moses playing.

I would consider Hollbrooke, bit harsh by the Titans. He is the attack coach for the Roosters now, and they are playing well. Also a Newcastle boy, I think. Ex player.

I think Kevy falls into this basket also, pretty ruthless from the Broncos to drop him. He took them from second last, I think, to the GF in two years. But then they fell just as hard! :lol:

I also like John Morris, he did well for the Sharks side when he took over. Young coach with plenty of experience and an ex-Knight player.

Anyway hard to pick one, but I think all the guys are good contenders for the job.

First pick would be Brad Arthur but he sounds all but done as the inaugural Perth Bears coach.

John Morris is my next pick. Has ties to the club and was underrated at the Sharks.

Not convinced McDermott could do any better as a coach already at the club. We need to gut the problem and start again, as sh*t as it is.
 
McDermott may have zero say in how the team is run, implementing OB's plan.

Maybe OB is a complete control freak and it's his way always.

Anyway, I have no idea on preferred coach anymore, not OB, and just make the right choice Knights.
 
I’d like McDermott, great wrap sheet, he was a tough player and he might be able to bring that to the side, won’t hurt to give him the reigns in a caretaker position to see, he is a assistant and anyone one who knows anything knows the head coach has the final say and delegates his wishes accordingly.

I wouldn’t touch Arthur myself just my opinion don’t think he is that great certainly won’t win a title.

Josh Morris might be a solid shout, underrated looks like he has a bit of “I don’t care who you are” which is good at managing egos.

If Perth don’t snatch Sammy I’d like to give him a crack.

A fair bit of people out there which scares me because that means the board can screw up easily and pick the wrong one.

Who ever they pick they need to be sure he can unlock KP and our attack, if he can’t than move on
 
If we are talking AOB, gone then McDermott is obvious ,choice, wouldn’t change other support coaches as they may not have had the freedom of implementing there ideas, McDermott he should make those choices and can give a overall report at season end that if he has the job 2026 he will decide who his assistants are

This is a huge stretch. Most of us are very keen to see the back of AOB, but the idea that he’d refuse to take on his assistant coaches ideas when we’re struggling is pretty ridiculous. Gags said on Friday they work with Blake Green on the attack. The assistants aren’t blameless in all of this by any means.

On the question I’d like John Morris or Holbrook. Brad Arthur I can’t see coming due to his relationship with AOB.

That’s even if he’s sacked. Might not even happen.

If the report from Junior Rep is true, then a board meeting on Monday would mean only one thing.

Mal comes across as a bit of a moron to me unfortunately. Some of his selections for the Aus team in recent years have been head scratchers. Also while he’s well respected by previous generations I’m not sure most of the current squad would know enough about him for his reputation alone to gather buy in without the technical knowledge to back it up. Very different coaching rep teams to club sides.

Mal would be in the Wayne Bennett mold. More of a man manager rather than tactical, I think. He would rely on his assistants to do the technical stuff, and support those coaches and the players.
 
Many will disagree but I don't think AOB is the problem. No coach, including 1 of the most successful coaches of all time in Bennett, has been able achieve sustained success at this club without joey. The knights have tried recruiting good players over the years but something about the club just stinks and I can't put my finger on what it is.

If the club decides to go in a different direction I think there's 3 obvious choices if they want previous NRL experience in Brad Arthur, John Morris or Justin Holbrook. Willie Peters is another option. Has previous assistant coach experience at the knights and achieved good success at HKR in his 1st opportunity as a head coach. However he is only in the 1st year of a 4 year extension after signing until the end of 2028.
 
We really need a coach that will attract players gone are the days where Newcastle clubs could produce a endless supply of talent you look at current squad there’s a sprinkle of players from hunter valley and central coast we desperately need a half and some front rowers the later this coaching saga is not resolved the more players we miss out on we apparently got the best in the business in building squads (pos) make some tough decisions get rid of some players for me ponga gagai Hastings Elliott frizell gamble there a start to free up some money
 
Just on McDermott, I’m not sure if taking over as caretaker now would really be in his best interests if he wants to be considered for the FG job.

He’s got the same side that’s completely down on confidence, a million injuries, he’s going to have to keep the same attack coach in Green likely as he won’t be able to bring in his own staff for a temp role. I don’t really see us improving at all to be honest.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s not actually named as caretaker because he asks not to be as he doesn’t want his shot at the job (or a job elsewhere in the NRL) to be impacted by what’s inevitably going to happen in the next few months.
