Vlandysball & roster construction

This is going to sound like making excuses for poor player performance, but the stupid Vlandys six again rule has totally upended player value, changing what traits are most important in forwards particularly, and we’re one of the teams being affected the worst.

When we signed David Klemmer, he was one of the best props in the NRL. He had every trait you wanted - he’s a big monster who can come off the back fence with 15-20 strong charges a game, carry four guys with him for sometimes 10+ post contact metres, and defenders trying to push the line speed to prevent him from getting that momentum had the threat of an offside penalty hanging over their heads to prevent them from rushing up on him too much. Defensively he wasn’t known as a hitman, but he’s as safe as it comes, pretty much never misses a tackle or makes a defensive error, etc.

On a whim, Peter Vlandys decides that ruck infringements and 10 metre encroachments shouldn’t result in downfield kicks anymore, just a six again which, I’m sorry, is no penalty for the defensive team at all. Now all of a sudden the big ogre who hits it up strong, those middle workhorses who can play huge minutes, they’re not the best forwards anymore. The best prop in the NRL is now James Fisher-Harris - 6’2”, 103kg, a guy whose best traits are his line speed & effective first contact in defence. These were always important traits, and he’s a good yardage player, but the fact is until the end of 2019 he had more NRL games in the back row than the front. Penrith has an army of forwards of about this size (their only forward who weighs more than 110kg is Kikau, who has a specific role as an attacking weapon & doesn’t play huge minutes for a back rower) who can get up off the line quickly and swarm the ball carrier in defence. Leota, Leniu etc were always going to be good players but now they’re kind of exactly what you want and the fact they’re not amazing yardage guys isn’t a big deal anymore - having a bit of footwork and ball skills around the ruck is actually better than being able to rev up for a big charge at the moment. Yeo their lock forward used to play on an edge, but he’s light enough on his feet to play centre so now he’s an elite 13.

Meanwhile the big momentum prop is being met approximately 0.2 second after catching the ball by *definitely onside* players (another problem with the six again rules is that they’re barely ever even awarded a lot of the time) and being driven back in a way which just did not happen previously.

Yes, our guys should get off the line quicker and hit harder. I’m not arguing against that. But I am saying that when you’re 6’6” and 120kg, doing that is more difficult. There is no chance at all, zero, zip, nada, that a team playing in the NRL under these rules would spend $800K+ on a player like David Klemmer. We are being punished for our failure to predict rule changes no one knew were coming and recruit accordingly. It’s horribly unfair, we’re not the only team affected, yet barely anyone talks about this.

Agree with your post, the 6 again rule has destroyed the game and also the removal of scrums.

It is no longer the game I used to play and grew up watching, it is a glorified game of touch footy. The big man is going to be one redundant.

They need to go back to the old rules asap as I hardly enjoy watching any games and I am not the one that feels like this. They have tried to make the game faster but in reality have actually destroyed it.

We really should think about turning Brad Best back into a forward.
He hasn't played second row since he was 14 and playing under 16s a year young, but an explosive and powerful forward who can make a break and go on with it is suddenly a valuable asset.
Brodie Jones needs to get more minutes too.
The big guys are still useful - but you need some very mobile smaller forwards like Jones, Best, Watson and even a ball playing forward like Jack Johns is someone we should look at using more.

Klemmer shouldn’t start, but I get the impression that he won’t take kindly to being asked to come off the bench...

Have to totally disagree with this ... watch games from the 90s and they were a lot faster than what developed with wresting and three/four man tackles in the 2000s and 2010s. Even the 80s sides would all run to the scrums and play the balls were a million times faster. I love the rule changes, I think they've brought little men back into the game and given endurance a place in the game again.

We had an off-season to prepare for it and don't seem to have adjusted as well as other sides.

Watching the storm, manly, Sharks etc wrestle each other in to dust during the mid-2010s wasn't exactly entertaining.

I agree sides need more Watson's and less saifitis but our problems are much deeper than rule changes, we shouldn't be anywhere near this bad with the squad we have.

The games from the 90s had interchanges where you came off and you were done, they also didn't have this ridiculous 6 again rule, they had normal penalties and scrums.

I am all for the little man coming back into it but they went overboard with the stupid 6 again.

Also my comment has nothing to do with our squad, it was my opinion about the current state of the entire comp.

Yeah let's take our only decent center and make them a back..
If things keep going as they are, there won't be much difference between centre and second row.
The sides that are playing well now all have second rowers who are hard to tell from backline players. If Kikau goes any wider he'll be playing wing soon.

Definitely don’t think it’s out of the question that Bradman will end up as a forward. Simi Sasagi a guy with the body type you can imagine flourishing as a Cam Murray style 13. But yeah overall many years ago we swapped Tapine for Barnett, and we didn’t go hard at Pangai and therefore had the cap space to get Klemmer. Pangai & Tapine are prototypical Vlandoball forwards, Barnett & Klemmer very much not. If we knew what was coming years later, maybe we make different recruitment and retention decisions.

Not sure what your point is, but the 90s had six interchanges 1991-95, and unlimited interchanges from 1996 onwards.

My mistake, I was thinking when the interchange was 4 for the entire game....must have been the 80s? That naturally brought in the little man and didn't need to manufacture fatigue like the 6 again rule.

I don't like the 6 again rule as it has ruined the game imo.

Yep the old traditional replacements were prior to 91. 👍🏼 Don’t think they could do that these days with all the concussions and injuries though.

With one referee so less policing of the ruck, and the penalty only being a six again rather than a downfield kick, teams obviously wrestle more in the ruck and hold down longer, particularly when they have a team trapped in the red zone. The rules incentivise it. The trapped team is more risk adverse because if they turn it over it’s in great field position, so there’s more one out running than there ever has been before. More tries from forwards doing crash plays near the line. Less offloading because teams get hands on the ball in the tackle because they’re less worried about giving away ruck infringements. The best team in the comp is the best team because they’re the best at exploiting the Vlandys rules.

Now when fatigue sets in and teams get some six agains in attacking sets, *then* you see the “flow” people are talking about, to an extent - lot of it is just exhausted dudes falling over or reeling out of contact, and then some momentum is built up and the six again will be called for borderline professional foul-level holding down. But ****ing hell if you can watch the way the best teams in particular trap a team down an end, stand offside and rush up, twist & hold in tackles, and allow ten seconds to elapse between first contact the next play the ball, and say “ahhhh, finally the wrestle is gone”... I mean you’re just ignoring the evidence in front of you.

The six again is just to trigger happy I believe. There has to be clear attempt for the defensive player to slow the ball down and the player playing the ball had to actually get to his feet and make the attempt.

I wonder how much the structures that Siebold has introduced to our squad have affected us.
The sides influenced by his methods don't seem to be thriving.
The bits and pieces I've seen seem like he has all these very structured plays, and the teams that are going well have some simple plays and structures and just make it up as they go along when they find themselves in space.
