Hope so mate, if they’re committed to Fletcher in the halves he has to get those reps on the ball, whatever type of half they want him to be. But I’m very trepidatious.I hope he us under utilised if anything today. I don't mind him loitering around the ruck and having a run directly off a quick ptb, otherwise he needs to trust his halves to find him out wider. He won't always get the ball when he thinks he should because we have a lot of running threats, but he needs to be patient and concentrate on support.
I'm trusting the new coach to get Ponga's balance right. I'm not sure the old coach's comms to Ponga last year were clear enough.Hope so mate, if they’re committed to Fletcher in the halves he has to get those reps on the ball, whatever type of half they want him to be. But I’m very trepidatious.
Always wondered if AOB only ever working with guys like Cam Smith & Cooper Cronk affected his perspective. So used to great players just figuring it out & implementing very detailed game plans. Kalyn is a great player so surely he can do the same?I'm trusting the new coach to get Ponga's balance right. I'm not sure the old coach's comms to Ponga last year were clear enough.![]()

There are different kinds of great players though.
Today might be the first stages of a NRL ref world domination plot!!!It goes all the way to the top, it's an international conspiracy now!
Two out of three ain't badDefensive steel.
Limited mistakes.
Patience on the forum for a team in progress.
You have to listen to Connor Watson talk about KP to know he actually doesn't have much brain power. Freaky player when he could goosey his way through a defensive line. It'll be interesting if he actually just goes back to a supporting fullback role which he would exceed in doing. Rather then being a hybrid half.Always wondered if AOB only ever working with guys like Cam Smith & Cooper Cronk affected his perspective. I got everything I wanted that’s crazy. In all seriousness though:
- Kind of think given the roster we need to go away from structure and emphasise principles more. Focus more on moving the ball quickly and bringing players onto the ball with time and space rather than precision in running patterns. In fact I think we should look to run fewer decoy lines but make sure it’s the guys who are the best at it and they’re running with conviction. Worry more about the finer points once the basics are looking better.
-We probably leave 6-12 points out there every game due to a lack of pushing up in support, a lack of competing in 50/50 situations, etc. Stop going through the motions and start going to the game.
- Should be looking to offload a lot. Dylan Lucas, Bradman Best, Trey Mooney, Dylan Brown, Cody Hopwood and Tyson Frizell are all varying levels of good at it. Other teams don’t want to have to deal with it. Brown and Sharpe are two of the most dynamic players in the comp off the back of an offload.
- Melbourne Storm, no matter who’s in the halves, end like 60% of their good ball sets by chip bombing to a tall winger. Maybe we should consider ever doing that with the one we have who’s as tall as Michael Jordan.
- Will obviously be looking very hard at how Dylan and Fletch combine in the halves. I worry about Dylan putting the running game away with everything else that will be on his plate, and I hope Fletcher has improved a lot in how he brings men onto the ball.
It’s one game but it felt like he did. Felt like Kalyn sweeping around the outside was the general rule but he was putting Dylan one pass wider as a variation. When AOB tried it seemed to me like Kalyn on the ball way too much. Dylan Brown had 70 touches which was highest in the team after Phoenix & is about what you’d expect from Nathan Cleary. Sandon on track for 65 if he played the full 80. Kalyn 50.I'm trusting the new coach to get Ponga's balance right. I'm not sure the old coach's comms to Ponga last year were clear enough.![]()
Yeah, i was happy with the shapes. Kalyn obviously came closer to the ruck for his kicking game but I'm ok with that. Particularly being a left footer. Happy that Brown ran the ball alot. The trick to that is finding new looks and new ways to keep him involved. He’s come out of the blocks a few years and been found out by round 5. Not saying we won’t do that but just an observation from the pastTeddy credits Holbrook with the massive uptick in his form over the last couple of years and I think we got a glimpse at why. A few years back he was sort of having a similar struggle there where obviously he’s the Chooks’ best player but they weren’t finding the right balance in his involvements. I was watching them closely when it was rumoured we were going to get Sandon and they were doing a similar thing with Teddy over there where they were looking to get him challenging those wide players as much as possible but also involving him through the middle third where previously they’d use Radley. I maintain Sandon was the main one actually steering them around till Walker came back but there was a lot of clever variation in their shapes where Sandon, Teddy and Hugo would all be connecting in varying ways. Really different to how they played through the early 2020’s.
Yeah true. But very promising signs. In all the time AOB was head coach when did Kalyn get an opportunity like the Sandon Smith inside ball off the back of an offload? Such a basic “look” you see fullbacks like Teddy get all the time but it’s like AOB had choked it out of us.The trick to that is finding new looks and new ways to keep him involved. I’ve called for the inside ball for years. When we’ve had speed like Ponga and Sharp it’s a no brainer. AOB missed plenty of tricksYeah true. But very promising signs. This was achieved. Really smart tactics made good use of our limited forward pack. Nice to see a lot of thought go into that weak area.A weak looking forward pack to step up, compete for the full match and keep us in it for 80 minutes.
