What made you support the Knights

Game on broheim
Just watching an old game where Darren Albert scored 4 tries and we thumped the Tigers and it made me think was there a specific moment or player that made you support the club?

For me it was kind of a birthright. Born and raised in Lake Macquarie. My mum actually grew up on Ross Street Belmont which was the same street Chief was brought up on.

So I never really had a choice. If I didn’t support the club I’d of been disowned.

What’s your story?

Not really sure why I started following the knights in the early 2000s as a kid besides watching Joey dismantle teams and everyone whinging it’s a “one man team” and I just sat back happily.

My dad is a faithful dragons supporter, with my brother barracking for the sharks due to us living so close.

I guess it only got reinforced when in years 4 - 6 (2004 - 2006) my dad would pull me out of school early on a Friday arvo and drive us 2 and a half hours to Newcastle just to watch all grades play! He always brought meat pies and a large thermos of whatever drink I asked for.

1997. Was 8 and living in Cronulla at the time. Family all went for the sharks except for my uncle who was a Knights supporter. Watched the sharks in the super league and went for the Knights in the ARL. Was fascinated with the Johns boys and the rest is history

I was 13 and living at Kotara when they entered the comp. Dad didn't think going to the first game was a great idea given the crowd that was anticipated. That was against Parra with Sterling, Kenny and Grothe amongst others. I don't remember much about that game other then the highlights I've seen since. Next week we played Wests away and had a narrow victory. I was listening on the radio as we did some work in the back yard. After that excitement I insisted we go the next week, playing eventual grand finalists Balmain. I have some images of that game, of Siro looking huge charging our line, of Elias scheming and of us toeing a loose ball ahead to score. We managed a win there too.

Became a Knights supporter back in 2020 through my old job via a work tipping comp where 16 of us were given a team and was the 2nd last person to pick a side.

I could pick either Knights or Titans and picked the Knights because of KP and Joey Johns. Also the Titans won the spoon the previous year and wasn't familiar with anyone in that team at the time as I was still a newcomer to watching the NRL then.

Had a year’s academic exchange at UTS in the mid 90s. Rugby league back home was mainly fat blokes running into one another but watching the games in Australia was much more enjoyable, particularly when the two Johns brothers were on. Hasn’t always been easy to keep up with the games with lack of TV coverage, etc but thankfully I have my watchNRL subscription and this place now to satiate my Knights needs.

In my early teens I dragged Dad to basketball games. He got over that fast, so he sat me down one origin period and I fell in love with the chief and his hard hitting heroics.

I still remember asking what team he played for. Dad said Newcastle, so I asked what animal they were. Well, Knights is my last name, so I was sold.

I was lucky enough that my dad switched from parra to the Knights when they came in. I say lucky because I feel like I was in the minority growing up here in newy. So many of my mates dad's continued supporting there teams, and so my mates followed there dad's. Im stoked I now get to support my local team, instead of supporting a team that I can't watch regularly like so many of my friends.
But I really started supporting them when I got older and moved away for work. Watching the Knights was my way of connecting back home. Typical story I guess, you dont know how good you have it, until you dont have it. I feel that was about both newcastle the city and the Knights now. They are both part of me.... Great city, unreal football team...
