Hollbrooke won 1 ESL title. McDermott won 4, all with Leeds. He also won 2 World Cup challengers. He will be the replacement. His resume speaks for itself. Weather he is the long term option we will see. Arguably one of the best Knights coach’s was Malcome Reilly.
 
Honestly don't get the John Morris love thinking he is going to come in and be able to turn this club around.

The bloke coached Cronulla for 2 seasons finished 7th and straight out, 8th and straight out. Then fired.

For mine it's just romanticism that he can come here and make us a success.

With the lineup QLD had over those years, I could have coached them to the same results remotely from Birdsville.
I’ve never understood why people get chubbed up over his “coaching genius”.
 
For me, Wallace is the clear standout. He was part of the coaching staff for all 4 of the Panthers premierships. He played under Bennett. He wasn’t the most naturally gifted halfback, but he knew how to control the game and steer his side. We go into next season with no proper halfback. So I think him being a former 7 would help.

As always, context.

He inherited a side with a lot of washed players and managed a transition - essentially a very quick rebuild - where they overhauled the roster and brought through NSW Cup/pathways talent. Obviously good development is also a sign of a strong club not just a good coach per se, but it’s pretty impressive nonetheless I think that results didn’t slip too badly.

I would argue he also put a lot of building blocks in place for how that team attacks now, and I think you have to give credit for results given a) Shaun Johnson was injured a lot, that’s very limited availability for their marquee player at that time and b) He had to rely on guys like old Aaron Woods to play big minutes as part of the transition.

The argument against him is the Sharks had him, concluded he couldn’t take them further, then signed Fitz, from whom they got a lot of improvement. IIRC it was a massive surprise he got sacked because there was a wide perception he was doing a good job, and also they missed finals so the fans were not happy at the time - but also, the people running the club worked with him every day, and decided he didn’t cut it. Maybe they know something the general public don’t? Cronulla are pretty inarguably a well run club at this point, they’ve finished 6th or higher in 7 of the last 10 seasons. So they probably knew what they were doing…

The only way I see this going is for Obi to be sacked immediately, McDermott to be caretaker for remainder of season and a new Coach to be found for 2026 onwards. That Coach could be McDermott or any other.
Arthur, if appointed, would not be taking Obi’s job as the position would have been vacant for quite some time before being filled.
If Obi isn’t sacked immediately then the Knights Board have wasted a very good opportunity and Obi is likely to complete his current contract

All of the most successful coaches in the past 20 years have played at least first-grade level. Cleary, Bellamy, Bennett, Robinson. AOB was a park footballer much like Anthony Griffin and Garth Brennan. One could argue that Andrew Webster was a park footballer as well, but at least he played in the lower grades for a NRL club.

I’d love a coach that could coach them to play to the modern game, but also not allow them to be pussies. A few hard words and they’re crying and wanting out of the contract… a good old school coach squashes that and gets them where they need to be as a player

I agree, but who? If the Knights players can't cop AOB protecting them from criticism, imagine if we had Madge? It's the age old 'it's easier to sack the coach than the players'. I said the other day, I reckon POS is here to slash and burn. Rebuild 2.0 incoming.
